I%20was%20born%20in%20Norfolk%20and%20lived%20in%20Suffolk.%20So%20I%20thought%20I%20knew%20those%20two%20counties.%20But%20of%20course%20there%20is%20more%20to%20Norfolk%20than%20Norwich%2C%20Cromer%2C%20Yarmouth%20and%20Kings%20Lynn%2C%20as%20there%20is%20to%20Suffolk%20than%20Ipswich%2C%20Lowestoft%2C%20Stowmarket%20and%20Bury%20St.%20Edmunds.%20And%20so%20on%20My%20friend%2C%20Simon%20K%2C%20runs%20a%20fabulous%20website%2C%20which%20I%20link%20to%20on%20EA%20churches%2C%20and%20on%20his%20Suffolk%20Church%20page%20he%20has%20visited%20707%20Suffolk%20churches%2C%20and%20909%20Norfolk%20churches.%20That%20is%20a%20lot%20of%20churches%20for%20two%20counties%20to%20share%2C%20and%20many%20of%20those%20churches%20are%20ancient%2C%20flint%20built%2C%20round%20towered%20or%20have%20wall%20paintings%2C%20wooden%20roof%20angels%20or%20something%20worth%20the%20effort%20of%20going%20to%20see%20or%20seeking%20out%20the%20keyholder%20to%20gain%20access.%0A%0AWhat%20I%20mean%20is%20that%20there%20is%20no%20way%20someone%20who%20only%20had%20their%20own%20car%20until%201984%2C%20and%20had%20little%20interest%20in%20churches%20or%20parishes%20could%20have%20heard%20of%20most%20of%20the%20parishes%20in%20the%20two%20counties%2C%20and%20so%20a%20parish%20church%20like%20St%20George.%0A%0AI%20saw%20St%20George%20from%20the%20main%20road%2C%20I%20was%20taking%20a%20short%20cut%20to%20join%20the%20A14%20and%20from%20there%20to%20the%20A12%20and%20south%20on%20what%20I%20hoped%20my%20my%20last%20trip%20of%20the%20year%20to%20lowestoft%20as%20Mother%20is%20now%20out%20of%20hospital%20and%20in%20the%20care%20of%20district%20nurses%20in%20order%20to%20get%20put%20back%20on%20her%20feet.%0A%0ASo%20I%20saw%20the%20tower%20of%20St%20George%20from%20about%20half%20a%20mile%20away%2C%20and%20thought%20I%20had%20enough%20time%20to%20go%20over%20and%20see%20inside%20if%20I%20could.%0A%0AI%20parked%20at%20the%20end%20of%20a%20cul-de-sac%20of%20new%20bungalows%2C%20and%20as%20I%20walk%20up%20the%20bank%20to%20the%20gate%20into%20the%20churchyard%2C%20the%20clean%20lines%20of%20the%20tower%2C%20well%2C%20towered%20over%20me.%20%0A%0AIn%20the%20porch%20I%20tried%20the%20door%20and%20found%20it%20locked%2C%20but%20the%20keyholder%20list%20made%20it%20clear%20that%20the%20nearest%20one%2C%20at%20Christmas%20Cottage%2C%20was%20just%20over%20the%20road.%20So%2C%20why%20not%20try%2C%20Ian%3F%0A%0AI%20went%20to%20the%20cottage%20and%20rang%20the%20bell.%20I%20had%20to%20fill%20out%20my%20details%20in%20a%20ledger%2C%20a%20sensible%20measure.%20But%20I%20showed%20by%20driving%20licence%20to%20prove%20that%20I%20was%20who%20I%20claimed.%20Little%20did%20I%20know%20the%20small%20village%20I%20lived%20in%20had%20been%20noticed.%20More%20of%20that%20in%20a%20minute.%0A%0AInside%20St%20George%2C%20you%20eye%20is%20stolen%20by%20the%20fabulous%20pew%20ends%3B%20animals%20of%20all%20kinds%2C%20real%20and%20imaginary%2C%20and%20most%20had%20not%20been%20defaced%2C%20only%20those%20of%20obvious%20human%20form.