Pan%20Am%20or%20the%20Batten%20Kill%3F


Here%20is%20another%20favorite%20from%202019%20and%20the%20story%20I%20wrote%20on%20FB%20at%20the%20time%3A%0A%0AAnyway%2C%20one%20of%20New%20England%27s%20smaller%20and%20more%20obscure%20operations%20is%20the%20Milford%20and%20Bennington%20Railroad.%20%20It%20is%20a%20one%20locomotive%20and%20one%20customer%20operation.%20%20So%20that%20was%20my%20goal%20but%20I%20also%20had%20hopes%20of%20catching%20one%20of%20the%20equally%20obscure%20branchline%20locals%20in%20New%20England.%20%20In%20fact%2C%20the%20two%20actually%20overlap%20for%20a%20few%20miles%20so%20it%20is%20possible%20to%20see%20them%20both%20in%20the%20same%20day%2C%20if%20a%20bit%20improbable.%0A%0APan%20Am%27s%20Hillsboro%20Branch%20is%20one%20of%20the%20last%20old%20Boston%20%26amp%3B%20Maine%20branchlines%20of%20any%20consequence%20still%20in%20service%20in%20New%20England.%20%20B%26amp%3BM%20once%20had%20a%20spiders%20web%20of%20branches%20blanketing%20the%20north%20shore%20of%20the%20Boston%20metro%20area%2C%20southern%20Maine%2C%20and%20nearly%20all%20of%20the%20Granite%20State.%20%20Abandonments%20began%20in%20the%201930s%20and%20accelerated%20in%20the%201970s%20and%20then%20virtually%20all%20were%20pruned%20in%20the%20early%20Guilford%20era.%20%20A%20few%20stubs%20lasted%20into%20the%2021st%20century%20but%20two%20decades%20in%20really%20the%20only%20ones%20I%20can%20think%20of%20are%3A%0A%0A1%29%20The%20Heywood%20Branch%20out%20of%20Gardner%2C%20that%20once%20went%20to%20Winchendon%20but%20is%20now%20just%20a%20short%20stub%20-%20I%20have%20yet%20to%20shoot%20this%0A%0A2%29%20The%20Greenville%20Branch%20out%20of%20Ayer%2C%20that%20once%20reached%20to%20its%20namesake%20in%20southern%20NH%20but%20now%20only%20is%20in%20service%20a%20mile%20or%20so%20within%20Ayer%20and%20exists%20OOS%20for%2010%20miles%20to%20Townsend%20-%20I%20have%20yet%20to%20shoot%20this%0A%0A3%29%20The%20short%20Lowell%20Hill%20Branch%20in%20Lawrence%20that%20I%27ve%20featured%20here%20before%0A%0A4%29%20The%20branch%20to%20Rouselet%20in%20Peabody%20served%20by%20BO-1%20that%20I%27ve%20featured%20here%20that%20comprises%20bits%20of%20the%20old%20Danvers%20Branch%20and%20South%20Reading%20branches%0A%0AAll%20of%20the%20above%20are%20designated%20Industrial%20Tracks%20in%20the%20modern%20Pan%20Am%20timetable%20making%20the%20Hillsboro%20Branch%20the%20last%20true%20branch%20line.%0A%0AIt%20reaches%2016.38%20miles%20from%20its%20connection%20with%20the%20Northern%20Mainline%20in%20downtown%20Nashua%20just%20north%20of%20the%20yard%20and%20right%20where%20Nashua%20Union%20Station%20once%20stood.%20%20Made%20up%20of%20a%20series%20of%20predecessors%20by%20the%20late%201930s%20it%20was%20no%20longer%20a%20thru%20route%20and%20basically%20was%20a%2040%20mile%20branchline.%20%20B%26amp%3BM%20cropped%20the%208%20miles%20from%20Bennington%20to%20Hillsboro%20in%201979%20but%20continud%20to%20serve%20the%20small%20paper%20mill%20in%20the%20former%20town%20into%20the%20early%20Guilford%20era.%20%20When%20Guilford%20petitioned%20to%20abandon%20the%20line%20beyond%20Wilton%20the%20state%20bought%20the%20remaining%2016%20miles%20and%20to%20this%20day%20it%20is%20intact%20to%20Bennington.%20%20However%2C%20regular%20operations%20extend%20only%20three%20miles%20beyond%20Wilton%20to%20the%20quarry%20in%20South%20Lyndeborough%20and%20the%20M%26amp%3BB%20runs%20very%20rare%20special%20excursions%20%28usually%20once%20a%20year%29%20another%20six%20miles%20to%20Greenfield.