More%20information%20on%20this%20image%20is%20available%20at%20the%20Easton%20Historical%20Society%20in%20North%20Easton%2C%20MA.%0A%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//www.flickr.com/photos/historicalimagesofeastonma/albums%22%3Ewww.flickr.com/photos/historicalimagesofeastonma/albums%3C/a%3E%0A%2C%0Aimage%2C%0AAbout%201870%2C%20a%20street%20level%20view%20looking%20east%20on%20Main%20Street%20from%20the%20Town%20Square.%20It%20would%20be%20more%20than%20ten%20years%20before%20the%20Rockery%20would%20be%20built.%20Still%2C%20this%20was%20a%20gathering%20spot%20for%20many%2C%20and%20the%20photographer%20captured%20an%20everyday%20view%20of%20life%20in%20North%20Easton%20at%20that%20time.%20Main%20Street%20is%20mostly%20undeveloped%2C%20lacking%20the%20storefronts%20we%20all%20know%20today.%20In%20the%20background%2C%20the%20spire%20of%20the%20Catholic%20Church%20%28later%20St.%20Mary%27s%20Hall%29%20rises%20above%20the%20buildings.%20A%20group%20of%20men%20sit%20on%20a%20stonewall%20at%20the%20corner%20%28right%20side%20of%20photo%29.%20A%20lone%20horse%20and%20wagon%20get%20ready%20to%20turn%20onto%20Center%20Street.%20The%20grassy%20patch%20of%20ground%20in%20the%20forefront%20would%20eventually%20give%20way%20to%20a%20watering%20trough%20and%20fountain.%20A%20few%20of%20the%20first%20street%20lights%2C%20filled%20every%20morning%20with%20oil%20and%20lit%20each%20night%2C%20are%20visible.%20Note%20also%20the%20variety%20of%20fences%20along%20the%20front%20of%20the%20buildings.%0Asource%3A%20Easton%20Historical%20Society%0A.%0AThe%20development%20by%20Oliver%20Ames%20and%20Sons%20Corporation%20of%20the%20factory%20and%20village%20land%20use%20in%20a%20rather%20organic%20manner%20with%20a%20mix%20work-related%20classes%20created%20an%20integrated%20geographic%20network.%20%20%20The%20housing%20on%20perimeter%20edge%20with%20factories%20and%20business%20affairs%20in%20the%20center%20creating%20the%20village%20concept%20in%20North%20Easton.%20Other%20important%20concepts%20were%20the%20Furnace%20Village%20Cemetery%2C%20Furnace%20%20%20Village%20Grammar%20School%20and%20the%20Furnace%20Village%20Store%2C%20which%20explains%20Furnace%20Village%20and%20other%20sections%20of%20Easton.%0Asource%3A%20Massachusetts%20Historical%20Commission%0A%2C%0AIn%20front%20of%20the%20%28Oakes%20Ames%20Memorial%20Hall%29%2C%20in%20the%20large%20triangular%20piece%20of%20ground%20enclosed%20between%20Lincoln%20Street%20and%20the%20two%20branches%20of%20Main%20Street%2C%20has%20been%20built%20by%20the%20Ames%20Corporation%2C%20%20from%20designed%20by%20Fred%20Law%20Olmsted%2C%20an%20extensive%20rockwork%2C%20or%20cairn.%20It%20is%20two%20hundred%20and%20fifty%20feet%20long%2C%20twenty-five%20feet%20high%20at%20one%20end%2C%20and%20wide%20enough%20at%20the%20top%20for%20a%20carriage%20to%20drive%20upon%20it%20%20and%20turn%20around.%20Underneath%20it%20is%20an%20arch%2C%20and%20from%20the%20highest%20part%20of%20it%20rises%20a%20tall%20flag-staff.%20The%20whole%20is%20nearly%20covered%20with%20vines%20and%20shrubbery%20in%20the%20summer-time%2C%20and%20presents%20a%20striking%20%20appearance.%20At%20the%20east%20end%20Centre%20Street%20diverges%20from%20Main%20Street%2C%20running%20southerly%2C%20its%20northern%20part%20being%20the%20location%20of%20Carr%27s%20market%2C%20several%20stores%2C%20Spooner%27s%20building%2C%20and%20John%20King%27s%20%20boot-shop%2C%20beyond%20which%20point%20the%20street%20presents%20a%20very%20neat%20and%20attractive%20appearance.