2020-04-15%20-%20009%20-%20Fallout%2076%20-%20Wastelanders%20-%20Sin-Eater%20-%201-3%0A%0AThe%20roof%20deck%20on%20the%20top%20of%20my%20two%20story%20was%20sunny%20and%20I%20was%20glad%20I%20paid%20extra%20to%20have%20what%20I%20needed%20hauled%20up%20the%20mountain%20for%20the%20view%20of%20Watoga.%20%20%20Behind%20the%20building%20is%20a%20small%20pond%20and%20water%20purifier%2C%20in%20font%20some%20veggies%2C%20and%20all%20around%20were%20turrets%2C%20not%20much%20more%20can%20be%20asked%20for.%20%20Well%2C%20an%20autoloader%20would%20have%20been%20nice.%20%20I%20reached%20for%20a%20deliciously%20thick%20drum%20magazine%20that%20was%20laying%20on%20the%20table%20and%20I%20got%20a%20sharp%20slap%20from%20Rico%20holding%20a%20stick%20magazine.%0A%0A%u201CDrums%20are%20too%20unreliable.%20%20Sticks%20are%20easier%20to%20carry%2C%20better%20balanced%2C%20and%20cheaper%20to%20replace.%u201D%20Rico%20uncharacteristically%20growled.%20%20I%20rubbed%20the%20back%20of%20my%20hand%20making%20sure%20skin%20wasn%27t%20missing.%20%20I%20started%20to%20open%20my%20mouth%20but%20he%20cut%20me%20off.%20%20%u201CDrums%20are%20for%20fun%21%20%20Sticks%20are%20for%20taking%20out%20pricks%21%20%20Didn%27t%20the%20film%20strips%20teach%20you%20things%20Ressi%3F%u201D%0A%0AMy%20name%20was%20not%20Ressi%2C%20but%20that%27s%20what%20outsiders%20called%20us%20Vault%20Residents%20who%20lived%20and%20died%20in%20the%20network%20of%20prefab%20underground%20containers%20meant%20to%20weather%20The%20Great%20War.%20%20The%20vault%20eventually%20opened%20-%20perhaps%20the%20only%20vault%20to%20ever%20open%20-%20and%20we%20discovered%20an%20area%20empty%20of%20human%20life%2C%20but%20not%20of%20life.%0A%0AIf%20neutron%20bombs%20had%20been%20used%20then%20their%20discriminatory%20effects%20on%20animal%20life%20was%20not%20effective%20and%20in%20fact%20the%20enhanced%20radiation%20weapons%20mutated%20them%20and%20made%20a%20plague%20even%20worse%20as%20it%20rolled%20across%20Appalachia.%20%20At%20least%20that%27s%20what%20we%20first%20thought.%20%20For%20a%20year%20we%20Residents%20worked%20together%20and%20sometimes%20fought%20against%20each%20other%20to%20contain%20it%20and%20now%20we%20have%20wastelanders%20coming%20into%20the%20region.%20%20Their%20presence%20are%20a%20welcomed%20necessity%20for%20rebuilding%2C%20their%20lack%20of%20vaccination%20threatens%20everything%20that%20we%20have%20built.%20%20That%20problem%20is%20being%20worked%20on%20but%20for%20now%20surviving%20is%20priority%20and%20that%20means%20caps.%0A%0A%u201CGotta%20say%20those%20.22%20drums%20the%20police%20had%20when%20I%20was%20a%20kid%20were%20the%20bee%27s%20knees.%20%20Sounded%20like%20a%20whole%20swarm%20of%20them%20too.%u201D%20He%20nostalgically%20stroked%20his%20chin.%0A%0A%u201CThis%20is%20boring%20man.%u201D%20I%20slapped%20down%20another%20loaded%20magazine.