%20One%20with%20the%20body%20of%20a%20chicken%20but%20a%20clear%20human%20face%20had%20been%20left%20alone%2C%20thus%20is%20the%20madness%20of%20the%20puritan%27s%20mind.%0A%0AI%20decided%20that%20I%20would%20record%20every%20pew%20end%20figure%2C%20and%20many%20whole%20pew%20ends%20so%20wonderful%20that%20they%20were.%0A%0AThere%20is%20the%20feint%20outline%20of%20a%20huge%20wall%20painting%2C%20Simon%20says%20it%20was%20of%20St.%20Christopher.%20It%20would%20have%20been%20most%20impressive%20when%20freshly%20painted.%20There%20is%20also%20a%20fine%20set%20of%20misericords.%20%0A%0ASt%20George%27s%20glory%20is%20the%20altarpiece%2C%20into%20detail%20Simon%20goes%20below.%20It%20is%20alarmed%2C%20so%20you%20cannot%20look%20at%20them%20too%20closely%2C%20sadly%2C%20but%20such%20is%20a%20sign%20of%20the%20times.%0A%0AI%20took%20the%20keys%20back%2C%20and%20the%20lady%20of%20the%20house%20came%20to%20speak%20to%20me%20as%20she%20had%20been%20told%20by%20her%20husband%20that%20I%20was%20from%20Cliffe%20in%20Kent%2C%20which%20is%20where%20her%20family%20is%20from.%20Sadly%2C%20I%20am%20not%20from%2C%20nor%20live%20in%20Cliffe.%20For%20once%20there%20was%20indeed%20two%20Cliffs%20in%20Kent%2C%20one%20on%20the%20Hoo%20Peninsular%2C%20where%20her%20family%20is%20from%2C%20and%20one%20near%20to%20Dover.%20Many%20years%20ago%2C%20Cliffe%20near%20to%20Dover%20was%20called%20WestCliffe%20to%20differentiate%20it%20from%20its%20namesake%20further%20north.%20I%20explained%20this%20to%20her%2C%20but%20said%20St%20Helen%20in%20Cliffe%20is%20one%20of%20my%20favourite%20Kent%20churches%2C%20built%20of%20alternate%20layers%20of%20black%20and%20light%20flints%20and%20stone%2C%20in%20sunlight%20it%20glistens%20and%20sparkles.%0A%0AAlthough%20St%20George%20here%20in%20Stowlangtoft%20is%20a%20fine%20church%2C%20it%20is%20in%20a%20poor%20state%20of%20repair%2C%20and%20is%20due%20to%20be%20made%20redundant%20in%20the%20new%20year.%20Always%20sad%20when%20that%20happens%20to%20a%20parish%20church%2C%20but%20it%20is%20likely%20to%20be%20taken%20over%20by%20the%20CCT%2C%20but%20then%20who%20will%20volunteer%20to%20keep%20it%20tidy%20when%20the%20old%20wardens%20and%20keyholders%20are%20too%20old.%0A%0AStowlangtoft%20is%20a%20fabulous%20church%20and%20so%20glad%20am%20I%20that%20I%20spent%2040%20minutes%20of%20my%20time%20to%20visit%20it.%20Go%20to%20see%20it%20now%20before%20it%20is%20too%20late%21%0A%0A-------------------------------------------%0A%0AIn%20the%20summer%20of%202003%2C%20this%20website%20became%20a%20six-part%20series%20on%20BBC%20Radio%20Suffolk.%20Something%20I%20said%20in%20the%20fourth%20programme%2C%20about%20Hessett%2C%20generated%20a%20fair%20amount%20of%20correspondence.%20Referring%20to%20the%20way%20many%20churches%20were%20restored%20in%20the%2019th%20century%2C%20I%20observed%20that%20when%20we%20enter%20a%20medieval%20church%2C%20we%20are%20encountering%20a%20Victorian%20vision%20of%20the%20medieval%3B%20even%20when%20the%20actual%20furnishings%20and%20fittings%20are%20medieval%2C%20the%20whole%20piece%20is%20still%20a%20Victorian%20conception.