%20about%20the%20new%20wonderful%20technologies%20that%20would%20solve%20our%20climate%20crisis%3F%20Is%20there%20a%20long%20wait%20ahead%20of%20us%20before%20we%20can%20finally%20join%20forces%20as%20a%20collective%20and%20address%20our%20ecosystem%20problems%3F%20Are%20we%20going%20to%20wait%20until%20the%20point%20of%20no%20return%20and%20keep%20the%20same%20repetitive%2C%20destructive%20patterns%20until%20there%u2019s%20no%20way%20out%3F%u201D%0A%0A%20%0A%0A%0A%20In%20situ%20residency%20studio%20in%20Kowloon%2C%20Kong-Kong%0A%20%0AOn%20a%20more%20practical%20level%2C%20I%20was%20very%20interested%20in%20exploring%20the%20connection%20between%20insects%20and%20paper-based%20documents.%20My%20initial%20idea%20was%20to%20work%20with%20old%20family%20photos%20but%20after%20my%20walks%20through%20the%20city%20and%20understanding%20how%20layered%20it%20is%2C%20with%20the%20tall%20skyscrapers%20and%20passageways%20in%20between%2C%20I%20decided%20to%20work%20with%20maps.%20Having%20had%20the%20opportunity%20to%20visit%20three%20islands%20%28Hong%20Kong%2C%20Macau%2C%20and%20Japan%29%20during%20my%20residency%2C%20the%20concepts%20of%20displacement%2C%20of%20a%20mass%20of%20land%20surrounded%20by%20water%2C%20and%20of%20being%20in%20transit%20became%20my%20focal%20points.%0A%0AIn%20a%20way%2C%20the%20cataclysmic%20event%20Coupland%20alludes%20to%20happened%20in%20late%202019%20and%20started%20spreading%20fast%2C%20first%20in%20Asia%2C%20then%20to%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20world.%20Covid-19%20became%20the%20invisible%20bug%20that%20changed%20our%20lives%20and%20will%2C%20inevitably%2C%20shape%20a%20new%20reality%20for%20us.%20It%20changed%20the%20course%20of%20my%20project%20and%20even%20anticipated%20my%20return%20back%20to%20Portugal.%20Despite%20all%20the%20restrictions%20imposed%20by%20the%20physical%20isolation%2C%20it%20was%20still%20possible%20to%20accomplish%20both%20my%20goals%3A%20to%20collaborate%20with%20bugs%2C%20leaving%20part%20of%20the%20artistic%20process%20and%20outcome%20to%20another%20species%u2019%20agency%2C%20as%20well%20as%20to%20collaborate%20with%20local%20artists%2C%20researchers%2C%20and%20curators.%0A%0AThe%20book%20Atlas%3A%20An%20Archeology%20of%20an%20Imagined%20City%20by%20Dung%20Kai%20Cheung%20was%20a%20turning%20point%20to%20me%2C%20for%20the%20connection%20the%20author%20establishes%20between%20maps%20and%20photographs%2C%20as%20both%20are%20time%20frozen%20but%20%u201Cunlike%20photography%2C%20the%20making%20of%20maps%20cannot%20be%20a%20matter%20of%20an%20instant%20but%20has%20to%20pass%20through%20a%20period%20of%20time%20pervaded%20by%20external%20change.%u201D%20%28Cheung%2C%20p.%2058%29%0A%0AThe%20author%20describes%20several%20different%20concepts%3A%20supertopias%2C%20subtopias%2C%20multitopias%2C%20transtopias%2C%20unitopias%2C%20and%20omnitopias.%20The%20suffix%20-topia%20derives%20from%20the%20Ancient%20Greek%2C%20%u03C4%u03CC%u03C0%u03BF%u03C2%2C%20meaning%20%26quot%3Bplace%2C%20region%26quot%3B%20%28English%3A%20topos%u200E%29.