%3Cu%3EThe%20Postcard%3C/u%3E%0A%0AA%20postcard%20published%20by%20F.W.%20Over%20of%20Streatham.%20On%20the%20back%20they%20have%20printed%3A%0A%0A%27To%20wish%20you%20the%20old%20Greeting%0AA%20Merry%20Christmas%20and%20a%0AHappy%20New%20Year%27.%0A%0AThe%20card%20was%20posted%20in%20Tooting%2C%20London%20S.W.%20on%20the%2022nd.%20December%201905%20to%3A%0A%0AMrs.%20Winkworth%2C%0A55%2C%20Oliphant%20Street%2C%0AQueen%27s%20Park%20Estate%2C%0AWestbourne%20Park%2C%0ALondon.%0A%0AThe%20message%20on%20the%20divided%20back%20of%20the%20card%20was%20as%20follows%3A%0A%0A%26quot%3BFrom%20Aunt%20Annie%26quot%3B.%0A%0A%3Cu%3ETommy%20Flowers%3C/u%3E%0A%0ASo%20what%20else%20happened%20on%20the%20day%20that%20Aunt%20Annie%20posted%20the%20card%3F%0A%0AWell%2C%20the%2022nd.%20December%201905%20marked%20the%20birth%20of%20Thomas%20Harold%20Flowers%2C%20BSc%2C%20DSc%2C%5B1%5D%20MBE%20%2822%20December%201905%20%u2013%2028%20October%201998%29%20was%20an%20English%20engineer%20with%20the%20British%20General%20Post%20Office.%20During%20World%20War%20II%2C%20Flowers%20designed%20and%20built%20Colossus%2C%20the%20world%27s%20first%20programmable%20electronic%20computer%2C%20to%20help%20solve%20encrypted%20German%20messages.%0A%0A%0AContents%0A1Early%20life%0A2World%20War%20II%0A3Post-war%20work%20and%20retirement%0A4See%20also%0A5References%0A6Bibliography%0A7External%20links%0AEarly%20life%0AFlowers%20was%20born%20at%20160%20Abbott%20Road%2C%20Poplar%20in%20London%27s%20East%20End%20on%2022%20December%201905%2C%20the%20son%20of%20a%20bricklayer.%5B2%5D%20Whilst%20undertaking%20an%20apprenticeship%20in%20mechanical%20engineering%20at%20the%20Royal%20Arsenal%2C%20Woolwich%2C%20he%20took%20evening%20classes%20at%20the%20University%20of%20London%20to%20earn%20a%20degree%20in%20electrical%20engineering.%5B2%5D%20In%201926%2C%20he%20joined%20the%20telecommunications%20branch%20of%20the%20General%20Post%20Office%20%28GPO%29%2C%20moving%20to%20work%20at%20the%20research%20station%20at%20Dollis%20Hill%20in%20north-west%20London%20in%201930.%20In%201935%2C%20he%20married%20Eileen%20Margaret%20Green%20and%20the%20couple%20later%20had%20two%20children%2C%20John%20and%20Kenneth.%5B2%5D%0A%0AFrom%201935%20onward%2C%20he%20explored%20the%20use%20of%20electronics%20for%20telephone%20exchanges%20and%20by%201939%2C%20he%20was%20convinced%20that%20an%20all-electronic%20system%20was%20possible.%20A%20background%20in%20switching%20electronics%20would%20prove%20crucial%20for%20his%20computer%20designs.%0A%0AWorld%20War%20II%0AFlowers%27%20first%20contact%20with%20wartime%20codebreaking%20came%20in%20February%201941%20when%20his%20director%2C%20W.%20Gordon%20Radley%20was%20asked%20for%20help%20by%20Alan%20Turing%2C%20who%20was%20working%20at%20Bletchley%20Park%20the%20government%20codebreaking%20establishment%2C%2050%20mi%20%2880%20km%29%20north%20west%20of%20London%20in%20Buckinghamshire.%5B3%5D%20Turing%20wanted%20Flowers%20to%20build%20a%20decoder%20for%20the%20relay-based%20Bombe%20machine%2C%20which%20Turing%20had%20developed%20to%20help%20decrypt%20German%20Enigma%20codes.