A%20HOCKEY%20STORY%0AWhere%20to%20begin.%20I%20guess%20playing%20hockey%20for%20a%20boy%20in%20Canada%20is%20or%20at%20least%20was%20in%20the%201950s%20that%20I%20was%20a%20boy%20in%2C%20a%20pretty%20common%20thing.%20After%20all%2C%20in%20Canada%2C%20hockey%20is%20the%20National%20Game.%20As%20such%20hockey%20and%20hockey%20news%20filled%20the%20radio%20air%20waves%20and%20then%20television%20sets%20of%20the%20day%20as%20well%20as%20the%20newspapers%20here%20in%20Toronto.%20The%20two%20big%20Toronto%20papers%20the%20Star%20and%20the%20Telegram%20gave%20much%20of%20their%20space%20to%20hockey%20coverage.%20Today%2C%20I%20wonder%20how%20many%20boys%20would%20know%20who%20is%20leading%20the%20scoring%20race%20or%20which%20team%20is%20leading%20the%20standings%2C%20which%20goalie%20has%20the%20best%20per%20goal%20average%20and%20so%20on.%20Of%20course%20then%2C%20in%20the%20fifties%20there%20were%20only%20six%20National%20Hockey%20League%20teams%2C%20The%20Original%20Six%20which%20consisted%20of%2C%20The%20Toronto%20Maple%20Leafs%2C%20The%20Montreal%20Canadiens%2C%20The%20New%20York%20Rangers%2C%20The%20Boston%20Bruins%2C%20The%20Chicago%20Black%20Hawks%20and%20the%20Detroit%20Red%20Wings.%20Today%2C%20I%20believe%20there%20are%20thirty%20such%20teams%2C%20franchises%20is%20how%20they%20are%20referred%20to.%20Without%20a%20doubt%20the%20league%20is%20a%20watered%20down%20version%20of%20what%20I%20was%20exposed%20to%20as%20a%20boy%20growing%20up%20in%20Toronto.%20I%20recall%20watching%20the%20Leafs%20games%20as%20a%20boy%20living%20on%20hard%20scrabble%20Victoria%20Boulevard%20a%20street%20that%20if%20observed%20carefully%20is%20located%20between%20the%20two%20line%20east%20west%20railroad%20corridor%20and%20a%20flood%20plain.%20In%20fact%20the%20area%20was%20flooded%20seriously%20in%201954%20by%20Hurricane%20Hazel.%20%0AWhen%20I%20first%20began%20to%20watch%20the%20Leaf%20team%20in%20the%20mid%2050%u2019s%20they%20weren%u2019t%20%20doing%20very%20well.%20One%20year%20it%20was%20during%20their%20last%20game%20of%20the%20season%2C%20if%20they%20won%20they%20would%20get%20into%20the%20playoffs.%20They%20were%20playing%20against%20the%20Boston%20Bruins%2C%20I%u2019d%20have%20to%20check%20to%20see%20when%20that%20was%2C%20mid%20to%20late%20fifties%2C%20anyways%2C%20Alex%20and%20I%20were%20allowed%20to%20watch%20the%20games%20even%20though%20they%20lasted%20past%20our%20usual%20bed%20time%20of%20nine%20o%u2019clock.%20That%20night%2C%20I%20recall%20there%20were%20about%20two%20minutes%20left%20in%20the%20game%2C%20a%20win%20by%20the%20Leafs%20would%20insure%20them%20a%20playoff%20spot%2C%20they%20were%20behind%20a%20goal%20when%20one%20of%20their%20players%20tied%20it%20up.%20Al%20and%20I%20were%20down%20on%20the%20floor%20praying%20Hail%20Marys%20and%20Our%20Fathers%20for%20another%20goal%20to%20be%20scored%20in%20the%20final%20minute%20and%20a%20half.%20A%20goal%20was%20scored%20and%20this%20was%20the%20beginning%20of%20a%20Maple%20Leaf%20dynasty%20that%20would%20in%20the%20ensuing%20years%20win%20numerous%20Stanley%20Cups.%20I%20am%20a%20lucky%20lad%20to%20have%20been%20living%20during%20that%20dynasty%20and%20following%20hockey.%20%0ASometimes%2C%20gramps%20Gregory%20would%20babysit%20us%20when%20mom%20and%20dad%20would%20go%20out.%20One%20time%20they%20went%20to%20see%20%20the%20stage%20performance%20of%20Camelot%20at%20the%20Okeefe%20Centre%20starring%20a%20Canadian%20singer%20Robert%20Goulet%20along%20with%20the%20lead%20female%20singer%20Julie%20Andrews%20and%20Richard%20Burton.%20This%20was%20in%20October%201960.%20Mom%20spent%20the%20afternoon%20as%20I%20recall%20cleaning%20the%20shiny%20blue%201958%20Chevrolet%20Biscayne%20that%20dad%20drove%2C%20he%20had%20gotten%20it%20from%20a%20big%20downtown%20Toronto%20car%20dealership%20called%20Gorries.%20Every%20weekend%20when%20that%20car%20was%20home%20mom%20would%20go%20out%20to%20the%20street%20where%20it%20was%20parked%20in%20front%20of%20the%20Ainsworths%20house.%20She%20carried%20a%20whisk%20and%20a%20bucket%20of%20warm%20soapy%20water%2C%20and%20a%20spray%20bottle%20with%20vinegar%20and%20water%20to%20clean%20the%20smoke%20stained%20windows%20of%20the%20four%20door%20plain%20jane%20car.%20Dad%20smoked%2C%20so%20did%20mom.%20Most%20of%20the%20time%20he%20smoked%20Sweet%20Caporals%20or%20Buckinghams%20and%20mom%20liked%20the%20Players%20Plain%20brand.%20Daisy%20and%20Jim%20the%20Neighbours%20across%20the%20street%20who%20made%20their%20own%20beer%20would%20say%20hi%20to%20Gisele%20as%20she%20cleaned%20away%2C%20Florence%20aka%20Flo%20mother%20of%20Gary%20Jefferson%20would%20say%20hello%20as%20well.