%20%20That%27s%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20primer%20on%20the%20route%20and%20a%20lot%20more%20can%20be%20found%20in%20Robert%20M.%20Lindsell%27s%20%26quot%3BThe%20Rail%20Lines%20of%20Northern%20New%20England.%26quot%3B%0A%0AThe%20modern%20day%20Hillsboro%20branch%20is%20a%20tediously%20slow%20piece%20of%20railroad%20with%20a%20MAXIMUM%20speed%20of%205%20MPH%20and%20derailments%20are%20quite%20common.%20%20It%20is%20not%20unsual%20for%20a%2032%20mile%20round%20trip%20to%20serve%20the%20two%20remaining%20customers%20to%20consume%20two%20full%2012%20hr%20work%20days%20for%20the%20Nashua%20based%20local%20crews%20NA-1%20and%20NA-2.%20%20It%20is%20that%20fact%20that%20made%20these%20shots%20possible%20and%20allowed%20me%20to%20check%20off%20another%20rare%20and%20long%20sought%20after%20piece%20of%20New%20England%20railroading.%20%20NA-2%20had%20reportedly%20made%20the%20trip%20west%20but%20tied%20up%20for%20the%20night%20in%20Milford%20at%20their%20main%20customer%27s%20siding%20%28Hendrix%20Wire%29.%20%20I%20was%20fortunate%20to%20have%20a%20friend%20from%20Nova%20Scotia%20who%20has%20family%20in%20the%20area%20staying%20there%20who%20could%20provide%20intel.%20%20So%20I%20invited%20another%20friend%20to%20make%20the%20long%20drive%20from%20the%20south%20shore%20area%20and%20we%20decided%20to%20give%20it%20a%20shot.%20%0A%0AI%20left%20work%20around%200630%20and%20drove%20straight%20to%20Nashua.%20%20After%20a%20good%20breakfast%20in%20a%20local%20diner%20beside%20the%20tracks%20we%20consolidated%20vehicles%20and%20drove%20west%20following%20the%20line.%20%20When%20we%20got%20to%20Milford%20we%20found%20the%20M%26amp%3BB%20tied%20down%20at%20Granite%20State%20Concrete%20with%20no%20sign%20of%20life%20but%20then%20were%20pleased%20to%20find%20a%20Guilford%20gray%20GP40%20parked%20at%20Hendrix%20just%20like%20we%27d%20been%20told.%20%20But%20it%20was%20shut%20down%20and%20and%20cold%20so%20we%20were%20a%20bit%20nervous%20when%20we%20arrived%20around%200830.%20%20A%20friend%20told%20us%20that%20NA-1%27s%20crew%20was%20on%20duty%20in%20Nashua%20at%200900%20and%20we%20should%20see%20them%20by%200945%20or%20so.%20%2010%20AM%20came%20and%20went%20and%20we%20started%20to%20worry%20that%20Pan%20AM%20may%20have%20diverted%20them%20to%20other%20duties%2C%20but%20finally%20about%201015%20a%20van%20showed%20up.%20%20%20When%20the%20engine%20turned%20over%20then%20died%20twice%20we%20really%20were%20thinking%20we%20were%20in%20for%20a%20disappointment%2C%20but%20finally%20it%20stayed%20running.%20%20The%20crew%20had%20no%20switching%20to%20do%20so%20their%20only%20chore%20was%20to%20tote%20their%20one%20car%20west%20to%20Wilton%2C%20run%20around%2C%20and%20start%20the%20slow%20journey%20back%20east%20%28timetable%20south%29.%20%20The%20outer%20four%20miles%20of%20this%20branch%20are%20by%20far%20the%20most%20scenic%20and%20feature%20a%20nice%20bridge%20over%20the%20Souhegan%20River%20a%20couple%20old%20B%26amp%3BM%20depots%20for%20props%2C%20and%20some%20bucolic%20southern%20New%20Hampshire%20scenery.%20%20THIS%20is%20where%20you%20want%20to%20catch%20the%20train%2C%20since%20the%20eastern%2011%20miles%20are%20arrow%20straight%20and%20rather%20boring%20passing%20strip%20malls%20and%20small%20industrial%20parks.