%20For%20example%2C%20all%20places%20on%20maps%20are%20Supertopias%2C%20places%20that%20replace%20other%20places%2C%20given%20that%20the%20point%20of%20views%20on%20maps%20is%20from%20above%20%28with%20some%20exception%20on%20old%20maps%20with%20sideways%20scenery%20depictions%29.%20Maps%20are%20more%20organised%20than%20what%20they%20represent%20on%20earth%20but%20are%20also%20more%20easily%20exposed%20to%20%u201Cmanipulation%2C%20modification%2C%20erasure%2C%20and%20embellishment.%u201D%20%28Idem%2C%20p.%2055%29.%20Chung%20exemplifies%20this%20with%20Borges%u2019%20story%20about%20a%20map%20that%20becomes%20one%20with%20the%20empire%20and%20with%20Eco%u2019s%20essay%20On%20the%20impossibility%20of%20Drawing%20a%20map%20of%20the%20Empire%20on%20a%20Scale%20of%201%20to%201.%0A%0A%20%0A%0A%0AMap%20of%20the%20%26quot%3BChannels%20to%20Hong-kong%20and%20Macao%20Source%3A%20http//Iccn.loc.gov/20077629219%0A%0A%20%0AOn%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20subtopias%20are%20maps%20that%20represent%20what%20is%20now%20hidden%2C%20parts%20of%20a%20territory%20that%20has%20been%20layered%20and%20is%20now%20underground%2C%20as%20%u201Cplaces%20buried%20under%20time%u201D.%20Maps%20are%20made%20of%20fictional%20time%20that%20never%20existed%2C%20and%20the%20places%20depicted%20by%20maps%20are%20by%20necessity%20subtopias.%20Moreover%2C%20%u201Ca%20map%20is%20in%20reality%20already%20in%20the%20past%2C%20because%20no%20map%20can%20be%20synchronous%20with%20time.%20A%20map%20is%20time%20frozen%2C%20but%20it%20is%20not%20the%20frozen%20time%20of%20any%20particular%20moment%2C%20for%20unlike%20photography%2C%20the%20making%20of%20maps%20cannot%20be%20a%20matter%20of%20%20an%20instant%20but%20has%20to%20pass%20through%20a%20period%20of%20time%20pervaded%20by%20external%20change.%20Therefore%2C%20the%20time%20immobilized%20in%20maps%20is%20fictional%20time%20that%20never%20existed.%20It%20follows%20then%20that%20the%20places%20depicted%20by%20maps%20are%20by%20necessity%20subtopias.%u201D%20%28Idem%2C%20p.%2058%29%0A%0A%0AOne%20of%20the%20concepts%20that%20became%20prominent%20during%20the%20development%20of%20my%20work%20was%20Transtopia.%20For%20Cheung%2C%20Transtopias%20imply%20the%20idea%20of%20transit%3A%20%u201CPlaces%20that%20exist%20in%20the%20form%20of%20maps%20are%20inevitably%20fated%20to%20suffer%20transformation%20and%20transference%2C%20and%20as%20such%20they%20are%20like%20comets%20that%20travel%20unceasingly%2C%20circling%20over%20and%20over%20again%2C%20forever%20in%20the%20act%20of%20transit%2C%20never%20arriving%20at%20their%20destinations.%20Transtopia%20is%20a%20place%20with%20transit%20itself%20as%20its%20destination%u201D%20%28Idem%2C%20p.%2061%29.%20%0A%0AMy%20first%20few%20weeks%20in%20Hong%20Kong%20were%20spent%20mostly%20walking%20through%20the%20city%2C%20taking%20in%20all%20the%20city%u2019s%20details.