%20After%20mid%20day%20a%20truck%20would%20drive%20up%20the%20street%20with%20the%20words%20Beer%20Store%20written%20on%20it%20and%20he%u2019d%20bring%20your%20order%20to%20the%20door.%20Once%20in%20a%20while%20mom%20and%20dad%20would%20have%20a%20case%20of%20beer%20dropped%20off%2C%20for%20some%20reason%20they%20drank%20a%20beer%20popular%20in%20Quebec%20called%20Dow.%20The%20companies%20advertising%20slogan%20was%2C%20%u201Cwouldn%u2019t%20you%20rather%20have%20a%20Dow%20Now%u201D.%20There%20were%20times%20when%20our%20cellar%20was%20stacked%20from%20floor%20to%20ceiling%20with%20cases%20of%20hard%20liquor%20and%20wine%20that%20belonged%20to%20the%20C.U.P.E.%20Local%2079%20that%20dad%20was%20the%20president%20of.%20His%20day%20job%20was%20as%20a%20tax%20accessor%20for%20the%20City%20of%20Toronto.%20It%20was%20the%20union%20position%20that%20got%20them%20the%20tickets%20for%20the%20Camelot%20show%20and%20gosh%20darn%2C%20it%20may%20have%20been%20seats%20for%20the%20world%20premiere%20as%20a%20man%20in%20his%20position%20was%20always%20being%20given%20seats%20to%20one%20thing%20or%20another.%20The%20Union%20was%20a%20stronger%20force%20in%20Canada%20in%20those%20days%2C%20in%20fact%20I%20am%20told%20my%20dad%20negotiated%20the%20first%20contract%20for%20nurses.%20When%20the%20Queen%20came%20to%20visit%20Toronto%20my%20mom%20and%20dad%20sat%20in%20the%20brightly%20bannered%20Dignitaries%20section%20at%20City%20Hall.%20A%20few%20years%20back%20I%20visited%20the%20Toronto%20Archives%20but%20could%20not%20locate%20images%20of%20this%20time%20in%20their%20lives%2C%20though%20I%20had%20seen%20the%20pictures%20at%20our%20house%20many%20years%20ago.%20.%20%0AGramps%20would%20take%20the%20bus%20to%20our%20house%2C%20he%20didn%u2019t%20live%20to%20far%20away%20at%2036%20Webb%20Avenue%20by%20Runnymede%20Road%20and%20Annette%20Street.%20He%20would%20have%20gotten%20on%20the%20Annette%20bus%20that%20would%20have%20taken%20him%20to%20the%20Loop%20across%20from%20smelly%20Swifts%20Meat%20Packers%20where%20Keele%20Street%20turned%20into%20Weston%20Road.%20From%20the%20Loop%20gramps%20would%20take%20the%20dark%20red%20and%20dull%20yellow%20Weston%20Road%20trolley%20bus%20to%20our%20street.%20I%20remember%20the%20route%20quite%20well%20as%20I%20spent%20many%20weekends%20at%20their%20house%20and%20I%20am%20surprised%20that%20at%207%20and%208%20I%20was%20allowed%20to%20take%20the%20bus%20on%20my%20own%20as%20long%20as%20I%20didn%u2019t%20talk%20to%20anyone.%20At%20gramps%20and%20grandmas%20place%20I%20was%20treated%20well.%20On%20most%20Saturday%20mornings%20grandma%20would%20write%20a%20few%20things%20on%20a%20slip%20of%20paper%20and%20roll%20a%20five%20dollar%20bill%20into%20the%20note%20then%20place%20them%20in%20a%20small%20change%20purse%20then%20place%20that%20in%20my%20zippered%20jacket%20pocket%2C%20tell%20me%20a%20few%20times%20not%20to%20lose%20it%20and%20to%20bring%20home%20the%20change.%20There%20was%20a%20group%20of%20shops%20at%20the%20corner%20of%20Annette%20and%20Runnymede%2C%20one%20was%20a%20small%20butcher%20shop%20and%20groceteria%20and%20those%20Saturdays%20I%20would%20pick%20up%20a%20half%20dozen%20of%20those%20nice%20German%20wieners%2C%20the%20ones%20with%20the%20skin%20on%20them%20that%20crunched%20and%20crackled%20when%20you%20bit%20into%20them%2C%20of%20course%20I%20could%20pick%20out%20a%20five%20cent%20chocolate%20bar%20as%20well%20and%20whatever%20else%20was%20on%20granndmas%20list%2C%20all%20to%20be%20placed%20in%20a%20string%20like%20bag%20to%20be%20carried%20the%20two%20or%20three%20blocks%20back%20to%20their%20house.%0A%20Webb%20Avenue%20was%20a%20much%20quieter%20street%20and%20neighbourhood%20than%20ours%2C%20it%20bordered%20on%20High%20Park%20%20though%20it%20was%20the%20upper%20end%20of%20the%20area.%20It%20was%20a%20long%20walk%20down%20Runnymede%20Road%20to%20get%20to%20either%20the%20Runnymede%20show%20or%20the%20Odeon%20Humber%20theatre%20both%20located%20on%20busy%2C%20trendy%20Bloor%20Street.%20Every%20Saturday%20that%20I%20was%20visiting%20I%20would%20be%20given%20show%20money%20and%20some%20spending%20money%20and%20told%20with%20the%20wave%20of%20a%20finger%20more%20than%20once%20by%20my%20grandmother%2C%20%u201Cand%20whatever%20you%20do%20Charlie%2C%20don%u2019t%20go%20to%20the%20bathroom%20in%20the%20theatre%2C%20go%20now%20before%20you%20go%20out.%u201D%20%20I%20was%20many%20years%20in%20figuring%20out%20what%20that%20was%20all%20about.