%0A%0APeople%20wrote%20to%20me%20and%20said%20things%20like%20%26quot%3Bbut%20in%20that%20case%2C%20Simon%2C%20how%20do%20we%20know%20what%20was%20there%20originally%20and%20what%20wasn%27t%3F%26quot%3B.%20To%20which%20my%20reply%20was%20the%20enigmatic%20%26quot%3Bassume%20that%20nothing%20is%20as%20it%20first%20appears%2C%20as%20Sherlock%20Holmes%20said%26quot%3B.%20And%20if%20he%20didn%27t%2C%20then%20he%20should%20have%20done.%0A%0AA%20prime%20example%20of%20a%20church%20that%20assumes%20a%20continuity%20that%20may%20not%20actually%20be%20the%20truth%20is%20here%20in%20the%20flat%20fields%20between%20Woolpit%20and%20Ixworth.%20This%20part%20of%20Suffolk%20can%20be%20rather%20bleak%2C%20especially%20in%20late%20October%2C%20but%20England%27s%20finest%20summer%20and%20autumn%20for%20decades%20had%20left%20the%20churchyard%20here%20verdant%20and%20golden%2C%20as%20beautiful%20a%20place%20as%20any%20I%27d%20seen%20that%20year.%20The%20church%20is%20large%2C%20and%20sits%20on%20a%20mound%20that%20has%20been%20cut%20down%20on%20one%20side%20by%20the%20road.%20I%20walked%20up%20the%20slope%2C%20past%20the%20memorial%20to%20the%20art%20critic%20Peter%20Fuller%20and%20his%20unborn%20son%2C%20which%20never%20fails%20to%20move%20me.%20It%20is%20by%20the%20sculptor%20Glynn%20Williams%2C%20and%20Sister%20Wendy%20Beckett%20says%20of%20it%20that%20it%20cannot%20be%20pinned%20down%20and%20encapsulated%2C%20it%20defeats%20the%20categories%20of%20the%20mere%20mind%20and%20sings%20to%20us%20of%20our%20deeper%20self.%0A%0AOverwhelmed%20as%20you%20may%20be%20by%20it%2C%20don%27t%20fail%20to%20spot%20the%20broken%20window%20tracery%20that%20has%20been%20used%20to%20build%20the%20wall%20here%2C%20for%20thereby%20hangs%20a%20tale.%0A%0ASt%20George%2C%20in%20case%20you%20don%27t%20know%2C%20is%20one%20of%20the%20great%20Suffolk%20churches.%20Although%20it%20may%20externally%20appear%20a%20little%20severe%2C%20and%20is%20by%20no%20means%20as%20grand%20as%20Blythburgh%2C%20Long%20Melford%20and%20the%20rest%2C%20it%20is%20a%20treasure%20house%20of%20the%20medieval%20inside.%20Unusually%20for%20a%20church%20of%20its%20date%2C%20it%20was%20all%20rebuilt%20in%20one%20go%2C%20in%20the%20late%2014th%20century%2C%20and%20the%20perpendicular%20windows%20are%20not%20yet%20full%20of%20the%20%27walls%20of%20glass%27%20confidence%20that%20the%20subsequent%20century%20would%20see.%20The%20tracery%20appears%20to%20have%20been%20repaired%2C%20and%20possibly%20even%20renewed%2C%20which%20may%20explain%20why%20there%20is%20broken%20medieval%20tracery%20in%20the%20churchyard%20wall.%20However%2C%20it%20doesn%27t%20take%20much%20to%20see%20that%20the%20tracery%20in%20the%20wall%20is%20not%20perpendicular%20at%20all%2C%20but%20decorated.%20So%20it%20may%20be%20that%20the%20broken%20tracery%20is%20from%20the%20original%20church%20that%20the%20late%2014th%20century%20church%20replaced.