%0Asource%3A%20History%20of%20Easton%2C%20William%20L.%20Chaffin%2C%201886%0A.%0AThe%20Rockery%0AIn%201882%2C%20the%20Rockery%20was%20created%20by%20the%20third%20generation%20of%20Ames%20in%20Easton%2C%20who%20brought%20together%20two%20noted%20designers%2C%20architect%2C%20Henry%20Hobson%20Richardson%2C%20and%20landscape%20architect%2C%20Frederick%20%20Law%20Olmsted.%20The%20design%20work%2C%20%u2013%20Cairn%2C%20-%20later%20called%20the%20-Rockery-%20was%20one%20of%20the%20first%20done%20by%20Frederick%20Law%20Olmsted%2C%20Sr.%20in%20Massachusetts.%20The%20Richardson%20projects%20in%20Easton%20were%20given%20to%20the%20%20Town%20by%20a%20private%20benefactor%2C%20the%20Ames%20family%20of%20North%20Easton.%20Most%20of%20Olmsted%u2019s%20early%20projects%20were%20for%20public%20entities%20like%20park%20departments%20or%20an%20Olmsted%20park%20requiring%20public%20reports%20and%20%20accountability.%20The%20third%20generation%20of%20Ames%2C%20children%20of%20Oliver%20Ames%20Jr.%2C%20Frederick%20Lothrop%20Ames%20%281835-1893%29%20and%20Helen%20Angier%20Ames%20%281836-1882%29%20and%20the%20children%20of%20Oliver%27s%20brother%2C%20Oakes%20Ames%2C%20%20who%20were%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%20%281829-1899%29%20and%20Governor%20Oliver%20Ames%2C%20%281831-1895%29.%20Besides%20the%20Rockery%2C%20the%20third%20generation%20of%20Ames%20in%20Easton%20brought%20together%20two%20noted%20designers%2C%20architect%20%20Henry%20Hobson%20Richardson%20%281836-1886%29%20and%20landscape%20architect%20Frederick%20Law%20Olmsted%20%281822-1903%29%2C%20to%20design%20structures%20in%20the%20North%20Easton%20Village.%20The%20structures%20included%20the%20Oliver%20Ames%20Free%20%20Library%20at%2053%20Main%20Street%2C%20the%20Oakes%20Ames%20Memorial%20Hall%20at%20Three%20Barrows%20Street%2C%20and%20the%20Rockery.%20Around%20the%20same%20time%2C%20records%20show%20Henry%20Hobson%20Richardson%20designed%20Frederick%20Lothrop%20%20Ames%20Estate%20Gardner%27s%20Cottage%20at%20137%20Elm%20Street%2C%20Frederick%20Lothrop%20Ames%20Gate%20Lodge%20at%20135%20Elm%20Street%2C%20and%20the%20Old%20Colony%20Railroad%20Station%20at%2080%20Mechanic%20Street.%20The%20Rockery%20is%20bordered%20by%20%20Main%2C%20Lincoln%20and%20Barrows%20Streets%20creating%20a%20triangle%20plot%20of%20land%20landscaping%20history%20for%20a%20memorial%20for%20North%20Easton%27s%20citizens%20lost%20in%20the%20American%20Civil%20War.%20Located%20in%20North%20Easton%2C%20the%20setting%20%20had%20Oakes%20Ames%20Memorial%20Hall%20in%20full%20view%20from%20the%20West%20and%20Oliver%20Ames%20Free%20Library%20further%20north%20at%2053%20Main%20Street%2C%20the%20A.%20A.%20Gilmore%20and%20Company%20at%2066-68%20Main%20Street%20from%20the%20North%2C%20and%20the%20%20Easton%20Public%20High%20School%20overlooking%20from%20the%20South%20at%20Eight%20Barrows%20Street.%20During%20the%20designing%20phase%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn%2C%20-%20Oliver%20Ames%20Free%20Library%2C%20two%20of%20the%20major%20features%20at%20the%20library%u2019s%20%20building%20were%20massive%20mantels%20designed%20by%20Stanford%20White%2C%20who%20was%20in%20Richardson%u2019s%20office%20at%20the%20time%2C%20and%20carved%20by%20Augustus%20Saint-Gaudens.