%20%20%u201CWhy%20reload%20all%20these%20cartridges%20by%20hand%20when%20you%20can%20do%20this%20with%20power%20armor%3F%u201D%20%20Waldos%20were%20not%20gloves%20but%20large%20robot%20hands%20in%20the%20shape%20of%20a%20human%27s%20and%20the%20power%20armor%20pilot%20operated%20them%20from%20controls%20just%20behind%20the%20wrist%20servos.%20%20They%20can%20also%20be%20instructed%20to%20repeat%20actions%20such%20as%20reloading%20magazines.%0A%0A%u201CThe%20PA%20waldos%20are%20great%20tools.%u201D%20he%20gestured%20with%20a%20wave%20of%20his%20hand%20at%20the%20hulking%20humanoid%20armor%20being%20held%20up%20by%20a%20maintenance%20hoist%20behind%20him.%20%20%u201CTools%20get%20used%20more%20they%20need%20maintenance%20and%20calibration.%20%20You%27re%20willing%20to%20spend%20time%20and%20caps%20for%20a%20one%20hundred%20hour%20overhaul%20every%20ten%20hours%3F%20%20Find%20me%20an%20extra%20frame%20with%20two%20thousand%20caps%20and%20I%27ll%20build%20one%20for%20you.%u201D%0A%0ARico%20served%20in%20The%20Great%20War%20but%20he%20was%20never%20clear%20about%20the%20particulars.%20%20My%20guess%20by%20some%20of%20his%20mannerism%20was%20that%20he%20at%20least%20passed%20through%20Little%20America%20but%20I%27m%20not%20a%20linguist.%20%20Sometimes%20a%20traveling%20merchant%20and%20at%20other%20times%20a%20job%20fixer%20at%20The%20Wayward%20bar%2C%20Rico%27s%20knowledge%20of%20bits%20and%20pieces%20of%20information%20that%20the%20Vault%27s%20training%20program%20missed%20or%20glossed%20over%20helped%20me%20many%20times%20so%20respecting%20his%20privacy%20and%20advice%20comes%20with%20the%20jobs.%20%20I%20guess%20he%20tolerates%20me%20because%20I%20need%20caps.%20%20Also%20I%20tolerate%20him%20and%20I%20have%20power%20armors%2C%20hence%20the%20thirstiness%20for%20caps.%20%20Still%2C%20my%20camp%27s%20roof%20deck%20is%20a%20long%20way%20across%20the%20Savage%20Divide%20from%20The%20Wayward%20where%20he%20and%20others%20of%20his%20entrepreneurial%20kind%20often%20meet%20up.%0A%0A%u201CWhy%20are%20you%20so%20hard%20up%20chasing%20after%20this%20Kerr-mays%20guy%3F%u201D%20I%20absentmindedly%20asked%20whil %20handed%20me%20one%2C%20clinking%20it%20with%20his%20to%20toast%20or%20maybe%20to%20knock%20demons%20out%20from%20it.%20%20%u201CCancer%20probing%20at%20the%20Crimson%20Prospect%20early%20morning.%20%20Wear%20PPE.%20%20Salud%21%u201D%0A%0A*%20%20%20*%20%20%20*%0A%0A2020-04-15%20-%20014%20-%20Fallout%2076%20-%20Wastelanders%20-%20Sin-Eater%20-%202-3%0A%0AI%20was%20by%20myself%20in%20the%20wetter%20than%20expected%20bog%2C%20the%20light%20rain%20faded%20as%20foggy%20blue%20hour%20gradually%20became%20dark%20indigo.%20%20Good%20weather%20of%20sunny%20golden%20fields%20of%20the%20past%20few%20days%20turned%20grey%20and%20dreary%20quickly.%20%20Rico%20said%20that%20watch%20standers%20being%20bored%20and%20miserable%20works%20to%20our%20advantage.%20%20I%20don%27t%20doubt%20it%2C%20too%20bad%20I%27m%20bored%20and%20miserable%20too%20although%20at%20least%20I%27m%20warm%20and%20dry%20in%20my%20suit.