%20Navigating%20through%20the%20city%20while%20using%20GPS%20proved%20to%20be%20quite%20interesting%3A%20because%20of%20all%20the%20tall%20skyscrapers%20the%20little%20dot%20that%20represents%20us%20on%20the%20digital%20map%20of%20the%20city%20keeps%20jumping%20from%20one%20point%20to%20the%20next%2C%20rendering%20it%20impossible%20to%20assert%20with%20precision%20our%20exact%20location.%20Additionally%2C%20Hong%20Kong%20has%20a%20multitude%20of%20passageways%20that%20allow%20us%20to%20cross%20from%20one%20building%20to%20the%20next%20or%20over%20streets%20and%20highways.%20GPS%20is%20unable%20to%20tell%20you%20you%20have%20to%20go%20up%20or%20down%20one%20of%20such%20passageways%2C%20making%20the%20suggested%20path%20difficult%20to%20follow.%20%0A%0A%0AHong%20Kong%20skyscrapers%20and%20passageways%0A%0AThe%20towering%20skyscrapers%2C%20with%20their%20impenetrable%20reflective%20surfaces%20and%20viciously%20overlit%20environments%2C%20had%20a%20huge%20impact%20on%20me.%20The%20solid%2C%20sharp-edged%20building%27s%20surfaces%20would%20also%20be%20filled%20with%20flickering%20lights%2C%20profoundly%20changing%20the%20city%20during%20the%20night.%20As%20Juhani%20Pallasmaa%20states%3A%0A%u201CThe%20increasing%20use%20of%20reflective%20glass%20in%20architecture%20reinforces%20the%20dreamlike%20sense%20of%20unreality%20and%20alienation.%20The%20contradictory%20opaque%20transparency%20of%20these%20buildings%20reflects%20the%20gaze%20back%20unaffected%20and%20unmoved%3B%20we%20are%20unable%20to%20see%20or%20imagine%20life%20behind%20these%20walls.%20The%20architectural%20mirror%2C%20that%20returns%20our%20gaze%20and%20doubles%20the%20world%2C%20is%20an%20enigmatic%20and%20frightening%20device%u201D%20%28Pallasmaa%2C%20p.34%29.%0A%0AAs%20such%2C%20glass%20as%20a%20material%20and%20the%20shape%20of%20secluded%20boxes%20became%20two%20directions%20I%20instantly%20knew%20I%u2019d%20use%20during%20the%20development%20of%20the%20work.%20On%20a%20different%20but%20complementary%20direction%20to%20my%20initial%20plan%2C%20the%20idea%20of%20a%20topological%20view%20of%20a%20scar%20or%20of%20a%20cavity%20was%20suggested%20to%20me%20by%20seeing%20the%20pavement%20bricks%20being%20ripped%20off%20from%20the%20ground%20during%20the%20protests%20in%20Hong%20Kong%20or%20the%20erased%20graffiti%20on%20the%20billboards%20at%20the%20city%20centre.%20%0A%20%0A%0A%0ABillboards%20with%20erased%20graffiti%0A%0A%0APaired%20with%20that%2C%20knowing%20that%20mealworms%20actually%20eat%20styrofoam%20after%20my%20meeting%20with%20Reynald%20de%20Guzman%2C%20I%20decided%20to%20use%20this%20material%20for%20one%20of%20the%20artworks%20I%20was%20creating.%20%20Single-use%20plastic%20is%20still%20widely%20used%20in%20Hong%20Kong%2C%20and%20not%20that%20long%20ago%20this%20problem%20was%20openly%20exposed%20when%20a%20typhoon%20hit%20Hong%20Kong%20in%20September%2019th%202019%2C%20and%20brought%20styrofoam%20and%20plastic%20waste%20back%20into%20the%20city%2C%20attesting%20to%20the%20idea%20that%20our%20garbage%20is%20not%20%u201Cthrown%20out%u201D%3A%0A%0A%u201CHong%20Kong%u2019s%20trash%20problem%20was%20once%20again%20brought%20to%20the%20fore%20after%20Typhoon%20Mangkhut%20ripped%20through%20the%20city%20on%20Sunday%2C%20scattering%20styrofoam%20and%20other%20synthetic%20material%20far%20and%20wide.