%20Using%20greenery%2C%20stones%20and%20boulders%2C%20Richardson%20%20and%20Olmsted%20were%20consistent%20in%20blending%20in%20the%20Rockery%20with%20the%20Oakes%20Ames%20Memorial%20Hall%20and%20the%20Oliver%20Ames%20Free%20Library.%20On%20September%205%2C%201881%2C%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%20wrote%20to%20Olmsted%20to%20review%20%20the%20grounds%20of%20the%20hall%20and%20asked%20him%20to%20check%20out%20his%20land%2C%20%u2013%20Queset%20%u2013%20at%2051%20Main%20Street.%20On%20October%2010%2C%201881%2C%20Ames%20wrote%20to%20Olmsted%20suggesting%20-If%20you%20have%20the%20plan%20ready%20for%20the%20triangle%20lot%2C%20I%20%20should%20be%20glad%20to%20it%20so%20I%20can%20use%20some%20of%20the%20earth%20that%20has%20got%20to%20be%20removed%20from%20the%20Memorial%20Hall%20lot.%20%u2013%20On%20October%2019%2C%201881%2C%20Ames%20wrote%20Olmsted%20mentioned%20that%20he%20meant%20the%20plan%20of%20the%20%20Memorial%20Hall%20grounds%20and%20the%20-%20triangle%20%u2013%20in%20front%20of%20the%20School%20House.%20Olmsted%20did%20not%20respond%20quickly%2C%20unusual%20for%20him%2C%20caused%20by%20the%20passing%20of%20his%20step-son%20and%20nephew%2C%20Owen%2C%20a%20cattle%20rancher%20%20in%20Montana.%20On%20November%2015%2C%201881%2C%20Ames%20wrote%20Olmsted%20requesting%20him%20to%20send%20the%20plan%20for%20%u2013%20rocks%20work%20%u2013%20on%20the%20southern%20part%20of%20the%20triangle%20in%20front%20of%20the%20School%20House.%20On%20April%2010%2C%201882%2C%20%20Olmsted%20outlined%20some%20of%20the%20features%20of%20the%20design%20for%20the%20triangle.%20Among%20the%20features%20included%20having%20a%20triangle%20grass%20plot%2C%20a%20flag%20staff%2C%20concern%20for%20the%20carriages%20approaching%20the%20Hall%20from%20the%20%20East%20being%20directed%20to%20the%20South%20approach%20to%20the%20Hall%2C%20and%20the%20retaining%20wall%20be%20constructed%20of%20rough%20field%20stone%20in%20an%20elevated%20position%20to%20blend%20in%20with%20the%20Memorial%20Hall%20Grounds.%20A%20major%20focus%20was%20%20to%20have%20a%20ultimate%20view%20of%20the%20out%20of%20door%20concerts%20in%20front%20of%20the%20Memorial%20Hall%20with%20the%20terrace%20and%20stairway%20being%20a%20gallery%20of%20parts%20of%20the%20audience.%20The%20original%20desire%20was%20creating%20a%20cairn%20which%20%20became%20commonly%20known%20as%20the%20%u2013%20Rockery%20-%20by%201885.%20It%20was%20custom%20to%20acknowledge%20notable%20events%20by%20having%20townspeople%20bring%20large%20amounts%20of%20small%20field%20stones%20to%20a%20location%20putting%20them%20in%20a%20%20cone-shaped%20pile.%20In%20April%20of%201882%2C%20Olmsted%20wrote%20to%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%20of%20his%20concerns%20of%20large%20and%20intrusive%20monuments%20-%20the%20oldest%20and%20most%20enduring%20in%20the%20world%2C%20and%20with%20the%20beautiful%20plants%20%20that%20have%20become%20rooted%20in%20them%20and%20which%20spring%20out%20of%20their%20crannies%20or%20have%20grown%20over%20them%2C%20and%20are%20far%20more%20interesting%20and%20pleasant%20to%20see%20than%20the%20greater%20number%20of%20those%20constructed%20of%20%20massive%20masonry%20and%20elaborate%20sculpture.%20%u2013%20He%20added%20that%20plants%20growing%20across%20the%20rocky%20buttress%20would%20symbolize%20peace%20taming%20war.