%20But%20the%20wall%20isn%27t%20medieval%2C%20so%20where%20had%20it%20been%20all%20those%20years%3F%0A%0AAnother%20survival%20from%20the%20earlier%20church%20is%20the%20font.%20It%20also%20asks%20some%20questions.%20Unusually%2C%20it%20features%20a%20Saint%20on%20seven%20of%20the%20panels%2C%20Christ%20being%20on%20the%20westwards%20face.%20Mortlock%20dates%20it%20to%20the%20early%2014th%20century%2C%20and%20the%20Saints%20it%20shows%20are%20familiar%20cults%20from%20that%20time%3A%20St%20Margaret%2C%20St%20Catherine%2C%20St%20Peter%20and%20St%20Paul%2C%20and%20less%20commonly%20St%20George.%20The%20cult%20of%20St%20George%20was%20at%20its%20height%20in%20the%20early%20years%20of%20the%2014th%20century.%20Mortlock%20describes%20the%20font%20as%20mutilated%2C%20and%20it%20certainly%20isn%27t%20looking%20its%20best.%20But%20I%20think%20there%20is%20more%20going%20on%20here%20than%20meets%20the%20eye.%20Fonts%20were%20plastered%20over%20in%20Elizabethan%20times%2C%20and%20only%20relief%20that%20stood%20proud%20of%20the%20plaster%20was%20mutilated.%20These%20are%20all%20shallow%20reliefs%2C%20and%20I%20do%20not%20think%20they%20have%20been%20mutilated%20at%20all.%20To%20my%20eye%20at%20least%2C%20this%20stonework%20appears%20weathered.%20I%20wonder%20if%20this%20font%20was%20removed%20from%20the%20church%2C%20probably%20in%20the%20mid-17th%20century%2C%20and%20served%20an%20outdoor%20purpose%20until%20it%20was%20returned%20in%20the%2019th%20century.%0A%0AThe%20story%20of%20this%20church%20in%20the%2019th%20century%20is%20well-documented.%20In%201832%2C%20as%20part%20of%20his%20grand%20tour%20of%20Suffolk%2C%20David%20Davy%20visited%2C%20and%20was%20pleased%20to%20find%20that%20the%20church%20was%20at%20last%20undergoing%20repair.%20The%20chancel%20had%20been%20roofless%2C%20and%20the%20nave%20used%20for%20services.%20A%20new%20Rectory%20was%20being%20built.%20Who%20was%20the%20catalyst%20behind%20all%20this%3F%20His%20name%20was%20Samuel%20Rickards%2C%20and%20he%20was%20Rector%20here%20for%20almost%20the%20middle%20forty%20years%20of%20the%2019th%20century.%20Roy%20Tricker%20notes%20that%20he%20was%20a%20good%20friend%20of%20John%20Henry%20Newman%2C%20the%20future%20Cardinal%2C%20and%20they%20often%20corresponded%20on%20the%20subject%20of%20the%20pre-Reformation%20ordering%20of%20English%20churches.%20It%20is%20interesting%20to%20think%20how%2C%20at%20this%20seminal%20moment%2C%20Rickards%20might%20have%20informed%20the%20thought%20of%20the%20Oxford%20Movement.%20Sadly%2C%20when%20Newman%20became%20a%20Catholic%20Rickards%20broke%20off%20all%20correspondence%20with%20him.%0A%0ADuring%20the%20course%20of%20the%201840s%20and%201850s%2C%20Rickards%20transformed%20Stowlangtoft%20church.%20He%20got%20the%20great%20Ipswich%20woodcarver%20Henry%20Ringham%20in%20to%20restore%2C%20replicate%20and%20complete%20the%20marvellous%20set%20of%20bench%20ends%20-%20Ringham%20did%20the%20same%20thing%20at%20Woolpit%2C%20a%20few%20miles%20away.