%20%20The%20radio%20was%20pointless%20because%20of%20jamming%20from%20the%20Crimson%20Prospect%20but%20basically%20the%20idea%20is%20for%20me%20to%20stealthily%20soften%20them%20as%20much%20as%20possible%2C%20then%20create%20enough%20ruckus%20with%20grenades%20thrown%20into%20the%20fuel%20and%20ammo%20storage%20so%20that%20Rico%20can%20use%20his%20anti-material%20rifle%20to%20support%20me%20without%20giving%20away%20his%20position.%20%20I%27m%20the%20only%20one%20in%20full%20plate%20power%20armor%20after%20all.%20%20I%20let%20in%20some%20foggy%20air%20into%20the%20suit.%20%20It%20didn%27t%20smell%20like%20cranberries.%0A%0ACrouching%20behind%20the%20Ranger%20District%20Office%20sign%20northeast%20of%20the%20Crimson%20Prospect%20I%20looked%20behind%20me%20in%20the%20distance%20and%20noticed%20some%20Scorched%2C%20red%20zombies%20with%20green%20crystals%20growing%20out%20from%20them%20in%20places%20walking%20around%20while%20the%20rest%20were%20sleeping.%20%20That%27s%20good%2C%20it%20means%20that%20the%20bored%20watches%20at%20the%20Crimson%20Prospect%20couldn%27t%20see%20or%20hit%20this%20far%20out%20even%20during%20daytime.%0A%0AThe%20Crimson%20Prospect%20tree%20house%20junk%20fortification%20build%20was%20even%20more%20impressive%20up%20close%20with%20salvaged%20buses%20and%20cargo%20containers%20at%20the%20base.%20%20Canvas%20tarps%20were%20thrown%20over%20leaky%20roofs%20and%20served%20as%20sunshades%2C%20and%20wooden%20catwalks%20circled%20the%20shacks%20that%20were%20built%20into%20and%20on%20top%20the%20electrical%20transmission%20tower%20frame.%20%20The%20perimeter%20had%20tire%20walls%2C%20containers%2C%20and%20guard%20towers%20but%20there%20was%20a%20gap%20from%20the%20northeast.%20%20A%20very%20light%20and%20inconsistent%20breeze%20blew%2C%20not%20enough%20to%20dissipate%20smoke%20but%20enough%20to%20make%20the%20structure%20creak%20and%20moan.%0A%0AI%20ran%20through%20the%20checklist%20again%20before%20fully%20committing%20to%20the%20assault.%20%20I%20noticed%20the%20rondel%20dagger%20for%20the%20first%20time%2C%20it%20was%20in%20a%20sound%20absorbing%20sheath%20on%20belt%20that%20dangled%20between%20my%20legs%20like%20some%20limp%20but%20still%20impressively%20endowed%20koteka.%20%20I%20rather%20have%20it%20on%20the%20side%20of%20my%20hip%20but%20Rico%20said%20we%20mostly%20drilled%20drawing%20the%20dagger%20from%20that%20position%20and%20that%20position%20is%20where%20the%20dagger%20will%20stay.%20%20I%20had%20a%20suppressed%20select%20fire%20handmade%20AKM%20with%20another%20one%20as%20backup%20and%20a%20super%20sledge%20in%20case%20things%20get%20hairy%20with%20close%20quarter%20fighting.%20%20Then%20I%20heard%20flapping.%20%20Change%20of%20plan.%20%20The%20first%20few%20Blood%20Eagle%20roving%20watches%20were%20easy.%20%20Once%20inside%20the%20perimeter%20I%20then%20turned%20and%20tapped%20a%20circling%20scorchbeast%20in%20the%20distance%20with%20a%20few%20rounds%20then%20ducked%20back%20into%20the%20water%20channel.