%20Olmsted%20explained%20to%20Oliver%20Ames%20II%2C%20co-owner%20of%20the%20Oliver%20%20Ames%20and%20Sons%20Corporation%20with%20his%20brother%2C%20Oakes%20Ames%2C%20a%20cairn%20related%20monument%20with%20plant%20life%20mixed%20with%20stone%20crafting%20would%20complement%20the%20Ames%20family%u2019s%20legacy%20of%20buildings%20and%20grounds%20%20construction.%20The%20leadership%20of%20the%20Ames%20family%20wish%20for%20the%20school%20children%20of%20Easton%20would%20be%20encouraged%20to%20get%20involved%20in%20the%20planting%20and%20sowing%20of%20flower%20seed.%20Furthermore%2C%20they%20hoped%20the%20%20custody%20of%20the%20flag%20be%20hoisted%20by%20the%20war%20veterans%20residing%20in%20Town%20as%20long%20as%20they%20have%20lived.%20They%20would%20be%20happy%20to%20see%20the%20flag%20up%20on%20Decoration%20Day%20and%20notable%20days.%20A%20simple%20annual%20%20program%20on%20those%20days%20done%20by%20each%20generation%20with%20a%20notation%2C%20-%20passing%20down%20the%20lessons%20of%20war%20and%20keeping%20green%20the%20memories%20of%20its%20heroes.%20%u2013%20In%20May%20of%201882%2C%20Olmsted%20sent%20two%20plans%20%20covering%20the%20%u2013%20General%20Plan%20showing%20Radit%20of%20Curves%20%u2013%20and%20%u2013%20Topo%2C%20Grade%20Plan.%20%u2013%20Olmsted%20envisioned%20using%20plantings%20and%20vines%20like%20euonymus%20radicans%20he%20had%20used%20on%20a%20spruce-pole%20fence%20at%20%20Fairstead%20in%20Brookline%2C%20now%20a%20Olmsted%20National%20Historic%20Site.%20Planting%20used%20like%20%u2013%20glossy%20evergreens%2C%20-%20various%20kinds%20of%20running%20ivy%2C%20and%20rhododendrons%20used%20were%20common%20in%20other%20Ames%20estates%20%20and%20structures.%20Olmsted%20used%20similar%20plants%20in%20his%20works%20at%20%u2013%20Ramble%20%u2013%20in%20Central%20Park%20in%20New%20York%20City%2C%20the%20Overlook%20Terrace%20and%20Ellicott%20Bridge%20in%20Boston%u2019s%20Franklin%20Park%2C%20and%20the%20Agassi%20Bridge%20in%20%20the%20Fens.%20These%20projects%20encompassed%20similar%20uses%20of%20plantings%2C%20stonework%20and%20boulders%20used%20in%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn%20-%20and%20all%20of%20the%20Ames%20construction%20projects%20in%20Easton.%20By%20mid-May%20%20of%201882%2C%20Ames%20-%20had%20men%20waiting%20and%20was%20eager%20to%20begin%20construction%2C%20but%20the%20final%20plan%20was%20not%20quite%20ready.%20%u2013%20On%20May%2029%2C%201882%2C%20the%20grading%20and%20laying%20out%20the%20road%20started%20with%20an%20obstacle%20slowing%20%20the%20work%20down.%20Ames%20wrote%20to%20Olmsted%20stating%20it%20must%20have%20been%20a%20mistake%20as%20the%20%u2013%20boys%20-%20telling%20Ames%20the%20road%20between%20the%20Cairn%20and%20the%20triangle%20was%20narrow.%20On%20June%203%2C%201882%20Olmsted%20submitted%20%20his%20most%20finished%20plan%20for%20the%20%u2013%20Cairn%20-%20and%20park.%20By%20July%20of%201882%2C%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20Cairn%20was%20finished%20with%20no%20working%20plans%20surviving%20the%20daily%20work.%20The%20project%20was%20completed%20without%20a%20%20contractor%20but%20by%20a%20group%20of%20men%20Ames%20had%20on%20hand.%20The%20letter%20of%20April%2010%2C%201882%20noted%20the%20flag%20staff%20was%20included%20in%20the%20work%20to%20be%20done.