%20The%20decoder%20project%20was%20abandoned%20but%20Turing%20was%20impressed%20with%20Flowers%27s%20work%2C%20and%20in%20February%201943%20introduced%20him%20to%20Max%20Newman%20who%20was%20leading%20the%20effort%20to%20automate%20part%20of%20the%20cryptanalysis%20of%20the%20Lorenz%20cipher.%20This%20was%20a%20high-level%20German%20code%20generated%20by%20a%20teletypewriter%20in-line%20cipher%20machine%2C%20the%20Lorenz%20SZ40/42%2C%20one%20of%20their%20Geheimschreiber%20%28secret%20writer%29%20systems%2C%20called%20%26quot%3BTunny%26quot%3B%20%28tuna%20fish%29%20by%20the%20British.%20It%20was%20a%20much%20more%20complex%20system%20than%20Enigma%3B%20the%20decoding%20procedure%20involved%20trying%20so%20many%20possibilities%20that%20it%20was%20impractical%20to%20do%20by%20hand.%20Flowers%20and%20Frank%20Morrell%20%28also%20at%20Dollis%20Hill%29%20designed%20the%20Heath%20Robinson%2C%20in%20an%20attempt%20to%20automate%20the%20cryptanalysis%20of%20the%20Lorenz%20SZ-40/42%20cipher%20machine.%5B4%5D%0A%0AFlowers%20proposed%20a%20more%20sophisticated%20alternative%2C%20using%20an%20electronic%20system%2C%20which%20his%20staff%20called%20Colossus%2C%20using%20perhaps%201%2C800%20thermionic%20valves%20%28vacuum%20tubes%29%20instead%20of%20150%20and%20having%20only%20one%20paper%20tape%20instead%20of%20two%20%28which%20required%20synchronisation%29%20by%20generating%20the%20wheel%20patterns%20electronically.%20Because%20the%20most%20complicated%20previous%20electronic%20device%20had%20used%20about%20150%20valves%2C%20some%20were%20sceptical%20that%20the%20system%20would%20be%20reliable.%20Flowers%20countered%20that%20the%20British%20telephone%20system%20used%20thousands%20of%20valves%20and%20was%20reliable%20because%20the%20electronics%20were%20operated%20in%20a%20stable%20environment%20with%20the%20circuitry%20on%20all%20the%20time.%20The%20Bletchley%20management%20were%20not%20convinced%20and%20merely%20encouraged%20Flowers%20to%20proceed%20on%20his%20own.%5B5%5D%20He%20did%20so%20at%20the%20Post%20Office%20Research%20Labs%2C%20using%20some%20of%20his%20own%20funds%20to%20build%20it.%20%5B6%5D%5B7%5D%20Flowers%20had%20first%20met%20%28and%20got%20on%20with%29%20Turing%20in%201939%20but%20was%20treated%20with%20disdain%20by%20Gordon%20Welchman%2C%20because%20of%20his%20advocacy%20of%20valves%20rather%20than%20relays.%20Welchman%20preferred%20the%20views%20of%20Wynn-Williams%20and%20Keene%20of%20the%20British%20Tabulating%20Machine%20Company%20%28BTM%29%20who%20had%20designed%20and%20constructed%20the%20Bombe%20and%20wanted%20Radley%20and%20%26quot%3BMr%20Flowers%20of%20Dollis%20Hill%26quot%3B%20removed%20from%20work%20on%20Colossus%20for%20%26quot%3Bsquandering%20good%20valves%26quot%3B.%5B8%5D%0A%0ADespite%20the%20success%20of%20Colossus%2C%20the%20Heath%20Robinson%20approach%20was%20still%20valuable%20for%20solving%20certain%20problems.%5B9%5D%20The%20final%20development%20of%20the%20concept%20was%20a%20machine%20called%20Super%20Robinson%20that%20was%20designed%20by%20Tommy%20Flowers.%20This%20one%20could%20run%20four%20tapes%20and%20was%20used%20for%20running%20depths%20and%20%26quot%3Bcribs%26quot%3B%20or%20known-plaintext%20attack%20runs.%20%5B9%5D%20On%202%20June%201943%2C%20Flowers%20was%20made%20a%20member%20of%20the%20Order%20of%20the%20British%20Empire.