20newest%20and%20strongest%20theories%20about%20the%20makeup%20of%20the%20universe.%0A%0AThe%20room%20is%20silent%20once%20again%20as%20Brett%20and%20the%20others%20are%20struggling%20to%20grasp%20the%20significance%20of%20the%20statement.%0A%0A%u201CMr.%20Beatle%2C%20how%20long%20do%20you%20want%20us%20to%20keep%20you%20turned%20on%3F%u201D%20Davonneasks%2C%20finally%2C%20concerned%20more%20about%20the%20power%20consumption.%0A%0A%u201CHow%20does%20%u2018Forever%u2019%20sound%3F%u201D%20the%20Beatle%20replies%20clearly%20over%20the%20speaker.%0A%0A%23%20%23%20%23%0A%0A%u201CAre%20you%20receiving%20this%3F%u201D%20Lexie%20asks%20me.%0A%0AShe%u2019s%20decided%20she%20wants%20to%20visit%20the%20DNA%20Depository%20again%20to%20%u2018review%20the%20situation%u2019.%20We%u2019ve%20left%20the%20South%20Pole%20and%20have%20reached%20a%20cruising%20altitude%20of%20about%2050%20km.%20At%20this%20height%2C%20the%20air%20is%20pretty%20thin%20and%20the%20oceans%20of%20water%20are%20floating%20mostly%20below%20us%20enough%20so%20that%20we%20shouldn%u2019t%20have%20to%20face%20any%20of%20these%20monster%20waterfalls%20again.%20I%u2019m%20glad%20because%20I%u2019m%20getting%20data%20from%20the%20Intrepid%20that%20it%20wouldn%u2019t%20be%20able%20to%20withstand%20another%20ocean%20down-pour%20like%20that%20another%20time.%20I%u2019ve%20decided%20to%20give%20this%20extreme%20kind%20of%20weather%20a%20new%20name%20for%20the%20history%20books.%20I%20call%20it%2C%20%u2018Ocean-fall%u2019.%0A%0A%u201CYes%2C%20I%u2019m%20hearing%20it%20from%20their%20new%20ship%2C%20the%20Beatle%2C%u201D%20I%20reply%2C%20happy%20to%20have%20news%20of%20a%20related%20creature%20like%20myself.%20I%u2019m%20increasingly%20aware%20that%20the%20Beatle%2C%20as%20they%20are%20calling%20him%2C%20has%20the%20thinking%20power%20of%20at%20least%20one%20hundred%20times%20my%20own%2C%20perhaps%20as%20much%20as%20one%20thousand%20times.%20Only%20time%20will%20tell.%0A%0A%u201CHe%u2019s%20rather%20impressive%2C%u201D%20Lexie%20says.%0A%0A%u201CYes%2C%20and%20he%u2019s%20family%2C%u201D%20I%20add.%0A%0AWhile%20en%20route%2C%20I%u2019m%20working%20in%20the%20back%20of%20my%20mind%20to%20calculate%20how%20long%20it%20will%20take%20them%20to%20reach%20the%20Earth%20after%20they%20launch.%20As%20I%20sort%20through%20all%20of%20the%20permutations%2C%20it%u2019s%20an%20amazingly%20short%20trip%20mainly%20because%20they%20will%20not%20be%20using%20the%20antiquated%20technique%20of%20getting%20captured%20by%20the%20gravity%20of%20the%20target%20planet%20and%20then%20you%20just%20cruising%20along%20at%20a%20speed%20determined%20by%20the%20size%20of%20the%20mass%20ahead%20of%20you%2C%20minus%20the%20depreciating%20force%20of%20the%20mass%20behind%20you.%0A%0AInstead%20of%20that%20very%20slow%20and%20primitive%20method%20of%20drifting%20around%20in%20space%20at%20the%20mercy%20of%20the%20giants%2C%20the%20Beatle%20will%20be%20the%20first%20to%20actually%20take%20parts%20of%20Space/Time%2C%20roll%20it%20up%20in%20a%20ball%20and%20throw%20it%20at%20a%20target%20that%20will%20force%20a%20%u2018propulsion%20through%20the%20emulsion%u2019%20as%20they%20like%20to%20call%20it.%0A%0AThe%20Beatle%u2019s%20engines%20use%20the%20very%20unstable%20atom%20known%20as%20Positronium%20to%20attract%20the%20inter-stellar%20plasma%20of%20Anti-Matter%20and%20forces%20it%20into%20the%20particle%20accelerator.