%20Must%20have%20been%20the%20Catholic%20in%20them%2C%20their%20inability%20to%20say%20it%20correctly%20which%20would%20have%20been%20like%20this%2C%20%u201Cdon%u2019t%20go%20to%20the%20bathroom%20cause%20some%20pervert%20pedophile%20might%20grab%20you%20by%20your%20little%20dinky%u201D%20oh%20no%2C%20they%20had%20to%20hide%20the%20fact%20that%20such%20people%20existed.%20And%20I%20don%u2019t%20know%20why%20I%20was%20so%20many%20years%20in%20figuring%20out%20what%20they%20might%20be%20doing%20from%20time%20to%20time%20while%20I%20was%20at%20the%20show%21%0A%20Nanny%20Gregorys%20day%20was%20filled%20with%20cleaning%20house%2C%20cleaning%20up%20after%20her%20cocker%20Spaniel%20Laddy%20who%20would%20take%20a%20widdle%20on%20the%20front%20mat%20when%20anyone%20came%20to%20the%20door.%20At%2011%20in%20the%20morning%20the%20wrestling%20came%20on%20which%20seemed%20to%20be%20her%20favourite%20show.%20She%20wasn%u2019t%20quietly%20sitting%20there%20watching%20the%20likes%20of%20Whipper%20Billy%20Watson%2C%20Sweet%20Daddy%20Siki%2C%20The%20Masked%20Marauder%20and%20others%20hurl%20each%20other%20across%20the%20ring%2C%20she%u2019d%20be%20all%20excited%20and%20enthralled%20at%20what%20was%20happening%20on%20the%20black%20and%20white%20TV%20set.%20I%20wasn%u2019t%20into%20wrestling%2C%20least%20not%20TV%20wrestling%20cause%20we%20had%20heard%20rumours%20it%20was%20all%20fake%2C%20and%20I%20wasn%u2019t%20into%20fake%20sports.%20But%20she%u2019d%20make%20me%20watch%20it%20with%20her.%20Around%20mid%20day%20on%20Saturdays%2C%20Gramps%20would%20put%20on%20some%20green%20chinos%20and%20a%20tan%20work%20shirt%20with%20pockets%20and%20a%20bunch%20of%20pens%20and%20pencils%20in%20one%20of%20the%20pockets%2C%20men%20did%20that%20back%20then%2C%20then%20he%u2019d%20head%20south%20on%20Runnymede%20towards%20an%20area%20called%20Baby%20Point%2C%20pronounced%20Bobby%20Point%20to%20do%20some%20gardening%20at%20rich%20peoples%20houses%20down%20that%20way.%20It%20was%20a%20way%20to%20make%20a%20little%20spare%20money.%20His%20job%20at%20the%20Domtar%20wood%20plant%20was%20steady%2C%20and%20I%20heard%20he%20was%20a%20floor%20supervisor%20of%20sorts%20and%20well%20respected.%20They%20had%20a%20nice%20garden%20at%20%20home%20with%20trellises%2C%20I%20liked%20it%20till%20I%20found%20out%20they%20had%20a%20bunch%20of%20their%20dead%20dogs%20and%20cats%20buried%20back%20there%2C%20oh%20well%2C%20that%20was%20the%20way%20back%20then%2C%20there%20were%20no%20fancy%20dog%20and%20cat%20crematoriums%20or%20Pet%20Cemeteries%20in%20them%20days%2C%20well%20if%20there%20were%20we%20didn%u2019t%20know%20about%20them.%0A%20%20The%20year%201958%20saw%20the%20release%20of%20the%20film%20The%20Seven%20Wonders%20of%20Sinbad%20and%20I%u2019m%20telling%20you%20I%20must%20have%20saw%20that%20show%20six%20times%20that%20summer.%20It%20was%20kind%20of%20corny%2C%20as%20this%20guy%20wearing%20a%20knife%20in%20a%20leather%20sheath%20tied%20to%20his%20waist%20on%20top%20of%20his%20skirt%20while%20wearing%20sandals%20and%20a%20head%20scarf%20was%20to%20kill%20this%20creature%20with%20one%20eye%20who%20was%20three%20times%20his%20size.%20%20Apparently%20sex%20education%20wasn%u2019t%20exactly%20in%20the%20forefront%20in%20those%20days.%20Kids%20were%20supposed%20to%20find%20these%20things%20out%2C%20in%20time.%20When%20I%20saw%20my%20first%20killer%20set%20of%20breasts%20looming%20inside%20the%20crisp%20white%20pressed%20blouse%20of%20my%20grade%20five%20teacher%20Miss%20Mulligan%20I%20almost%20shit%20my%20pants%2C%20%20I%20couldn%u2019t%20believe%20what%20I%20was%20looking%20at%20and%20at%20ten%20years%20old%20they%20sure%20looked%20good%21%20Now%2C%20who%20was%20I%20to%20tell%20about%20that%20sighting%2C%20%20I%20wouldn%u2019t%20have%20seen%20them%20at%20all%20if%20I%20hadn%u2019t%20been%20sitting%20in%20the%20front%20desk%20and%20the%20teacher%20bent%20over%20right%20in%20front%20of%20me.%20If%20I%20went%20home%20and%20asked%20my%20dad%20at%20supper%20time%20why%20them%20things%20looked%20so%20darn%20nice%20to%20me%2C%20he%20would%u2019ve%20smacked%20me%20across%20the%20room%2C%20I%20knew%20better%20than%20to%20ask%20him.%20From%20then%20on%2C%20there%20wasn%u2019t%20a%20safe%20National%20Geographic%20magazine%20in%20the%20world%20as%20that%20was%20the%20only%20place%20you%20could%20actually%20look%20at%20a%20breast%20as%20characterized%20on%20a%20neanderthal%20indigenous%20woman%20tending%20the%20crops%20or%20the%20fire%20or%20breast%20feeding%20her%20child%20prior%20to%20the%20colonials%20coming%20over%20and%20changing%20things.%0A%0AWhen%20gramps%20looked%20after%20us%20it%20was%20like%20a%20party%20in%20a%20way.%20Not%20that%20we%20got%20out%20of%20hand%20or%20anything%2C%20it%20was%20just%2C%20well%2C%20someone%20different%2C%20like%20a%20supply%20teacher%2C%20the%20rules%20changed%20a%20bit%2C%20not%20much%20but%20a%20wee%20bit.