%20%0A%0AWe%20chased%20him%20west%20from%20Hendrix%2C%20watched%20him%20run%20around%20then%20started%20east.%20%20After%20getting%20a%20nice%20shot%20crossing%20the%20deck%20bridge%20in%20Wilton%20I%20looked%20down%20and%20noticed%20I%27d%20lost%20my%20wide%20angle%20lense%20somewhere%20along%20the%20way....that%20quickly%20put%20a%20damper%20on%20things.%20%20My%20friends%20were%20gracious%20enough%20to%20help%20me%20look%20and%20even%20drive%20back%20to%20Wilton%20retracing%20our%20steps.%20%20Having%20no%20luck%20there%20we%20came%20back%20to%20the%20bridge%20and%20trudged%20down%20the%20bank%20again%2C%20where%20one%20of%20them%20found%20it%20in%20the%20leaves%20an%20brush.%20%20Thanks%20Vincent%21%20%20%20After%20a%20big%20sigh%20of%20relief%20we%20headed%20east%20and%20in%20more%20good%20fortune%20the%20PAR%20crew%20had%20stopped%20for%20a%20snack%20behind%20the%20Cumberland%20Farms%20at%20the%20Wilton-Milford%20line%20affording%20us%20plenty%20of%20time%20to%20get%20down%20to%20the%20Granite%20State%20plant%20and%20set%20up%20for%20views%20of%20them%20passing%20the%20M%26amp%3BB.%20%20There%20we%20were%20pleasantly%20surprised%20to%20find%20the%20M%26amp%3BB%27s%20little%20SW-9%20fired%20up%20and%20running%20as%20they%20slowly%20unloaded%20the%20prior%20day%27s%20stone%20train.%20%20We%20got%20our%20shots%20of%20NA-1%20then%20followed%20east%20to%20Milford%20to%20capture%20the%20images%20of%20him%20passing%20the%20old%20B%26amp%3BM%20boxcar%20and%20the%20depots.%0A%0AAfter%20the%20shots%20in%20Milford%20we%20headed%20back%20to%20Granite%20State%20and%20were%20a%20bit%20disappointed%20%20to%20find%20the%20M%26amp%3BB%20still%20there%20with%20the%20loco%20shut%20down.%20%20It%20wasn%27t%20to%20be%20a%20two%20railroad%20chase%20this%20day.%20%20%20But%20I%20had%20nothing%20to%20complain%20about.%20So%20we%20turned%20around%20and%20went%20east%20for%20one%20more%20shot%20of%20NA-1%20at%20the%20busy%20Route%20101%20crossing%20before%20calling%20it%20quits.%20I%20was%20quite%20happy%20to%20have%20gotten%20the%20arguably%20rarer%20and%20harder%20to%20catch%20of%20the%20two%20options.%0A%0AAfter%20that%20it%20was%20time%20for%20a%20celebratory%20lunch%20at%20the%20Red%20Arrow%20Diner%2C%20then%20drop%20off%20Caleb%20who%20was%20one%20for%20the%20day%20before%20Vincent%20and%20I%20started%20back%20to%20Nashua.%20%20Despite%20a%20leisurely%20lunch%20and%20driving%20back%20and%20forth%20to%20drop%20off%20cars.%20%20Amazingly%20after%20doing%20all%20that%20we%20still%20showed%20up%20in%20Nashua%20before%20NA-1%20did%20and%20we%20set%20up%20for%20some%20last%20shots%20of%20him%20exiting%20the%20branch%20on%20to%20the%20mainline%20to%20go%20tie%20up%20Nashua%20yard.%0A%0AWhile%20slow%20can%20be%20tedious%20and%20annoying%2C%20it%20sure%20does%20work%20in%20your%20favor%20sometimes.%20%20Anyway%2C%20%20now%20you%20know%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20story%20%28not%20like%20you%20cared%21%29%20%0A%0AThe%20Hillsboro%20Branch%20reminds%20me%20of%20the%20Batten%20Kill.%20%20Anyone%20else%20see%20the%20resemblance%3F%20%20For%20comparison%3A%20%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//flic.kr/p/2ip43em%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Eflic.kr/p/2ip43em%3C/a%3E%0A%0ANA-1%20works%20slowwwllly%20east%20%28railroad%20south%29%20approaching%20the%20Granite%20State