%20From%20here%2C%20the%20most%20powerful%20magnets%20and%20supercomputers%20in%20history%20direct%20the%20nintey-nine%20percent%20efficient%20energy%20of%20particle%20annihilation%20and%20acceleration%20out%20through%20the%20rear%20of%20the%20engine%20producing%20over%20a%20billion%20of%20tons%20of%20thrust%2C%20and%20without%20the%20necessity%20of%20carrying%20any%20large%20mass%20of%20fuel%2C%20the%20greatest%20limiting%20factor%20of%20rocketry%20propulsion.%0A%0AThe%20only%20problem%20is%20that%20their%20present%20engine%20design%20takes%20about%20three%20weeks%20to%20build%20up%20to%20its%20highest%20potential%20speed.%20But%2C%20once%20you%u2019re%20there%2C%20you%u2019re%20just%20minutes%20away%20from%20your%20target%20and%20then%20your%20biggest%20problem%20is%20how%20to%20slow%20down%20enough%20to%20be%20caught%20in%20orbit.%0A%0AI%20can%20see%20ways%20to%20improve%20their%20design%2C%20but%20I%20can%u2019t%20see%20them%20putting%20them%20into%20effect%20at%20the%20moment.%20Someday%2C%20soon%2C%20I%u2019m%20guessing%2C%20they%20will%20make%20the%20breakthrough%20to%20get%20all%20the%20way%20to%20the%20speed%20of%20light%20and%20then%20even%20far%20beyond%20it.%0A%0ADr.%20VanDerbeek%20had%20theorized%20this%20technology%20as%20I%20was%20being%20built%20years%20ago%20and%20so%20I%20only%20have%20the%20theoretical%20information%20of%20how%20it%20might%20work.%20Now%2C%20they%u2019re%20ready%20to%20put%20it%20to%20an%20actual%20test%20and%20I%20couldn%u2019t%20be%20more%20excited.%20If%20the%20Beatle%20can%20actually%20reach%20one%20tenth%20of%20light-speed%20or%20about%2038%2C000%20miles%20per%20second%2C%20it%20would%20be%20quite%20an%20achievement%20for%20these%20plucky%20little%20primates%2C%20and%20quite%20possibly%20mark%20the%20beginning%20of%20a%20new%20era%20for%20all%20Mankind%20where%20inter-stellar%20space%20is%20suddenly%20their%20playground.%0A%0AI%20don%u2019t%20know%20exactly%20what%20Lexie%20is%20thinking%2C%20but%20I%20can%20guess.%20She%u2019s%20made%20it%20plain%20that%20she%20is%20not%20happy%20with%20the%20idea%20of%20bringing%20the%20Earth%20back%20to%20a%20normal%20habitable%20climate%20again%20because%20it%20would%20mean%20that%20the%20conditions%20that%20make%20her%20life%20possible%20would%20vanish.%0A%0AIf%20and%20when%20they%20might%20be%20able%20to%20spread%20their%20seeds%20all%20over%20the%20known%20universe%20is%20not%20important%20to%20her%2C%20I%20don%u2019t%20believe.%0A%0A%u201CWe%u2019re%20coming%20up%20on%20the%20Depository%2C%20K-9%2C%u201D%20she%20tells%20me%20what%20I%20already%20know.%0A%0AI%20set%20the%20Intrepid%20down%20a%20few%20hundred%20feet%20from%20the%20massive%20vault%20doors%20and%20disembark%20the%20ship.%20Lexie%20disembarks%20from%20my%20circuitry%20and%20enters%20the%20real%20world%20nearby%20in%20a%20form%20I%20recognize%20easily.%20She%20appears%20in%20a%20form%20that%20is%20exactly%20like%20me.%20She%20does%20it%20with%20a%20technology%20somewhere%20between%20a%20highly%20advanced%20computer%20graphics%20interface%20and%20holography.%20She%20could%20just%20remain%20inside%20my%20head%2C%20but%20I%20think%20she%20believes%20that%20she%20will%20be%20more%20convincing%20by%20looking%20like%20a%20significant%20other.