%20For%20example%20while%20watching%20the%20Leafs%20game%2C%20it%20didn%u2019t%20start%20until%208%3A30%20when%20Foster%20Hewitt%20would%20interrupt%20his%20live%20broadcast%20from%20Maple%20Leaf%20Gardens%20and%20say%2C%20%u201Cif%20you%20are%20just%20tuning%20in%20the%20game%20between%20the%20Chicago%20Black%20Hawks%20%28for%20example%29%20is%20tied%201-1%20after%20a%20period%20and%20a%20half%20of%20play.%20You%20see%2C%20we%20didn%u2019t%20get%20to%20see%20the%20entire%20game%20back%20then%20on%20TV%2C%20it%20cut%20in%20half%20way%20through.%20Next%20thing%20you%20know%20the%20second%20period%20intermission%20is%20on%20and%20gramps%20would%20go%20into%20the%20kitchen%20and%20boil%20some%20Canada%20Packers%20brand%20Maple%20Leaf%20%20wieners%2C%20two%20for%20each%20of%20us%20on%20real%20buns%20with%20%20mustard%20for%20me%20and%20relish%20and%20ketchup%20for%20Alex%20and%20gramps%21%20There%u2019d%20be%20a%20glass%20of%20pop%20poured%20from%20an%20economy%20size%20glass%20bottle%20of%20Wishing%20Well%20grape%20flavoured%20pop%20or%20orange%20which%20was%20popular%20as%20well.%20For%20some%20reason%20this%20was%20like%20going%20to%20heaven%20having%20a%20snack%20like%20that%20during%20a%20hockey%20game.%20The%20game%20itself%20was%20secondary.%20Other%20times%20gramps%20would%20make%20us%20salmon%20sandwiches%20on%20fresh%20rye%20bread%20that%20he%20brought%20from%20his%20neighbourhood%2C%20you%20could%20get%20great%20rye%20bread%20in%20Toronto%2C%20they%20tell%20me%20the%20water%20is%20better%20in%20Toronto%20to%20make%20bread.%20I%20remember%20the%20bread%20being%20smaller%20than%20todays%20rye%2C%20I%20mean%20real%20Jewish%20style%20Silversteins%20rye%20bread.%20A%20couple%20of%20those%20filled%20with%20fork%20squished%20sockeye%20salmon%20in%20a%20tin%20was%20big%20time.%20Around%201960%20gramps%20was%20over%20more%20often%20as%20dad%20had%20union%20work%20to%20do%20and%20that%20meant%20attending%20dances%20and%20benefits%20with%20mom%2C%20they%20were%20happy%20going%20out%20on%20Saturday%20nights.%0AMaple%20Leaf%20Gardens%20on%20Carlton%20Street%20was%20to%20hockey%20what%20Bethlehem%20was%20to%20Jesus.%20Technically%20not%20the%20birthplace%20of%20hockey%2C%20but%20for%20sure%20the%20place%20most%20prominent%20in%20the%20minds%20of%20many%20Canadian%20boys%2C%20equal%20to%20the%20Montreal%20Forum.%20Can%20you%20imagine%20a%20bank%20or%20a%20mining%20company%20back%20then%20buying%20the%20naming%20rights%20to%20the%20rink.%20Oh%2C%20no%2C%20I%20am%20pretty%20sure%20it%20was%20Maple%20Leaf%20Gardens%20from%20the%20very%20beginning%20to%20the%20end.%20Alex%20and%20I%20were%20given%20tickets%20from%20my%20dad%20to%20go%20to%20a%20game%20on%20a%20Saturday%20night.%20I%20remember%20like%20it%20was%20yesterday.%20Alex%20and%20I%20both%20had%20these%20same%20matching%20winter%20jackets%2C%20our%20Sunday%20jackets%2C%20sort%20of%20like%20overcoats%2C%20I%20think%20car%20coats%20is%20how%20they%20would%20be%20categorized%20today.%20We%20would%20both%20have%20had%20Sids%20Barbershop%20brush%20cuts.%20Around%206%20o%u2019clock%20we%20walked%20up%20to%20get%20the%20Weston%20Road%20bus%20to%20the%20Loop%20across%20from%20Swifts%20then%20hop%20on%20the%20Keele%20bus%20down%20to%20Bloor%20Street%2C%20at%20Bloor%20hop%20on%20the%20eastbound%20subway%20to%20Yonge%20Street%20and%20at%20Yonge%20Street%20take%20the%20north%20south%20subway%20south%20to%20Carlton.%20The%20arena%20was%20only%20a%20block%20away%20from%20the%20subway%20station.%20We%20got%20to%20the%20busy%20entrance%20and%20when%20Alex%20went%20into%20his%20jackets%20inner%20pocket%20he%20discovered%20he%20did%20not%20have%20the%20tickets.%20We%20didn%u2019t%20panic%2C%20in%20fact%20the%20ticket%20guy%20called%20a%20supervisor%20over%20who%20took%20us%20in%20and%20had%20us%20wait%20while%20he%20phoned%20home%20and%20he%20found%20out%20that%20the%20tickets%20were%20at%20home%20and%20he%20gave%20us%20other%20passes%20for%20our%20seats%20which%20were%20greens%2C%20our%20seats%20were%20halfway%20up%20the%20centre%20of%20the%20big%20rink%20across%20from%20the%20team%20boxes%20but%20above%20the%20penalty%20boxes.%20The%20stands%20were%20filling%20up%20fast%2C%20the%20Garden%20held%20over%20twelve%20thousand%20people%2C%20it%20was%20our%20first%20time%20inside%20the%20arena%20and%20when%20the%20players%20swarmed%20the%20ice%20for%20their%20short%20warm%20up%20and%20the%20lights%20went%20on%2C%20the%20bright%20lights%20it%20was%20like%20being%20in%20daylight.