%20On%20April%203%2C%201883%2C%20Olmsted%20sent%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%20the%20plans%20%20and%20specifications%20for%20the%20flag%20staff%20which%20was%20completed%20shortly%20thereafter.%20In%201887%2C%20Olmsted%20wrote%20in%20a%20letter%20to%20Ames%20that%20he%20had%20%u2013%20partly%20superintendent%20%u2013%20the%20project%20yet%20no%20historical%20records%20of%20%20Olmsted%u2019s%20firm%20directly%20involved%20in%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn.%20-%20In%20its%20day%2C%20it%20was%20a%20known%20fact%20that%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%20oversaw%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn%20-%20on%20a%20day-to-day%20schedule.%20On%20June%20%205%2C%201887%2C%20Olmsted%20was%20in%20great%20consternation%20on%20the%20lack%20of%20implantation%20of%20his%20planting%20plan%2C%20boulder%20placement%2C%20and%20decay%20of%20plantings%20in%20the%20-%20Cairn.%20-%20In%20a%20picture%20in%201895%2C%20Olmsted%u2019s%20concern%20about%20%20the%20lack%20of%20plantings%20must%20have%20been%20heeded%20by%20Ames%20and%20his%20crew%20of%20men.%20The%20image%20of%20the%20new%20schoolhouse%20on%20Lincoln%20Street%20was%20showing%20the%20plantings%20at%20the%20base%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn%20-%20and%20in%20%20between%20the%20boulder%u2019s%20cracks.%20In%20early%20November%20of%201902%2C%20members%20of%20the%20Ames%20family%20asked%20that%20Olmsted%u2019s%20firm%20come%20out%20to%20North%20Easton%20to%20make%20suggestions%20for%20improvements%20and%20plantings%20for%20%20the%20Memorial%20Hall%20and%20the%20-%20Cairn.%20-%20In%20the%201890s%2C%20the%20Olmsted%20firm%20documented%20their%20field%20visits%20by%20including%20detailed%20records%20in%20a%20%u2013%20Report%20of%20Visits%20%u2013%20document.%20On%20November%2012%2C%201902%2C%20Olmsted%u2019s%20%20nephew%2C%20step-son%20and%20business%20partner%2C%20John%20Charles%20Olmsted%20visited%20North%20Easton%2C%20meeting%20with%20Winthrop%20Ames%20and%20William%20Ames.%20They%20went%20to%20view%20the%20Memorial%20Hall%20and%20the%20%u2013%20Cairn%20-%20as%20John%20%20Charles%20Olmsted%20was%20going%20to%20be%20directly%20involved%20in%20the%20carrying%20out%20of%20the%20firm%u2019s%20design%20plan.%20%20In%20the%201890s%2C%20Olmsted%u2019s%20step-son%20was%20involved%20in%20the%20original%20designing%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn%20-%20so%20he%20had%20%20knowledge%20of%20the%20father%u2019s%20intent%20of%20the%20work.%20The%20plan%20was%20extended%20up%20to%20the%20Oliver%20Ames%20Free%20Library%20to%20provide%20a%20high%20shrubbery%20screening%20of%20the%20little%20driveway%20to%20what%20is%20historically%20known%20as%20%20the%20Oakes%20Angier%20Ames%u2019%20place%20at%2051%20Main%20Street.%20Care%20was%20taken%20to%20enhance%20as%20many%20as%20possible%20views%20of%20all%20relative%20settings%20and%20structures%20within%20eyesight%20of%20the%20-%20Cairn.%20-%20In%201935%2C%20in%20her%20book%2C%20%20History%20of%20Unity%20Church%2C%20Mary%20Shreve%20Frothingham%20wrote%20that%20a%20Methodist%20Episcopal%20Society%20built%20a%20small%20white%20building%20at%20the%20eastern%20end%20of%20the%20Rockery%20in%201843.%20By%201855-56%20the%20group%20disbanded%20%20and%20Oliver%20Ames%20paid%20four%20hundred%20dollars%20for%20the%20building%20to%20become%20the%20Unitarian%20Society%20of%20North%20Easton.