%5B10%5D%5B11%5D%0A%0A%0AIn%201994%2C%20a%20team%20led%20by%20Tony%20Sale%20%28right%29%20began%20a%20reconstruction%20of%20a%20Colossus%20at%20Bletchley%20Park.%20Here%2C%20in%202006%2C%20Sale%20supervises%20the%20breaking%20of%20an%20enciphered%20message%20with%20the%20completed%20machine.%0AFlowers%20gained%20full%20backing%20for%20his%20project%20from%20the%20director%20of%20the%20Post%20Office%20Research%20Station%20at%20Dollis%20Hill%2C%20W.%20G.%20Radley.%20With%20the%20highest%20priority%20for%20acquisition%20of%20parts%2C%20Flowers%27s%20team%20at%20Dollis%20Hill%20built%20the%20first%20machine%20in%20eleven%20months.%20It%20was%20immediately%20dubbed%20%27Colossus%27%20by%20the%20Bletchley%20Park%20staff%20for%20its%20immense%20proportions.%20The%20Mark%201%20Colossus%20operated%20five%20times%20faster%20and%20was%20more%20flexible%20than%20the%20previous%20system%2C%20named%20Heath%20Robinson%2C%20which%20used%20electro-mechanical%20switches.%20The%20first%20Mark%201%2C%20with%201500%20valves%2C%20ran%20at%20Dollis%20Hill%20in%20November%201943%3B%20it%20was%20delivered%20to%20Bletchley%20Park%20in%20January%201944%20where%20it%20was%20assembled%20and%20began%20operation%20in%20early%20February.%5B12%5D%20The%20algorithms%20used%20by%20Colossus%20were%20developed%20by%20W.%20T.%20Tutte%20and%20his%20team%20of%20mathematicians.%5B13%5D%20Colossus%20proved%20to%20be%20efficient%20and%20quick%20against%20the%20twelve-rotor%20Lorenz%20cipher%20SZ42%20machine.%0A%0AIn%20anticipation%20of%20a%20need%20for%20additional%20computers%2C%20Flowers%20was%20already%20working%20on%20Colossus%20Mark%202%20which%20would%20employ%202%2C400%20valves.%5B4%5D%20The%20first%20Mark%202%20went%20into%20service%20at%20Bletchley%20Park%20on%201%20June%201944%20and%20immediately%20produced%20vital%20information%20for%20the%20imminent%20D-Day%20landings%20planned%20for%20Monday%205%20June%20%28postponed%2024%20hours%20by%20bad%20weather%29.%20Flowers%20later%20described%20a%20crucial%20meeting%20between%20Dwight%20D.%20Eisenhower%20and%20his%20staff%20on%205%20June%2C%20during%20which%20a%20courier%20entered%20and%20handed%20Eisenhower%20a%20note%20summarising%20a%20Colossus%20decrypt.%20This%20confirmed%20that%20Adolf%20Hitler%20wanted%20no%20additional%20troops%20moved%20to%20Normandy%2C%20as%20he%20was%20still%20convinced%20that%20the%20preparations%20for%20the%20Normandy%20landings%20were%20a%20feint.%20Handing%20back%20the%20decrypt%2C%20Eisenhower%20announced%20to%20his%20staff%2C%20%26quot%3BWe%20go%20tomorrow%26quot%3B.%5B14%5D%20Earlier%2C%20a%20report%20from%20Field%20Marshal%20Erwin%20Rommel%20on%20the%20western%20defences%20was%20decoded%20by%20Colossus%20and%20revealed%20that%20one%20of%20the%20sites%20chosen%20as%20the%20drop%20site%20for%20a%20US%20parachute%20division%20was%20the%20base%20for%20a%20German%20tank%20division%20and%20the%20site%20was%20changed.%5B15%5D%0A%0AYears%20later%2C%20Flowers%20described%20the%20design%20and%20construction%20of%20the%20computers.%5B16%5D%20Ten%20Colossi%20were%20completed%20and%20used%20during%20the%20Second%20World%20War%20in%20British%20decoding%20efforts%20and%20an%20eleventh%20was%20ready%20for%20commissioning%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20war.