%20Ringham%27s%20work%20is%20so%20good%20that%20it%20is%20sometimes%20hard%20for%20the%20inexperienced%20eye%20to%20detect%20it%3B%20however%2C%20as%20at%20Woolpit%2C%20Ringham%20only%20copied%20animals%20here%2C%20and%20the%20wierder%20stuff%20is%20all%20medieval%2C%20and%20probably%20dates%20from%20the%20rebuilding%20of%20the%20church.%20The%20glory%20of%20Stowlangtoft%27s%20bench%20ends%20is%20partly%20the%20sheer%20quantity%20-%20there%20are%20perhaps%2060%20carvings%20-%20but%20also%20that%20there%20are%20several%20unique%20subjects%3B%20you%20can%20see%20some%20of%20them%20below.%0A%0A%0AThe%20carvings%20appear%20to%20be%20part%20of%20the%20same%20group%20as%20Woolpit%20and%20Tostock%20-%20you%20will%20recognise%20the%20unicorn%2C%20the%20chained%20bear%2C%20the%20bull%20playing%20a%20harp%2C%20the%20bird%20with%20a%20man%27s%20head%2C%20from%20similar%20carvings%20elsewhere.%20And%20then%20hopefully%20that%20little%20alarm%20bell%20in%20your%20heard%20should%20start%20to%20go%20%26quot%3BHmmmm.....%26quot%3B%20because%20some%20of%20the%20carvings%20here%20are%20clearly%20not%20from%20the%20same%20group.%20It%20is%20hard%20to%20believe%20that%20the%20mermaid%20and%20the%20owl%2C%20for%20example%2C%20are%20from%20the%20same%20workshop%2C%20or%20even%20from%20the%20same%20decade.%20The%20benches%20themselves%20are%20no%20clue%3B%20it%20was%20common%20practice%20in%20the%2019th%20century%20to%20replace%20medieval%20bench%20ends%20on%20modern%20benches%2C%20or%20on%20medieval%20benches%2C%20or%20even%20on%20modern%20benches%20made%20out%20of%20medieval%20timber%20%28as%20happened%20at%20Blythburgh%29.%20Could%20it%20be%20that%20Samuel%20Rickards%20found%20some%20of%20these%20bench%20ends%20elsewhere%3F%20Could%20he%20have%20been%20the%20kind%20of%20person%20to%20do%20a%20thing%20like%20that%3F%0A%0AWell%2C%20yes%20he%20could.%20As%20Roy%20Tricker%20recalls%2C%20the%20medieval%20roof%20at%20the%20tractarian%20Thomas%20Mozley%27s%20church%20at%20Cholderton%20in%20Wiltshire%20is%20one%20that%20Rickards%20acquired%20after%20finding%20it%20in%20storage%20in%20Ipswich%20docks.%20In%20the%20ferment%20of%20the%20great%2019th%20century%20restoration%20of%20our%20English%20churches%2C%20there%20was%20loads%20of%20medieval%20junk%20lying%20around%2C%20much%20of%20it%20going%20begging.%20But%20was%20Samuel%20Rickards%20the%20kind%20of%20person%20to%20counterfeit%20his%20church%27s%20medieval%20inheritance%3F%0A%0AWell%2C%20yes%20he%20probably%20was.%20Look%20at%20the%20medieval%20roundels%20in%20the%20middle%20window%20on%20the%20south%20side%20of%20the%20nave.%20The%20four%20evangelists%20are%20above%20and%20below%20two%20superb%20representations%20of%20the%20Presentation%20in%20the%20Temple%20and%20the%20Baptism%20of%20Christ.%20You%20can%20see%20them%20below%3B%20click%20on%20them%20to%20enlarge%20them.%20Unfortunately%2C%20they%20are%20not%20medieval%20at%20all%2C%20and%20it%20is%20generally%20accepted%20that%20they%20were%20painted%20by%20a%20daughter%20of%20Samuel%20Rickards%20himself.