Corn%20Planting%20Full%20Moon%27s%20Last%20Day%20-%20Friday%20May%208th%2C%202020%201%3A16%20AM%20%0A%0AThis%20is%20the%20last%20day%20of%20the%20full%20moon%20of%20May%202020.%0A%0AImage%20cropped%20and%20post-processed%20in%20Apple%27s%20Photos%20Editor.%0A%0AAs%20usual%2C%20the%20wearing%20of%20suitably%20celebratory%20celestial%20attire%20is%20encouraged%20in%20honor%20of%20the%20full%20Moon.%0A%0AThe%20following%20description%20by%20Gordon%20Johnston%20is%20from%20NASA%3A%20%0A%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/1220/the-next-full-moon-is-a-supermoon-flower-moon/%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Esolarsystem.nasa.gov/news/1220/the-next-full-moon-is-a-su...%3C/a%3E%0A%0AThe%20Next%20Full%20Moon%20is%20the%20Flower%20Moon%2C%20Corn%20Planting%20Moon%2C%20Milk%20Moon%2C%20the%20Vesak%20Festival%20Moon%2C%20and%20a%20supermoon.%0A%0AThe%20next%20full%20Moon%20will%20be%20on%20Thursday%20morning%2C%20May%207%2C%202020%2C%20appearing%20opposite%20the%20Sun%20%28in%20Earth-based%20longitude%29%20at%206%3A45%20a.m.%20EDT.%20The%20Moon%20will%20appear%20full%20for%20about%20three%20days%20around%20this%20time%2C%20from%20Tuesday%20evening%20through%20Friday%20morning.%0A%0AThe%20Maine%20Farmer%27s%20Almanac%20first%20published%20%26quot%3BIndian%26quot%3B%20names%20for%20the%20Full%20Moons%20in%20the%201930s.%20According%20to%20this%20almanac%2C%20as%20the%20full%20Moon%20in%20May%20and%20the%20second%20full%20moon%20of%20spring%2C%20the%20Algonquin%20tribes%20of%20what%20is%20now%20the%20northeastern%20United%20States%20called%20this%20the%20Flower%20Moon%2C%20for%20the%20flowers%20that%20are%20abundant%20this%20time%20of%20year.%20Other%20names%20include%20the%20Corn%20Planting%20Moon%20and%20the%20Milk%20Moon.%0A%0AThis%20Full%20Moon%20corresponds%20to%20Vesak%2C%20also%20known%20as%20Buddha%20Purnima%2C%20a%20holiday%20observed%20by%20Buddhists%20across%20Asia.%20Sometimes%20informally%20called%20%26quot%3BBuddha%27s%20Birthday%2C%26quot%3B%20it%20commemorates%20the%20birth%2C%20enlightenment%2C%20and%20death%20of%20Gautama%20Buddha.%20The%20actual%20date%20of%20Vesak%20varies%20depending%20upon%20the%20calendar%20in%20use%20in%20the%20particular%20country%20or%20region%2C%20but%20this%20year%20for%20most%20areas%20it%20falls%20on%20or%20near%20the%20day%20of%20this%20full%20Moon.%0A%0AThis%20is%20the%20last%20in%20a%20series%20of%20four%20supermoons.%20The%20term%20%26quot%3Bsupermoon%26quot%3B%20was%20coined%20by%20the%20astrologer%20Richard%20Nolle%20in%201979%20and%20refers%20to%20either%20a%20new%20or%20full%20moon%20that%20occurs%20within%2090%25%20of%20perigee%2C%20its%20closest%20approach%20to%20Earth%20in%20a%20given%20orbit.%20Under%20this%20definition%2C%20in%20a%20typical%20year%2C%20there%20can%20be%20three%20or%20four%20full%20supermoons%20in%20a%20row%20and%20three%20or%20four%20new%20supermoons%20in%20a%20row.%20For%202020%2C%20the%20four%20full%20Moons%20from%20February%20through%20May%20meet%20this%2090%25%20threshold.%0A%0AIn%20most%20lunisolar%20calendars%2C%20the%20months%20change%20just%20after%20the%20New%20Moon%2C%20and%20Full%20Moons%20fall%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20lunar%20months.%20This%20Full%20Moon%20is%20the%20middle%20of%20Iyar%20in%20the%20Hebrew%20calendar.%20Since%2012%20lunar%20cycles%20are%20about%2011%20days%20shorter%20than%20a%20solar%20year%2C%20lunisolar%20calendars%20add%20an%20extra%20month%20every%20few%20years%20to%20keep%20in%20sync%20with%20the%20seasons.%20This%20Full%20Moon%20is%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20first%20of%20two%20%26quot%3Bfourth%26quot%3B%20months%20of%20the%20Chinese%20calendar.%20In%20the%20Islamic%20calendar%2C%20the%20months%20start%20with%20the%20first%20sighting%20of%20the%20waxing%20crescent%20Moon%20a%20few%20days%20after%20the%20New%20Moon.%20This%20full%20Moon%20is%20near%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20holy%20month%20of%20Ramadan%2C%20the%20month%20in%20which%20the%20Quran%20was%20revealed.%20Observing%20this%20annual%20month%20of%20charitable%20acts%2C%20prayer%2C%20and%20fasting%20from%20dawn%20to%20sunset%20is%20one%20of%20the%20five%20pillars%20of%20Islam.%0A%0AAs%20usual%2C%20the%20wearing%20of%20suitably%20celebratory%20celestial%20attire%20is%20encouraged%20in%20honor%20of%20the%20full%20Moon.