%20All%20but%20two%20were%20dismantled%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20war%2C%20%26quot%3BThe%20remaining%20two%20were%20moved%20to%20a%20British%20Intelligence%20department%2C%20GCHQ%20in%20Cheltenham%2C%20Gloucestershire%2C%20where%20they%20may%20have%20played%20a%20significant%20part%20in%20the%20codebreaking%20operations%20of%20the%20Cold%20War%26quot%3B.%5B17%5D%20They%20were%20finally%20decommissioned%20in%201959%20and%201960.%20A%20functioning%20Colossus%20Mark%20II%20was%20rebuilt%20by%20a%20team%20of%20volunteers%20led%20by%20Tony%20Sale%20between%201993%20and%202008.%5B18%5D%20It%20is%20on%20display%20at%20The%20National%20Museum%20of%20Computing%20at%20Bletchley%20Park.%5B12%5D%5B19%5D%0A%0A%0AFront%20view%20of%20the%20Colossus%20rebuild%20showing%2C%20from%20right%20to%20left%20%281%29%20The%20%26quot%3Bbedstead%26quot%3B%20containing%20the%20message%20tape%20in%20its%20continuous%20loop%20and%20with%20a%20second%20one%20loaded.%20%282%29%20The%20J-rack%20containing%20the%20Selection%20Panel%20and%20Plug%20Panel.%20%283%29%20The%20K-rack%20with%20the%20large%20%26quot%3BQ%26quot%3B%20switch%20panel%20and%20sloping%20patch%20panel.%20%284%29%20The%20double%20S-rack%20containing%20the%20control%20panel%20and%2C%20above%20the%20image%20of%20a%20postage%20stamp%2C%20five%20two-line%20counter%20displays.%20%285%29%20The%20electric%20typewriter%20in%20front%20of%20the%20five%20sets%20of%20four%20%26quot%3Bset%20total%26quot%3B%20decade%20switches%20in%20the%20C-rack.%5B20%5D%0APost-war%20work%20and%20retirement%0AAfter%20the%20war%2C%20Flowers%20received%20little%20recognition%20for%20his%20contribution%20to%20cryptanalysis.%5B21%5D%20The%20government%20granted%20him%20%A31%2C000%20payment%20which%20did%20not%20cover%20Flowers%27%20personal%20investment%20in%20the%20equipment%3B%20he%20shared%20much%20of%20the%20money%20amongst%20the%20staff%20who%20had%20helped%20him%20build%20and%20test%20Colossus.%20Flowers%20applied%20for%20a%20loan%20from%20the%20Bank%20of%20England%20to%20build%20another%20machine%20like%20Colossus%20but%20was%20denied%20the%20loan%20because%20the%20bank%20did%20not%20believe%20that%20such%20a%20machine%20could%20work.%5Bcitation%20needed%5D%20He%20could%20not%20argue%20that%20he%20had%20already%20designed%20and%20built%20many%20of%20these%20machines%20because%20his%20work%20on%20Colossus%20was%20covered%20by%20the%20Official%20Secrets%20Act.%20It%20was%20not%20until%20the%201970s%20that%20Flowers%27%20work%20in%20computing%20was%20fully%20acknowledged.%20His%20family%20had%20known%20only%20that%20he%20had%20done%20some%20%27secret%20and%20important%27%20work.%5B22%5D%20He%20remained%20at%20the%20Post%20Office%20Research%20Station%20where%20he%20was%20Head%20of%20the%20Switching%20Division.%20He%20and%20his%20group%20pioneered%20work%20on%20all-electronic%20telephone%20exchanges%2C%20completing%20a%20basic%20design%20by%20about%201950%2C%20which%20led%20on%20to%20the%20Highgate%20Wood%20Telephone%20Exchange.%20He%20was%20also%20involved%20in%20the%20development%20of%20ERNIE.%5B23%5D%20In%201964%2C%20he%20became%20head%20of%20the%20advanced%20development%20at%20Standard%20Telephones%20and%20Cables%20Ltd.