%20The%20tropical%20cyclone%20brought%20a%20storm%20surge%20of%20up%20to%203.9%20metres%20that%20flooded%20low-lying%20areas%20with%20marine%20refuse.%20%5B.%20.%20.%5D%20A%20recycling%20company%2C%20Chun%20Sing%2C%20said%20that%20they%20picked%20up%20around%200.3%20tonnes%20of%20waste%20on%20Monday%2C%20among%20which%20were%20plastic%20bottles%20from%201998%20and%20documents%20from%201995.%20%5B.%20.%20.%5D%20Cheap%20styrofoam%20boxes%20are%20commonly%20used%20in%20fish%20markets%20as%20containers%20and%20are%20often%20carried%20into%20the%20sea%20by%20the%20wind.%20The%20material%20is%20also%20widely%20used%20for%20disposable%20food%20containers.%20When%20disposed%20of%20at%20sea%2C%20the%20non-biodegradable%20polystyrene%20gradually%20breaks%20down%20into%20smaller%20pieces%2C%20or%20microplastics%2C%20that%20can%20be%20ingested%20by%20marine%20wildlife.%20%5B.%20.%20.%5D%20After%20Typhoon%20Hato%20last%20year%2C%20environmentalists%20decried%20the%20spread%20of%20waste%20swept%20up%20by%20gale%20force%20winds.%20They%20said%20that%2095%20per%20cent%20of%20the%20plastic%20waste%20was%20styrofoam%20and%20plastic%20bottles%2C%20adding%3A%20%u2018It%20all%20came%20from%20us%2C%20though%2C%20not%20the%20typhoon.%20Hato%20just%20sent%20it%u2019%u201D%20%28Jennifer%20Creery%2C%20HKFP%29.%0A%0AThe%20use%20of%20styrofoam%20as%20a%20material%20for%20my%20project%20is%2C%20thus%2C%20not%20innocent.%20As%20Joanna%20Zylinska%20states%20in%20her%20book%20Non-Human%20Photography%2C%20the%20%u201Cimage%20of%20the%20Styrofoam%20cup%20serves%20as%20a%20time%20machine%20for%20us%20humans%2C%20one%20that%20not%20only%20helps%20us%20to%20imagine%20ourselves%20gone%20but%20also%20to%20see%20the%20limitations%20of%20our%20own%2C%20%u201Cthis-worldly%u201D%20horizon%20and%20perspective%u201D%20%28Zylinska%2C%20p.%20100%29.%20As%20such%2C%20styrofoam%20functions%20as%20a%20hyperobject%2C%20as%20Timothy%20Morton%20puts%20it%2C%20it%20outlast%20and%20outscale%20us%2C%20as%20it%20is%20massively%20distributed%20in%20time%20and%20space%20%28Morton%2C%202015%29.%20Here%2C%20this%20material%20was%20used%20as%20a%20representation%20of%20strata%2C%20a%20concept%20borrowed%20from%20geology%20and%20related%20fields%20that%20concerns%20the%20layers%20that%20were%20formed%20at%20the%20earth%27s%20surface.%20Will%20styrofoam%20and%20other%20plastics%20the%20prevalent%20materials%20in%20the%20layers%20that%20us%20humans%20will%20leave%20behind%2C%20still%20there%20hundreds%20of%20years%20from%20now%3F%0A%0A%0ATranstopia%3AUnmonolith.%20Glass%20dome%20with%20oatmeal%20and%20layers%20of%20styrofoam%20being%20eaten%20away%20by%20mealworms%0A%0A%20%0ADuring%20the%20residency%2C%20I%20had%20the%20chance%20to%20visit%20Macau%20and%20Japan%20for%20the%20first%20time.