%20%0AChicago%20was%20the%20opposing%20team%2C%20in%20those%20days%20their%20team%20had%20some%20very%20recognizable%20players%2C%20the%20likes%20of%20Bobby%20Hull%20known%20as%20the%20Golden%20Jet%2C%20in%20goal%20was%20the%20legendary%20Glen%20Hall%2C%20on%20defence%20there%20was%20Pierre%20Pilote%2C%20one%20of%20the%20wingers%20was%20high%20scoring%20Stan%20Makita%2C%20Moose%20Vasco%20played%20defence%20and%20he%20did%20look%20like%20a%20moose%20as%20he%20was%20built%20like%20a%20chunk%20of%206%20by%206%20lumber%2C%20also%20on%20the%20roster%20there%20were%20some%20other%20stalwart%20players%2C%20Eric%20Nesterenko%2C%20Dollard%20St%20Laurent%2C%20Al%20Arbour%2C%20Ron%20Chico%20Maki%2C%20Tod%20Sloan%20and%20Ed%20Litzenberger.%20Then%20to%20great%20applause%20the%20home%20team%20Leafs%20piled%20onto%20the%20ice%2C%20we%20knew%20almost%20every%20player%20by%20name%2C%20there%20was%20Johnny%20Bower%20in%20goal%2C%20Dave%20Keon%2C%20George%20Armstrong%2C%20Frank%20Mahovlich%2C%20Allen%20Stanley%2C%20Carl%20Brewer%2C%20Bert%20Olmstead%2C%20Red%20Kelly%2C%20Dick%20Duff%2C%20Bob%20Baun%2C%20Larry%20Hillman%2C%20Eddie%20Shack%2C%20Bob%20Nevin%2C%20Tim%20Horton%2C%20Bob%20Pulford%20and%20more%21%20The%20organ%20let%20out%20a%20mighty%20duh%20duh%20duh%20duhhhhh%20and%20someone%20spoke%20from%20speakers%20that%20were%20everywhere%2C%20%u201CLets%20all%20stand%20to%20sing%20the%20National%20Anthem%u201D%2C%20the%20lights%20were%20dimmed%2C%20each%20team%20lined%20up%20and%20faced%20the%20flags%20of%20Canada%20and%20the%20United%20States%2C%20%20first%20the%20American%20anthem%20was%20sung%20then%20Oh%20Canada%20and%20as%20I%20looked%20around%2C%20almost%20everyone%20was%20either%20singing%20or%20lip%20syncing%20the%20words.%20%0AIt%20was%20a%20tightly%20fought%20game%2C%20the%20two%20stars%20of%20the%20show%20were%20Mahovlich%20for%20the%20Leafs%20and%20Hull%20for%20the%20Black%20Hawks.%20When%20each%20player%20was%20on%20the%20ice%20there%20was%20an%20electricity%20in%20the%20building%20as%20each%20man%20was%20capable%20of%20awe%20inspiring%20end%20to%20end%20rushes%2C%20each%20had%20wicked%20slap%20shots%2C%20each%20were%20leading%20scorers%20in%20the%20league.%20After%20two%20periods%20the%20game%20was%20tied%20two%20all.%20During%20the%20intermission%20I%20went%20into%20the%20concessions%20area%2C%20looking%20for%20a%20bathroom.%20I%20watched%20as%20man%20after%20man%20after%20man%20entered%20the%20mens%20room%20and%20stood%20side%20by%20side%20urinating%20into%20a%20white%20enameled%20trough%20that%20had%20to%20be%20fifty%20feet%20long%2C%20I%u2019d%20seen%20galvanized%20troughs%20that%20summer%20at%20the%20Canadian%20National%20Exhibition%2C%20in%20what%20we%20called%20The%20Horse%20Building%2C%20it%20was%20really%20called%20The%20Coliseum.%20%20This%20giant%20urinal%20self%20flushed%20every%20few%20minutes%2C%20then%20everyone%20would%20go%20over%20to%20the%20taps%20and%20rinse%20their%20hands%20and%20dry%20them%20on%20a%20linen%20cloth%20that%20came%20out%20of%20a%20white%20semi%20automatic%20dispenser%2C%20I%20could%20hardly%20reach%20the%20towel%20dispenser%20that%20%20I%20was%20using.%20I%20sniffed%20around%20the%20snack%20bars%20where%20even%20then%20the%20price%20of%20things%20was%20far%20more%20than%20what%20it%20was%20at%20other%20places.%20Hot%20Dogs%20on%20a%20bun%20were%20%242%20each%2C%20a%20bag%20of%20peanuts%20was%20also%20%242%2C%20a%20lot%20for%20a%20small%20paper%20bag%20of%20nuts%2C%20cola%20and%20root%20beer%20were%20also%20%242%20each.%20Al%20and%20I%20had%20spent%20our%20money%20during%20the%20first%20intermission%20on%20popcorn.%20All%20we%20had%20left%20were%20a%20few%20pennies%20and%20they%20did%20not%20buy%20you%20anything%2C%20well%2C%20maybe%20a%20gum%20if%20you%20could%20find%20a%20one%20cent%20gum%20machine.%20%0AThe%20third%20period%20was%20full%20of%20rushes%20and%20good%20saves%20by%20the%20goalies%2C%20towards%20the%20end%20of%20the%20period%20the%20Leafs%20went%20up%20by%20one%20goal.%20There%20was%20a%20mighty%20roar%20from%20the%20crowd%20when%20Dick%20Duff%20passed%20to%20George%20Armstrong%20who%20relayed%20the%20pass%20to%20Dave%20Keon%20who%20put%20the%20puck%20in%20the%20upper%20right%20hand%20corner%20of%20a%20sprawled%20Glen%20Hall.%20There%20were%20five%20or%20so%20minutes%20left%20in%20the%20game.%20Alex%20and%20I%20had%20been%20watching%20games%20at%20home%20for%20years%20and%20we%20knew%20that%20on%20the%20other%20side%20of%20the%20ice%20where%20the%20players%20left%20the%20rink%20for%20the%20dressing%20room%20that%20kids%20like%20us%20had%20been%20seen%20on%20TV%20asking%20the%20players%20for%20their%20sticks%20as%20they%20left%20the%20ice.