%2C%5B24%5D%20where%20he%20continued%20to%20develop%20electronic%20telephone%20switching%20including%20a%20pulse%20amplitude%20modulation%20exchange%2C%20retiring%20in%201969.%5B25%5D%0A%0AIn%201976%2C%20he%20published%20Introduction%20to%20Exchange%20Systems%2C%20a%20book%20on%20the%20engineering%20principles%20of%20telephone%20exchanges.%5B26%5D%0A%0AIn%201977%20Flowers%20was%20made%20an%20honorary%20Doctor%20of%20Science%20by%20Newcastle%20University.%5B27%5D%0A%0AIn%201980%20he%20was%20the%20first%20winner%20of%20the%20Martlesham%20Medal%20in%20recognition%20of%20his%20achievements%20in%20computing.%5B28%5D%0A%0AIn%201993%2C%20he%20received%20a%20certificate%20from%20Hendon%20College%2C%20having%20completed%20a%20basic%20course%20in%20information%20processing%20on%20a%20personal%20computer.%5B29%5D%0A%0AFlowers%20died%20in%201998%20aged%2092%2C%20leaving%20a%20wife%20and%20two%20sons.%5B2%5D%20He%20is%20commemorated%20at%20the%20Post%20Office%20Research%20Station%20site%2C%20which%20became%20a%20housing%20development%2C%20with%20the%20main%20building%20converted%20into%20a%20block%20of%20flats%20and%20an%20access%20road%20called%20Flowers%20Close.%20He%20was%20honoured%20by%20London%20Borough%20of%20Tower%20Hamlets%2C%20where%20he%20was%20born.%20An%20Information%20and%20Communications%20Technology%20%28ICT%29%20centre%20for%20young%20people%2C%20the%20Tommy%20Flowers%20Centre%2C%20opened%20there%20in%20November%202010.%5B30%5D%20The%20centre%20has%20closed%20but%20the%20building%20is%20now%20the%20Tommy%20Flowers%20Centre%2C%20part%20of%20the%20Tower%20Hamlets%20Pupil%20Referral%20Unit.%0A%0AIn%20September%202012%2C%20his%20wartime%20diary%20was%20put%20on%20display%20at%20Bletchley%20Park.%5B31%5D%20A%20road%20in%20Kesgrave%2C%20near%20the%20current%20BT%20Research%20Laboratories%2C%20is%20named%20Tommy%20Flowers%20Drive.%5B32%5D%0A%0AOn%2012%20December%202013%2C%2070%20years%20after%20he%20created%20Colossus%2C%20his%20legacy%20was%20honoured%20with%20a%20memorial%20commissioned%20by%20BT%2C%20successor%20to%20Post%20Office%20Telephones.%20The%20life-size%20bronze%20bust%2C%20designed%20by%20James%20Butler%2C%20was%20unveiled%20by%20Trevor%20Baylis%20at%20Adastral%20Park%2C%20BT%27s%20research%20and%20development%20centre%20in%20Martlesham%20Heath%2C%20near%20Ipswich%2C%20Suffolk.%20BT%20also%20began%20a%20computer%20science%20scholarship%20and%20award%20in%20his%20name.%5B33%5D%0A%0AOn%2029%20September%202016%20BT%20opened%20the%20Tommy%20Flowers%20Institute%5B34%5D%20for%20ICT%20training%20at%20Adastral%20Park%20to%20support%20the%20development%20of%20postgraduates%20transferring%20into%20industry.%20The%20institute%20focuses%20on%20bringing%20ICT-sector%20organisations%20together%20with%20academic%20researchers%20to%20solve%20some%20of%20the%20challenges%20facing%20UK%20businesses%2C%20exploring%20areas%20such%20as%20cybersecurity%2C%20big%20data%2C%20autonomics%20and%20converged%20networks.%20The%20launch%20event%20was%20attended%20by%20professors%20from%20Cambridge%2C%20Oxford%2C%20East%20Anglia%2C%20Essex%2C%20Imperial%2C%20UCL%2C%20Southampton%2C%20Surrey%2C%20and%20Lancaster%20as%20well%20as%20representatives%20from%20the%20National%20Physical%20Laboratory%2C%20Huawei%2C%20Ericsson%2C%20CISCO%2C%20ARM%20and%20ADVA.