%20The%20Society%20met%20here%20until%20Oliver%20Ames%20II%20built%20and%20gave%20them%20a%20church%20building%20located%20%20at%2013%20Main%20Street.%20In%201864%2C%20the%20Unitarian%20Society%20met%20in%20a%20building%20which%20was%20constructed%20on%20at%20the%20triangle%20of%20Barrows%2C%20Main%20and%20Lincoln%20Streets.%20In%201875%2C%20the%20Unitarian%20Society%20started%20meeting%20at%20their%20%20new%20church%20building%20at%20the%20Unity%20Church%20of%20North%20Easton%20located%20at%2013%20Main%20Street.%20In%201876%2C%20Oliver%20Ames%20offered%20the%20Methodist%20Episcopal%20Society%20the%20old%20building%20at%20the%20future%20location%20of%20the%20Rockery%20%20to%20the%20church%20to%20be%20moved%20to%209%20Mechanic%20Street%20on%20the%20condition%20they%20would%20move%20it%20and%20fix%20it%20up%20without%20going%20into%20debt.%20In%201916%2C%20the%20Town%20voted%20%24500.00%20to%20be%20raised%20and%20appropriated%20to%20build%20a%20%20bandstand%20in%20North%20Easton.%20This%20was%20done%2C%20and%20the%20bandstand%20stood%20in%20the%20lot%20opposite%20the%20post%20office%20in%20North%20Easton%20until%20the%20year%201941%2C%20when%20it%20was%20tom%20down%2C%20being%20no%20longer%20used.%20All%20the%20%20concerts%20played%20during%20the%20summer%20months%2C%20which%20came%20on%20Monday%20nights%20under%20the%20direction%20of%20Mr.%20Walter%20M.%20Smith%2C%20were%20given%20from%20the%20bandstand%20under%20the%20Rockery.%20A%20graduate%20of%20Oliver%20Ames%20%20High%20School%20could%20still%20attend%20rehearsals%20and%20participate%20in%20the%20summer%20concerts%20that%20were%20held%20on%20the%20steps%20of%20Oakes%20Ames%20Memorial%20Hall%20until%20a%20bandstand%20at%20the%20Rockery%20was%20built%20in%201916.%20The%20%20alumni%20originally%20assumed%20the%20title%20Anna%20C.%20Ames%20Band%2C%20later%2C%20A.C.%20Ames%20Band.%20By%201913%2C%20all%20the%20band%20members%2C%20both%20the%20Oliver%20Ames%20High%20School%20students%20and%20the%20alumni%2C%20were%20considered%20part%20of%20the%20%20Anna%20C.%20Ames%20Band.%20The%201913%20graduation%20program%20lists%20the%20-%20Prelude%20-%20and%20the%20-%20March%20-%20being%20performed%20by%20the%20Anna%20C.%20Ames%20Band.%20After%20Mrs.%20%20Ames%27%20s%20death%20in%201917%2C%20the%20band%20continued%20under%20the%20%20patronage%20of%20her%20younger%20son%2C%20Oakes%20Ames%2C%20and%20the%20direction%20of%20Walter%20M.%20Smith%2C%20until%201932.%20Over%20time%2C%20the%20condition%20of%20the%20-%20Rockery%20-%20deteriorated%20with%20loose%20boulders%2C%20unwanted%20garden%20%20vegetations%2C%20and%20unstable%20stairs.%20Over%20time%2C%20changes%20made%20were%20to%20lower%20the%20height%20from%20the%20original%20height%20of%20twenty-five%20feet%2C%20utility%20poles%20placed%20on%20the%20east%20end%20of%20the%20Rockery%20and%20with%20several%20%20rows%20of%20rocks%20removed%20about%201920.%0Asource%3A%20Easton%20Historical%20Society%0Asource%3B%20Massachusetts%20Historical%20Commission%0Asource%3A%20Ancestry%0Asource%3A%20History%20of%20Easton%2C%20William%20L.%20Chaffin%2C%201886%0Asource%3A%20Easton%u2019s%20Neighborhoods%2C%20Edmund%20C.%20Hands%2C%201995%20%0Asource%3A%20The%20Memorial%20Cairn%2C%20North%20Easton%2C%20MA%2C%20Three%20Generations%20of%20the%20Olmsted%20Firm%2C%20Cynthia%20Zaitzevsky%2C%20Ph.