%0A%0AScorchbeasts%20are%20giant%20bats%20the%20size%20of%20a%20three%20or%20four%20story%20building%20that%20scream%20out%20a%20bluish%20light%20and%20urinates%20radioactive%20clouds%20like%20some%20acidic%20dirty%20bomb.%20They%20also%20has%20some%20telepathic%20ability%20with%20the%20red%20zombies%20and%20other%20creatures%20which%20I%27m%20sure%20they%u2019re%20waking%20up%20now.%20%20There%27s%20activity%20all%20along%20the%20Crimson%20Prospect%27s%20upper%20floors%20as%20silhouettes%20appeared%20and%20shouted%20while%20pointing%20up%20at%20the%20dark%20sky.%20%20%20The%20base%27s%20distracted%20auto%20turrets%20lit%20up%20and%20everyone%20started%20to%20make%20noise%2C%20the%20exact%20opposite%20of%20what%20to%20do%20when%20there%27s%20a%20giant%20angry%20bat.%20%20%20%0A%0AI%20tend%20to%20use%20suppressed%20ballistic%20weapons.%20%20Shoosh%20tubes%20still%20made%20a%20lot%20of%20noise%20but%20the%20sound%20has%20been%20changed%20enough%20where%20the%20gunfire%20direction%20is%20more%20difficult%20to%20figure%20out.%20%20They%20heat%20the%20barrel%20up%20rapidly%20which%20is%20why%20a%20backup%20was%20carried%2C%20something%20that%27s%20an%20easy%20option%20for%20power%20armor.%20%20Of%20course%20being%20in%20a%20PA%20meant%20blowback%20isn%27t%20an%20issue%20on%20the%20eyes%20although%20optics%20may%20eventually%20needed%20to%20be%20cleaned.%20%20The%20suppressor%20also%20reduced%20muzzle%20flash%20which%20allows%20the%20PA%27s%20infrared%20to%20work%20well%2C%20very%20well.%20%20It%27s%20like%20looking%20through%20one%20of%20the%20Silver%20Shroud%27s%20night%20vision%20gadgets%20from%20the%20Unstoppables%20comics.%0A%0AI%20took%20out%20as%20many%20as%20the%20turrets%20as%20possible%20whenever%20the%20blue%20rings%20materialized%20from%20the%20scorchbeast%20to%20cover%20my%20presence.%20%20Rico%20had%20the%20same%20idea%20as%20I%20noticed%20random%20Blood%20Eagles%20were%20dropping%20just%20outside%20of%20the%20scorchbeast%27s%20blast%20area%20while%20the%20rest%20were%20dealing%20with%20the%20red%20zombies.%20%20Although%20doing%20everything%20manually%20was%20part%20of%20the%20manual%20of%20arms%2C%20the%20PA%27s%20arms%20and%20waldos%20are%20doing%20most%20of%20the%20work%20reloading%20and%20pulling%20the%20charging%20handle%2C%20keeping%20count%20of%20how%20many%20rounds%20fired%2C%20and%20best%20guess%20adjusting%20the%20piper%20on%20the%20heads%20up%20display%20for%20the%20condition%20of%20the%20barrel.%20%20There%27s%20still%20sporadic%20gunfire%20when%20a%20huge%20red%20bloom%20from%20the%20tower%20dropped%20on%20the%20ground%20hard%20enough%20to%20shake%20it%20with%20a%20booming%20echo.%20%20It%20was%20Kermes.%20%0A%0AA%20white-hot%20spark%20glanced%20across%20his%20silhouette%20as%20my%20power%20armor%27s%20HUD%20adjust%20the%20bloom%20to%20reveal%20details.%20%20Another%20spark%20appeared%20at%20a%20different%20part%20of%20the%20image.%20%20After%20a%20few%20more%20Rico%20stopped.%20%20I%20wasn%27t%20sure%20if%20he%20was%20reloading%20until%20there%20was%20a%20sudden%20an%20explosion%20that%20made%20the%20infrared%20overlay%20cut%20out%20and%20bathing%20Kermes%20in%20bright%20yellow%20light.