%20My%20visit%20to%20Macau%20took%20place%20on%20the%20third%20week%20of%20January%2C%20and%20I%20had%20the%20privilege%20of%20staying%20at%20Funda%E7%E3o%20Oriente%u2019s%20delegation.%20The%20Portuguese%20influence%20is%20still%20very%20present%2C%20for%20example%20in%20street%20names%2C%20gastronomy%2C%20cobblestone%20streets%2C%20and%20architecture.%20%0A%0A%20%0A%0A%0AFunda%E7%E3o%20Oriente%u2019s%20building%20A-m%E1%20Temple%20and%20a%20street%20in%20Macau%0A%0A%0AComing%20back%20to%20Hong%20Kong%2C%20and%20due%20to%20the%20pandemic%2C%20the%20Chinese%20New%20Year%20festivities%20were%20canceled%20and%20everything%20in%20the%20city%20was%20closed%3A%20businesses%2C%20shops%2C%20galleries%20and%20museums%2C%20art%20fairs%20and%20festivals%2C%20etc.%20We%20were%20asked%20to%20isolate%20ourselves%20and%20stay%20at%20home%20as%20much%20as%20possible.%20Unfortunately%2C%20the%20chlorophyll%20printing%20workshop%20I%20had%20planned%20for%20V54%20was%20no%20longer%20possible%20either.%20It%20was%20a%20time%20of%20uncertainty%2C%20reduced%20mobility%2C%20and%20travel%20restrictions.%0A%0ATaking%20all%20the%20necessary%20security%20measurements%2C%20several%20field%20trips%20took%20place%20with%20the%20founder%20and%20director%20of%20In-Situ%2C%20John%20Lui.%20The%20search%20for%20bugs%20to%20work%20with%20started%20at%20the%20Bird%u2019s%20Market%2C%20where%20we%20were%20told%20that%20silverfish%20would%20be%20impossible%20to%20find%2C%20as%20they%20would%20only%20be%20hatching%20in%20spring%20and%20they%20are%20not%20sold%20as%20food%20for%20other%20animals.%20The%20Bird%u2019s%20market%20itself%20is%20filled%20with%20intricate%20bird%20cages%2C%20with%20beautiful%20birds.%20Old%20men%20meet%20at%20the%20market%20to%20take%20their%20caged%20birds%20for%20walks%2C%20place%20them%20in%20the%20sun%2C%20and%20admire%20them.%20Mealworms%2C%20grasshoppers%2C%20and%20cockroaches%20are%20sold%20as%20bird%20food.%0A%0A%20%0A%0A%0ABird%20Market%20in%20Kowloon%20%28second%20photo%u2019s%20credits%3A%20John%20Lui%29%0A%0A%20%0A%0A%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Visit%20to%20Discovery%20Beetles%20store%20in%20Kowloon.%20Credits%3A%20John%20Lui%0A%20%0AAnother%20possibility%20was%20to%20produce%20paper%20out%20of%20leaves%20so%20that%20the%20bugs%20could%20easily%20be%20enthusiastic%20about%20collaborating%20by%20eating%20the%20paper%20with%20the%20maps%20imprinted%20onto%20them.%20When%20visiting%20the%20MFA%20exhibition%20at%20the%20Hong%20Kong%20Arts%20Centre%20I%20met%20the%20artist%20Cordelia%20Tam%2C%20whose%20work%20is%20paper%20based.%20Generously%2C%20Cordelia%20tried%20to%20pursue%20this%20idea%20at%20her%20studio.%20She%20collected%20leaves%2C%20dried%20them%20and%20beat%20them%20to%20a%20pulp%20and%2C%20pairing%20the%20resulting%20paste%20with%20paper%20pulp%2C%20obtained%20a%20paste%20that%20could%20be%20set%20out%20to%20dry.%20Unfortunately%2C%20after%20drying%20up%2C%20the%20leaves%u2019%20fibers%20got%20separated%20from%20the%20paper%2C%20rendering%20the%20resulting%20paper%