%20It%20was%20difficult%20and%20we%20met%20resistance%20%20in%20the%20form%20of%20young%20rink%20attendants%20who%20told%20us%20to%20stay%20in%20our%20seats%20but%20we%20got%20down%20the%20stairs%20to%20the%20ground%20level%20where%20police%20in%20full%20blue%20uniforms%20and%20peaked%20caps%20and%20Anglo%20Saxon%20accents%20were%20keeping%20an%20eye%20out%20for%20unruly%20people%2C%20they%20let%20us%20pass%20and%20we%20went%20around%20the%20back%20of%20the%20nets%2C%20the%20score%20remained%20the%20same%20and%20when%20the%20buzzer%20sounded%20for%20the%20end%20of%20the%20game%2C%20after%20the%20Leafs%20had%20all%20jumped%20on%20the%20ice%20to%20congratulate%20the%20goalie%20Johnny%20Bower%20on%20the%20victory%20and%20after%20the%20three%20star%20selections%20were%20announced%20we%20were%20there%2C%20we%20were%20right%20there%20in%20the%20aisle%20the%20Leafs%20walked%20by%20and%20as%20each%20player%20walked%20by%2C%20tall%20like%20soldiers%2C%20like%20warriors%20with%20sweat%20beading%20on%20their%20faces%2C%20we%20asked%20them%20for%20a%20stick%2C%20along%20with%20a%20bunch%20of%20other%20like%20minded%20kids%2C%20but%20no%20one%20even%20looked%20at%20us%2C%20they%20just%20walked%20by%20to%20the%20dressing%20room.%20%0AOn%20their%20feet%20were%20these%20fine%20leather%20skates%20sold%20by%20CCM%2C%20they%20were%20called%20Tacks%20short%20for%20Tackaberries%2C%20each%20players%20number%20was%20painted%20on%20the%20side%20of%20the%20boot%20below%20the%20ankle%20protector.%20The%20defencemen%20wore%20black%20ankle%20protectors%20to%20help%20them%20when%20they%20took%20a%20shot%20as%20they%20were%20supposed%20to%20block%20shots.%20For%20sticks%2C%20the%20players%20on%20the%20most%20part%20used%20CCM%20Professionals%20with%20their%20own%20names%20on%20them%20in%20black%20block%20letters.%20You%20knew%20it%20was%20a%20CCM%20from%20the%20letters%20but%20also%20from%20the%20five%20blue%20quarter%20inch%20pieces%20of%20tape%20that%20went%20around%20the%20stick%20a%20foot%20or%20so%20up%20the%20shaft%20from%20the%20heel%20and%20blade.%20Outside%20the%20giant%20arena%20the%20crowd%20seemed%20to%20disperse%20in%20less%20than%20ten%20minutes%20and%20Carlton%20street%20once%20again%20became%20just%20another%20street.%20We%20hopped%20on%20the%20subway%20and%20got%20home%20an%20hour%20later.%20What%20a%20night%21%0AThat%20week%20us%20kids%20on%20Victoria%20Boulevard%20in%20Mount%20Dennis%20held%20our%20own%20game%2C%20right%20in%20front%20of%20the%20house%20at%2026%20Victoria%20Boulevard.%20There%20would%20often%20be%20six%20kids%20per%20team%2C%20Alex%20on%20one%20team%20with%20Kevin%20and%20me%20on%20the%20other%20with%20Shane.%20Guys%20like%20Alan%20and%20Gary%20Wallace%2C%20a%20kid%20named%20Sonny%20Thistle%2C%20%20Dougie%20Wilson%2C%20a%20couple%20of%20the%20Ainsworth%20kids%20Mike%20and%20John%2C%20Bud%20Walford%20would%20chose%20a%20side.%20It%20could%20get%20rough%2C%20especially%20if%20I%20scored%20a%20goal%20on%20Als%20team%2C%20he%u2019d%20come%20after%20me%20with%20his%20hockey%20stick%2C%20just%20swinging%20it.%20Girls%20would%20stand%20by%20the%20sidelines%20and%20chase%20the%20ball%20for%20us%2C%20my%20sister%20Suzanne%20was%20there%2C%20so%20was%20her%20friend%20Jeannie%20Montieth%2C%20they%20pretended%20they%20weren%u2019t%20watching%20between%20turns%20playing%20hop%20scotch%20and%20a%20game%20they%20played%20with%20a%20bunch%20of%20elastics%20called%20yogi%2C%20and%20from%20down%20the%20road%20Ann%20Walford%20would%20watch%2C%20%20Sometimes%20we%u2019d%20play%20for%20hours.%20We%20were%20outside%20a%20lot%20as%20there%20wasn%u2019t%20much%20on%20TV%20in%20those%20days%2C%20well%2C%20we%20only%20got%20one%20channel%20most%20of%20the%20time%20CBC%20until%20my%20folks%20had%20an%20antenna%20put%20in.%20Then%20we%20could%20get%20some%20American%20channels%20and%20Hamilton%20and%20CFTO.%20From%20Buffalo%20we%20could%20pull%20in%20ABC%2C%20CBS%20and%20NBC.%20But%20playing%20ball%20hockey%20on%20the%20street%20was%20a%20great%20way%20to%20burn%20off%20energy.%20Street%20hockey%2C%20ball%20hockey%20was%20great%20cause%20those%20guys%20who%20weren%u2019t%20great%20skaters%2C%20and%20not%20everyone%20was%20could%20play%20street%20hockey%2C%20everyone%20knew%20how%20to%20run.%20The%20only%20gear%20needed%20was%20a%20worn%20out%20stick%20and%20a%20worn%20grey%20tennis%20ball%2C%20goalies%20would%20bring%20their%20baseball%20mitts%2C%20goal%20posts%20were%20just%20two%20pieces%20of%20%20rock%20or%20a%20pair%20of%20gloves%20set%20five%20feet%20apart%2C%20there%20was%20body%20checking%2C%20raises%20were%20not%20counted%20as%20goals.