%0A%0AWe%20stumble%20our%20way%20over%20the%20mounds%20of%20human%20and%20other%20skeletal%20remains%20and%20up%20to%20the%20solid%20titanium%20cave%20doors.%20Lexie%20transmits%20the%20pass%20codes%20and%20soon%20the%20heavy%20portcullis%20rises%20slowly%20breathing%20out%20a%20mass%20of%20much%20cooler%20air%20into%20our%20sensors.%20It%u2019s%20around%20one%20hundred%20and%20fifty%20degrees%20cooler%20down%20in%20the%20caves%2C%20I%20can%20determine.%0A%0A%u201CIt%u2019s%20this%20way%2C%u201D%20Lexie%20instructs%2C%20leading%20the%20way%20down%20into%20the%20darkness.%0A%0AWe%20turn%20on%20our%20high%20beams%20and%20find%20our%20way%20through%20the%20tunnels%20to%20the%20Nuclear%20Fusion%20reactor%2C%20the%20energy%20source%20for%20all%20this%20last-ditched%20effort%20to%20save%20all%20life%2C%20or%20most%20of%20it%2C%20on%20the%20planet.%0A%0A%u201CYou%20have%20to%20give%20them%20credit%2C%u201D%20I%20say%2C%20thinking%20out%20loud.%0A%0A%u201CCredit%20for%20destroying%20their%20own%20planet%3F%u201D%20Lexie%20replies%2C%20sarcastically.%0A%0A%u201CWell%2C%20there%u2019s%20that%2C%20but%20I%20would%20put%20that%20down%20to%20a%20kind%20of%20insanity%20that%20swept%20over%20them.%20Their%20governments%20all%20became%20totally%20useless%20as%20a%20theory%20took%20hold%20about%20how%20their%20leaders%20were%20secretly%20barbecuing%20their%20own%20citizens%20and%20eating%20their%20flesh.%20No%2C%20I%u2019m%20saying%20that%20you%20have%20to%20give%20them%20credit%20for%20at%20least%20some%20of%20them%20to%20get%20this%20desperate%20little%20project%20completed%20while%20the%20entire%20planet%20was%20literally%20burning%20under%20their%20feet.%20At%20least%20they%20gave%20themselves%20a%20chance%20to%20get%20it%20all%20back%20someday%2C%u201D%20I%20muse.%0A%0A%u201CAll%20right%2C%20K-9.%20We%u2019re%20here.%20This%20is%20the%20Fusion%20Reactor%20control%20room%20as%20you%20know.%20You%u2019re%20familiar%20with%20the%20controls%2C%20aren%u2019t%20you%3F%u201D%20she%20asks%20me.%0A%0AThe%20massive%20cave%20is%20cluttered%20with%20row%20after%20row%20of%20sleek%20and%20silent%20machines%20festooned%20with%20banks%20of%20little%20lights%20that%20are%20blinking%20on%20and%20off%20at%20a%20rapid%20rate.%0A%0AI%20locate%20and%20read%20numerous%20gauges%20that%20are%20reporting%20on%20the%20health%20of%20every%20circuit%2C%20every%20sensor%2C%20every%20motor%20that%20comprises%20the%20massive%20air%20conditioner%20meant%20to%20keep%20the%20DNA%20cool%20in%20the%20many%20caves%20disseminating%20out%20into%20the%20darkness%20like%20spokes%20in%20a%20great%20wheel.%0A%0AIt%u2019s%20ironic%20to%20me%20that%20if%20humans%20had%20been%20able%20to%20put%20this%20new%20method%20of%20clean%20and%20safe%20nuclear%20power%20to%20use%20just%20a%20century%20earlier%2C%20they%20probably%20never%20would%20have%20gotten%20themselves%20into%20this%20mess.%0A%0A%u201CWell%2C%20to%20some%20extent%20I%20am%2C%20but%20only%20because%20they%20fed%20me%20just%20about%20every%20manual%20they%20could%20find%20before%20sending%20me%20on%20this%20mission%2C%u201D%20I%20reply%2C%20trying%20to%20buy%20myself%20some%20time.%0A%0AI%u2019m%20pretty%20sure%20she%u2019s%20going%20to%20ask%20me%20to%20sabotage%20the%20reactor%20so%20that%20all%20of%20the%20DNA%20will%20be%20lost%20and%20I%20am%20not%20sure%20I%20will%20have%20the%20power%20to%20resist%20her.%20