%20D.%2C%201999%0Asource%3A%20Forging%20Ahead%3A%20The%20Ames%20Family%20of%20Easton%2C%20Massachusetts%2C%20Gregory%20J.%20Galer%2C%202002%0A.%0AAmes%20Shovel%20and%20Tool%20Company%20Tenement%20Housing%0AAround%201825%2C%20Oliver%20Ames%20Sr.%2C%20built%20a%20house%20for%20the%20manager%20of%20his%20operations%20in%20Braintree%2C%20which%20was%20the%20start%20of%20building%20and%20rent%20space%20in%20the%20private%20boarding%20house%20for%20the%20company%u2019s%20workers%20%20%20and%20other%20workers%20in%20the%20villages.%20In%201832%2C%20the%20company%2C%20O.%20Ames%2C%20as%20it%20was%20called%20from%201803-1844%2C%20built%20a%20house%20for%20the%20workers%20in%20his%20shops%20in%20location%2C%20now%20known%20as%20the%20War%20Memorial%20Park%20in%20%20West%20%20Bridgewater.%20In%201836%2C%20Oakes%20built%20the%20company%u2019s%20first%20big%20boarding%20house%2C%20with%20enough%20living%20space%20for%20twenty%20workers.%20By%201845%2C%20the%20company%20owned%20twenty%20houses%20not%20occupied%20by%20family%2C%20%20six%20%20dwellings%20have%20names%2C%20and%20fourteen%20dwellings%20averaging%20sixty-five%20dollars%20each%20in%20the%20inventory%20of%20that%20year.%20In%201845%2C%20the%20company%20owned%20twenty%20houses%20for%20employees%2C%20owning%20thirty%20dwellings%20%20by%20%201861%2C%20and%20more%20than%20ninety%20dwellings%20by%201884.%20In%201901%2C%20Oliver%20Ames%20and%20Sons%20Corporation%20transferred%20all%20of%20its%20real%20estate%20to%20Ames%20Shovel%20and%20Tool%20Company.%20The%20reorganization%20was%20the%20result%20%20of%20a%20%20merger%20of%20the%20Ames%20company%20with%20other%20shovel%20and%20handle%20companies.%20In%201930%2C%20with%20the%20focus%20toward%20selling%20some%20of%20its%20holdings%2C%20the%20company%20registered%20two%20sets%20of%20plans%20delineating%20lot%20%20%20boundaries%20for%20sixty-two%20properties%20including%20the%20twelve%20on%20Lincoln%20Street%20%28parcels%2034%20to%2045%29%20and%20others%20on%20Pond%2C%20Mechanic%2C%20Day%2C%20Barrows%2C%20Main%2C%20Canton%2C%20Elm%2C%20and%20Oliver%20Streets%20and%20Picker%20Lane%20off%20%20%20Canton%20Street.%20The%20company%20enlisted%20the%20services%20of%20the%20Boston%20and%20Philadelphia%20auction%20house%2C%20Samuel%20T.%20Freeman%20and%20Company%20to%20auction%20forty-one%20of%20its%20properties%20in%20Easton%2C%20including%20%20eighteen%20%20of%20them%20with%20cottages%2C%20sixteen%20with%20two-family%20houses%2C%20three%20with%20four-family%20dwellings%2C%20two%20stores%2C%20and%20two%20parcels.%20In%201930%2C%20records%20show%20Mary%20S.%20Ames%20Frothingham%20purchased%20all%20the%20%20tenements%20%20houses%20across%20from%20the%20Old%20Colony%20Railroad%20Station%20on%20Mechanic%20Street%20at%20the%20auction%20and%20had%20them%20torn%20down.%20In%201933%2C%20records%20show%20the%20Ames%20Shovel%20and%20Tool%20transferred%20properties%20%20to%20John%20F.%20%20Neal%2C%20a%20lawyer%20from%20Malden%20as%20the%20company%20owners%20may%20have%20simply%20wanted%20to%20pass%20the%20burden%20of%20individual%20transfers%20to%20an%20attorney.%0Asource%3B%20Massachusetts%20Historical%20Commission%0Asource%2C%20Easton%20Historical%20Society%20%0Asource%3A%20History%20of%20Easton%2C%20William%20L.%20Chaffin%2C%201886%0Asource%3A%20Easton%u2019s%20Neighborhoods%2C%20Edmund%20C.%20Hands%2C%201995