%20When%20the%20street%20lights%20came%20on%2C%20and%20it%20got%20dark%2C%20that%u2019s%20when%20we%20came%20in%2C%20the%20other%20players%20would%20make%20their%20way%20to%20their%20homes%20down%20the%20street.%0AWilfs%20Sports%20was%20located%20in%20Weston%20on%20John%20Street%2C%20a%20block%20in%20from%20Weston%20Road%20the%20main%20street.%20I%20would%20go%20there%20to%20buy%20hockey%20sticks.%20I%20bet%20you%20I%20bought%20a%20hockey%20stick%20every%20week.%20The%20stick%20my%20mom%20bought%20me%20was%20a%20CCM%20Practice%2C%20that%u2019s%20what%20she%20could%20afford%2C%20we%u2019d%20been%20buying%20them%20for%20years%20back%20to%20the%20Our%20Lady%20of%20Victory%20Sunday%20night%20games%20held%20at%20Weston%20arena%20which%20wasn%u2019t%20far%20from%20the%20corner%20of%20Weston%20Road%20and%20Lawrence.%20Alex%20and%20I%20both%20played%20for%20the%20school%20team.%20Dad%20would%20come%20and%20watch%2C%20I%20remember%20he%20wore%20that%20long%20dark%20winter%20wool%20coat%20and%20a%20fedora.%20Well%2C%20dad%20was%20long%20gone%20this%20one%20last%20time%20at%20Wilfs%20sports%20and%20I%20guess%20mom%20was%20struggling%2C%20but%20as%20a%20kid%20that%20word%20does%20not%20exist%20in%20you.%20I%20managed%20to%20get%20two%20bucks%20off%20%20her%20for%20a%20stick%20and%20a%20pair%20of%20bus%20tickets%2C%20kids%20bus%20tickets%20were%20a%20nickel%20each%2C%20they%20were%20sold%20in%20bunches%20of%20five%20for%20a%20quarter%20or%20ten%20for%20fifty%20cents%2C%20if%20you%20didn%u2019t%20have%20a%20ticket%20you%20just%20threw%20five%20cents%20in%20the%20glass%20and%20steel%20ticket%20container.%20The%20bus%20drivers%20could%20always%20make%20change%2C%20they%20carried%20a%20change%20machine%20made%20out%20of%20chrome%20metal%20attached%20to%20their%20belts%20so%20they%20could%20give%20you%20the%20correct%20change%20to%20put%20in%20the%20fare%20box.%20So%20I%u2019m%20down%20in%20the%20basement%20this%20one%20time%20at%20Wilfs%20Sports%20cause%20I%20couldn%u2019t%20find%20the%20stick%20I%20wanted%20on%20the%20main%20floor%20and%20the%20salespeople%20were%20used%20to%20me%20asking%20to%20go%20downstairs%20and%20look%20at%20all%20the%20other%20sticks%2C%20it%20was%20Stick%20Heaven%2C%20they%20had%20thousands%20of%20sticks%20and%20different%20brands%20besides%20the%20CCMs%20they%20had%20Sher%20Wood%20and%20the%20Sher%20Wood%20sticks%20were%20a%20bit%20cheaper%20than%20the%20CCM%20sticks.%20Sher%20Woods%20came%20in%20different%20models%20just%20like%20the%20CCM%20sticks%20did.%20The%20odd%20time%20I%20would%20buy%20a%20Mic%20Mac%20stick%20by%20Sher%20Wood%20it%20was%20a%20bit%20more%20money.%20They%20also%20carried%20North%20Land%20sticks%20and%20Victoriavilles.%20There%20was%20a%20quality%20factor%20at%20play%20as%20well%20as%20a%20loyalty%20factor%20in%20the%20stick%20market.%20The%20more%20you%20paid%20for%20the%20stick%2C%20the%20better%20it%20was%20made%2C%20sticks%20ranged%20in%20price%20from%20seventy%20five%20cents%20for%20a%20junior%20sized%20stick%20all%20the%20way%20to%20six%20dollars%20for%20a%20CCM%20Pro%2C%20I%20didn%u2019t%20know%20anyone%20who%20owned%20a%20CCM%20Custom%20Pro%2C%20anyways%20that%20stick%20was%20heavier%20and%20more%20or%20less%20made%20for%20an%20adult.%20Almost%20every%20time%20I%20would%20go%20home%20with%20the%20lower%20end%20CCM%20Practice%2C%20the%20price%20of%20%241.25%20suited%20our%20family%20budget.%20Choosing%20the%20stick%20was%20a%20painstaking%20process%20of%20holding%20it%2C%20looking%20down%20the%20shaft%20to%20see%20how%20straight%20it%20was%2C%20determining%20if%20the%20markings%20on%20the%20stick%20looked%20good%2C%20sometimes%20a%20stick%20with%20a%20bold%20vein%20would%20brake%20in%20that%20spot%20at%20least%20that%20was%20my%20thinking.%20After%20half%20an%20hour%20I%20finally%20had%20a%20stick%20picked%20out%20for%20the%20upcoming%20week%2C%20come%20to%20think%20of%20it%20I%20must%20have%20been%20playing%20on%20the%20York%20Memorial%20high%20school%20team%20coached%20by%20Jim%20Murchie.%20It%20was%20the%20year%201965.%20Most%20of%20my%20equipment%20was%20hand%20me%20downs%2C%20I%20was%20still%20using%20those%20old%20shoulder%20pads%20made%20out%20of%20fiberglass%20or%20plastic.%20In%20a%20corner%20of%20the%20basement%20of%20Wilfs%20there%20was%20a%20pile%20of%20hockey%20equipment%20and%20in%20that%20pile%20I%20found%20a%20pair%20of%20professional%20hockey%20shoulder%20pads%2C%20the%20kind%20the%20pros%20wore.