%20There%20is%20something%20similar%20the%20other%20side%20of%20Bury%20at%20Hawstead.%0A%0ATruly%20medieval%20is%20the%20vast%20St%20Christopher%20wall-painting%20still%20discernible%20on%20the%20north%20wall.%20It%20was%20probably%20one%20of%20the%20last%20to%20be%20painted.%20The%20bench%20ends%20are%20medieval%2C%20of%20course%2C%20as%20is%20the%20fine%20rood-screen%20dado%2C%20albeit%20repainted.%20There%20is%20even%20some%20medieval%20glass%20in%20the%20upper%20tracery%20of%20some%20of%20the%20windows.%20The%20laughable%20stone%20pulpit%20is%20Rickard%27s%20commission%2C%20and%20the%20work%20of%20William%20White.%20What%20can%20Rickards%20have%20been%20thinking%20of%3F%20But%20we%20step%20through%20into%20the%20chancel%2C%20and%20suddenly%20the%20whole%20thing%20moves%20up%20a%20gear.%20For%20here%20are%20some%20things%20that%20are%20truly%20remarkable.%0A%0AIn%20a%20county%20famous%20for%20its%20woodwork%2C%20the%20furnishings%20of%20Stowlangtoft%27s%20chancel%20are%20breathtaking%2C%20even%20awe-inspiring.%20Behind%20the%20rood%20screen%20dado%20is%20Suffolk%27s%20most%20complete%20set%20of%20return%20stalls.%20Most%20striking%20are%20the%20figures%20that%20form%20finials%20to%20the%20stall%20ends.%20They%20are%20participants%20in%20the%20Mass%2C%20including%20two%20Priests%2C%20two%20servers%20and%20two%20acolytes.%20The%20figure%20of%20the%20Priest%20at%20a%20prayer%20desk%20must%20be%20one%20of%20the%20best%20medieval%20images%20in%20Suffolk%3B%20Mortlock%20thought%20the%20stalls%20the%20finest%20in%20England.%20I%20was%20here%20with%20my%20friend%20Aidan%20of%20Sylly%20Suffolk%20fame%2C%20and%20he%20had%20previously%20photographed%20and%20written%20about%20these%20carving%20a%20a%20couple%20of%20years%20ago.%20But%20even%20he%20found%20something%20new%20to%20photograph%2C%20and%20a%20hush%20fell%20on%20the%20chancel%20as%20we%20explored.%0A%0AThe%20benches%20that%20face%20eastwards%20are%20misericords%2C%20and%20beneath%20them%20are%20wonderful%20things%3A%20angels%2C%20lions%20and%20wodewoses%2C%20evangelistic%20symbols%20and%20crowned%20heads.%20A%20hawk%20captures%20a%20hare%2C%20a%20dragon%20sticks%20out%20its%20tongue.%20Between%20the%20seats%20are%20weird%20oriental%20faces.%20Some%20of%20them%20are%20below%3B%20click%20on%20them%20to%20enlarge%20them.%0A%0ANow%2C%20you%20know%20what%20I%20am%20going%20to%20ask%20next.%20How%20much%20of%20this%20is%20from%20this%20church%20originally%3F%20It%20all%20appears%20medieval%20work%2C%20and%20there%20is%20no%20reason%20to%20believe%20it%20might%20not%20have%20been%20moved%20elsewhere%20in%20the%20church%20when%20the%20chancel%20was%20open%20to%20the%20elements.%20What%20evidence%20have%20we%20got%3F%0A%0AFirstly%2C%20we%20should%20notice%20that%20the%20only%20other%20Suffolk%20church%20with%20such%20a%20large%20number%20of%20medieval%20misericords%20of%20this%20quality%20is%20just%20a%20mile%20away%2C%20at%20Norton.%20I%20don%27t%20ask%20you%20to%20see%20this%20as%20significant%2C%20merely%20to%20notice%20it%20in%20passing.