%20%20He%20was%20firing%20continuously%20at%20the%20scorchbeast%20and%20didn%27t%20even%20noticed%20Rico%27s%20rounds.%0A%0AUnlike%20the%20crayon%20chomping%20rounded%20space%20marine-like%20PA%20I%20was%20in%2C%20the%20raider%20PA%20had%20welded%20cage-like%20steel%20grids%20serving%20as%20slat%20armor%20against%20rocket%20propelled%20grenades%20that%20curved%20around%20the%20helmet%2C%20the%20shoulders%20and%20of%20course%20the%20crotch.%20%20It%20had%20a%20thick%20life%20preserver-like%20armor%20going%20around%20the%20neck%20acting%20like%20a%20bevor%2C%20and%20anti-homeless%20spikes%20welded%20onto%20the%20lower%20torso%20area.%20%20Definitely%20do%20not%20want%20to%20trip%20in%20front%20of%20that%20suit%20unarmored.%0A%0AThe%20scorchbeast%20landed%20on%20the%20ground%20with%20a%20crash%2C%20its%20green%20eyes%20taking%20in%20the%20destroyed%20catwalks%2C%20burning%20wooden%20shacks%2C%20and%20confused%20gunfire.%20%20It%20decided%20that%20it%20ha%20enough%20and%20quickly%20crawled%20away%2C%20probably%20towards%20the%20direction%20of%20the%20nearest%20fissure%20site%20where%20the%20radiation%20can%20heal%20it.%20%20Kermes%20started%20to%20follow%20but%20stopped%2C%20looking%20down%20at%20his%20microfusion%20cells.%20%20He%20was%20too%20low%20on%20ammo%20to%20finish%20the%20kill.%0A%0AApparently%20Rico%20gave%20up%20trying%20to%20penetrate%20his%20armor%20and%20that%20explosion%20was%20him%20igniting%20fuel%20drums%20to%20mask%20his%20shooting%20location.%20%20I%20let%20off%20controlled%20bursts%20from%20the%20AKM%2C%20lots%20of%20hits%20with%20no%20penetration.%20%20Noticing%20the%20clods%20of%20damp%20earth%20jumping%20up%20all%20around%20him%20Kermes%20spun%20around%20and%20saw%20me.%20%20He%20ran.%0A%0AWhat.%20%20The.%20%20Hell.%20%20I%20chased%20after%20him%20both%20of%20us%20knocking%20over%20Blood%20Eagles%20and%20Scorched%2C%20flashed%20past%20a%20water%20tower%20and%20over%20the%20western%20bridge%20out%20of%20the%20base.%20%20I%20can%20still%20see%20Kermes%20appearing%20and%20disappearing%20every%20time%20he%20ducked%20into%20one%20of%20the%20bog%27s%20water%20channels.%20%20I%20saw%20one%20and%20jumped%20over%20it%2C%20the%20PA%20landed%20with%20a%20crash%20and%20I%20kept%20going.%20%20I%20saw%20another%20channel%20and%20jumped%2C%20and%20landed%20with%20a%20loud%20splotch.%20%20I%20could%20feel%20from%20the%20coldness%20seeping%20through%20the%20metal%20that%20I%20was%20stuck%20waist-deep%20in%20the%20cold%20muck.%0A%0AI%20tried%20using%20a%20line%20that%27s%20part%20of%20a%20the%20bog%20kit%20but%20there%20was%20nothing%20around%20for%20it%20to%20latch%20on%20to.%20%20It%20was%20pointless%20to%20detonate%20the%20emergency%20escape%20CADs%20to%20force%20an%20exit%2C%20that%20would%20only%20let%20in%20mud%20and%20water%20while%20not%20allowing%20me%20to%20fully%20leave%20the%20PA.%20%20Instead%20of%20making%20a%20lot%20of%20noise%20I%20decided%20to%20reduce%20power%20to%20