%20Secondly%2C%20I%20am%20no%20carpenter%2C%20but%20it%20does%20look%20to%20me%20as%20though%20two%20sets%20of%20furnishings%20have%20been%20cobbled%20together%3B%20the%20stalls%20that%20back%20on%20to%20the%20screen%20appear%20to%20have%20been%20integrated%20into%20the%20larger%20structure%20of%20stalls%20and%20desks%20that%20front%20them%20and%20the%20north%20and%20south%20walls.%0A%0AHowever%2C%20if%20you%20look%20closely%20at%20the%20figures%20of%20the%20two%20Deacons%2C%20you%20will%20see%20that%20they%20are%20bearing%20shields%20of%20the%20Ashfield%20and%20Peche%20families.%20The%20Ashfield%20arms%20also%20appear%20on%20the%20rood%20screen%2C%20and%20the%20Ashfields%20were%20the%20major%20donors%20when%20the%20church%20was%20rebuilt%20in%20the%2014th%20century.%20So%20on%20balance%20I%20am%20inclined%20to%20think%20that%20the%20greater%20part%20of%20the%20stall%20structure%20was%20in%20this%20church%20originally%20from%20when%20it%20was%20rebuilt.%20And%20the%20misericords%3F%20Well%2C%20I%20don%27t%20know.%20But%20I%20think%20they%20have%20to%20be%20considered%20as%20part%20of%20the%20same%20set%20as%20those%20at%20Norton.%20In%20which%20case%20they%20may%20have%20come%20from%20the%20same%20church%2C%20which%20may%20have%20been%20this%20one%2C%20but%20may%20not%20have%20been.%20Almost%20certainly%2C%20the%20stalls%20at%20Norton%20did%20not%20come%20from%20Norton%20church%2C%20and%20folklore%20has%20it%20that%20they%20were%20originally%20in%20the%20quire%20of%20Bury%20Abbey.%20Hmm....%0A%0AOther%20remarkable%20things%20in%20St%20George%20include%20FE%20Howard%27s%20beautiful%20war%20memorial%20in%20the%20former%20north%20doorway%2C%20and%20in%20the%20opposite%20corner%20of%20the%20nave%20Hugh%20Easton%27s%20gorgeous%20St%20George%2C%20which%20serves%20the%20same%20purpose.%20It%20is%20as%20good%20as%20his%20work%20at%20Elveden.%20Back%20up%20in%20the%20chancel%20is%20a%20delightful%20painted%20pipe%20organ%20which%20was%20apparently%20exhibited%20at%2C%20and%20acquired%20from%2C%20the%20Great%20Exhibition%20of%201851.%0A%0ABut%20St%20George%20at%20Stowlangtoft%20is%2C%20of%20course%2C%20most%20famous%20for%20the%20Flemish%20carvings%20that%20flank%20the%20rather%20heavy%20altarpiece.%20They%20were%20given%20to%20the%20church%20by%20Henry%20Wilson%20of%20Stowlangtoft%20Hall%2C%20who%20allegedly%20found%20them%20in%20an%20Ixworth%20junk%20shop.%20They%20show%20images%20from%20the%20crucifixion%20story%2C%20but%20are%20not%20Stations%20of%20the%20Cross%20as%20some%20guides%20suggest.%20They%20date%20from%20the%201480s%2C%20and%20were%20almost%20certainly%20the%20altarpiece%20of%20a%20French%20or%20Flemish%20monastery%20that%20was%20sacked%20during%20the%20French%20Revolution.%20I%20had%20seen%20something%20similar%20at%20Baumes-les-Messieurs%20in%20the%20French%20Jura%20a%20few%20weeks%20before.%20There%2C%20the%20carvings%20are%20brightly%20painted%2C%20as%20these%20once%20were%2C%20and%20piled%20up%20in%20a%20block%20rather%20than%20spread%20out%20in%20a%20line.%20The%20niches%2C%20and%20crowning%20arches%20above%20them%2C%20are%2019th%20century.%20My%20favourite%20images%20are%20the%20Pieta%20and%20the%20Mouth%20of%20Hell.%20Click%20on%20the%20images%20below.%0A%0AOne%20cold%20winter%27s%20night%20in%20January%201977%2C%20a%20gang%20of%20thieves%20broke%20into%20this%20locked%20church%20and%20stole%20them.%20Nothing%20more%20was%20seen%20or%20heard%20of%20them%20until%201982%2C%20when%20they%20were%20discovered%20on%20display%20in%20an%20Amsterdam%20art%20gallery.%20Their%20journey%20had%20been%20a%20convoluted%20one%3B%20taken%20to%20Holland%2C%20they%20were%20used%20as%20security%20for%20a%20loan%20which%20was%20defaulted%20upon.%20The%20new%20owner%20was%20then%20burgled%2C%20and%20the%20carvings%20were%20fenced%20to%20an%20Amsterdam%20junk%20dealer.%20They%20were%20bought%20from%20his%20shop%2C%20and%20taken%20to%20the%20museum%2C%20which%20immediately%20identified%20them%20as%2015th%20century%20carvings.%20They%20put%20them%20on%20display%2C%20and%20a%20Dutch%20woman%20who%20had%20read%20about%20the%20Stowlangtoft%20theft%20recognised%20them.%0A%0AThe%20parish%20instituted%20legal%20proceedings%20to%20get%20them%20back%3B%20an%20injunction%20was%20taken%20out%20to%20stop%20the%20new%20owner%20removing%20them%20from%20the%20museum.%20The%20parish%20lost%20the%20case%2C%20leaving%20them%20with%20a%20monstrous%20legal%20bill%3B%20but%20the%20story%20has%20a%20happy%20ending.%20A%20Dutch%20businessman%20negotiated%20their%20purchase%20from%20the%20owner%2C%20paid%20off%20the%20legal%20bills%2C%20and%20returned%20the%20carvings%20to%20Stowlangtoft.%20Apparently%20this%20was%20all%20at%20vast%20cost%2C%20but%20the%20businessman%20gave%20the%20gift%20in%20thanks%20for%20Britain%27s%20liberation%20of%20Holland%20for%20the%20Nazis.%20No%2C%20thank%20you%2C%20sir.%0A%0AToday%2C%20the%20carvings%20are%20fixed%20firmly%20in%20place%20and%20alarmed%2C%20so%20they%20won%27t%20be%20going%20walkabout%20again.%20But%20a%20little%20part%20of%20me%20wonders%20if%20they%20really%20should%20be%20here%20at%20all.%20Sure%2C%20they%20are%20medieval%2C%20but%20they%20weren%27t%20here%20originally%3B%20they%20weren%27t%20even%20in%20England%20originally.%20Wouldn%27t%20it%20be%20better%20if%20they%20were%20displayed%20somewhere%20safer%2C%20where%20people%20could%20pay%20to%20see%20them%2C%20and%20provide%20some%20income%20for%20the%20maintenance%20of%20the%20church%20building%3F%20And%20then%2C%20whisper%20it%2C%20St%20George%20might%20even%20be%20kept%20open.%0A%0ASt%20George%2C%20Stowlangtoft%2C%20is%20in%20the%20village%20high%20street.%20Three%20keyholders%20are%20listed%2C%20two%20of%20them%20immediately%20opposite.%20I%20am%20told%20that%20Wednesday%20is%20not%20a%20good%20time%20to%20try%20and%20get%20the%20key%20-%20it%20is%20market%20day%20in%20Bury.%0A%0ASimon%20Knott%0A%0A%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A//https://ift.tt/39cFDs8