%20They%20were%20made%20of%20various%20cloths%20and%20leather%20pads%20sewn%20together%20on%20the%20shoulders%20and%20some%20bone%20like%20material%20for%20the%20chest%20protection%20material%20sewn%20under%20the%20stitches%2C%20there%20were%20built%20in%20elbow%20pads%2C%20the%20leather%20was%20that%20soft%20brown%20colour%2C%20they%20weighed%20next%20to%20nothing.%20I%20quickly%20took%20off%20my%20tan%20overcoat%20and%20put%20the%20pads%20on%2C%20it%20was%20getting%20near%20closing%20time%20so%20I%20had%20to%20make%20haste.%20The%20pads%20fit%20perfectly.%20I%20tossed%20on%20my%20over%20coat%20and%20grabbed%20the%20stick%20I%20had%20chosen%20and%20went%20upstairs%20confident%20no%20one%20would%20see%20the%20pads%20under%20my%20jacket.%20There%20was%20a%20small%20line%20up%20at%20the%20cash%20register%20I%20remember%20holding%20my%20chest%20out%20trying%20to%20look%20big.%20The%20red%20faced%20salesman%20with%20a%20brush%20cut%20and%20wide%20smile%20who%20usually%20served%20me%20was%20busy%20selling%20a%20pair%20of%20skates%20to%20a%20young%20family%20and%20their%20son.%20A%20young%20fellow%2C%20a%20part%20time%20employee%20took%20the%20money%20from%20me%20for%20the%20stick%20a%20one%20dollar%20bill%20and%20a%20shiny%20quarter%20totalling%20%241.25%20and%20I%20walked%20out%20of%20the%20store%20into%20the%20fresh%20air%20and%20finally%20let%20my%20breath%20out.%20When%20I%20got%20to%20Weston%20Road%20at%20John%20the%20south%20bound%20bus%20was%20waiting%20for%20me%2C%20it%20was%20almost%20nine%20o%u2019clock%2C%20I%20would%20have%20liked%20to%20go%20in%20The%20Central%20restaurant%20where%20they%20had%20juke%20boxes%20at%20every%20table%20and%20have%20a%20coke%20but%20my%20mom%20would%20be%20worried.%20I%20got%20on%20the%20bus%20and%20got%20out%20at%20Glenvalley%20Drive%2C%20I%20remember%20going%20up%20the%20stairs%20at%20old%20John%20Shuras%20Sunrise%20Pool%20Hall%20and%20looking%20around%20to%20see%20who%20was%20there%20as%20sometimes%20on%20a%20Friday%20night%20a%20group%20would%20get%20together%20to%20play%20pool.%20I%20still%20had%20the%20pads%20on%2C%20no%20one%20said%20anything%2C%20I%20walked%20down%20the%20stairs%20and%20out%20the%20doors%20to%20Weston%20Road%20and%20headed%20home.%20%0AThat%20York%20Memorial%20hockey%20team%20was%20followed%20by%20one%20that%20won%20the%20%20Ontario%20High%20School%20Championship%20the%20following%20year.%20Our%20team%20played%20well%20but%20we%20lost%20in%20the%20finals%20to%20a%20superior%20team.%20The%20first%20playoff%20game%20of%20the%20season%20was%20against%20a%20strong%20Leaside%20High%20School%20team%2C%20it%20was%20a%20game%20of%20sudden%20death%20meaning%20whoever%20won%20would%20go%20to%20the%20next%20series%2C%20the%20finals.%20I%20did%20not%20have%20a%20pivotal%20roll%20on%20the%20team%2C%20I%20was%20happy%20to%20ride%20the%20bench%20and%20let%20the%20better%20skaters%20and%20shooters%20score%20the%20goals.%20If%20I%20got%20out%20once%20a%20period%20or%20twice%20that%20was%20fine%2C%20the%20coach%2C%20Jim%20Murchie%20knew%20who%20he%20had%20to%20put%20on%20the%20ice%20to%20win%20the%20game.%20Remember%20the%20year%20before%20at%20St%20Mikes%20I%20did%20not%20make%20the%20midget%20team.%20Through%20the%20year%20at%20York%20my%20play%20was%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20novelty%20in%20that%20two%20guys%20stoked%20up%20my%20image%20at%20every%20home%20game.%20Harry%20Popowich%20and%20Gord%20Urbanski%20would%20get%20the%20crowd%20chanting%2C%20%u2018We%20Want%20Charlie%2C%20We%20Want%20Charlie%u2019%2C%20hundreds%20of%20fans%20would%20join%20in%20and%20eventually%20Murchie%20had%20to%20put%20me%20on%20the%20ice.%20Steam%20was%20pouring%20from%20the%20scalp%20under%20my%20helmet.%20I%20was%20all%20fired%20up%2C%20it%20was%20only%20five%20minutes%20into%20the%20game%2C%20the%20captain%20of%20the%20Leaside%20team%20came%20flying%20towards%20our%20net%2C%20I%20was%20waiting%20for%20him%20and%20layed%20a%20clean%20shoulder%20check%20into%20him%20that%20landed%20him%20into%20the%20boards.%20The%20game%20was%20stopped%2C%20the%20attendants%20came%20onto%20the%20ice%20with%20a%20stretcher%20and%20we%20later%20heard%20he%20had%20a%20broken%20leg.%20Those%20new%20shoulder%20pads%20had%20done%20their%20job%21%20The%20check%20spurred%20our%20team%20on%2C%20later%20in%20the%20game%2C%20now%20the%20third%20period%20Popowich%20and%20Urbanski%20started%20the%20%u2018We%20Want%20Charlie%20chant%2C%20We%20Want%20Charlie%u2019%2C%20Murch%20let%20me%20on%20the%20ice%2C%20I%20got%20a%20breakaway%2C%20I%20was%20at%20the%20centre%20line%20when%20I%20took%20a%20pass%20and%20was%20crossing%20the%20blue%20line%20the%20opposing%20goalie%20the%20only%20thing%20in%20front%20of%20me%20and%20the%20net.%20I%20went%20to%20shoot%2C%20and%20fanned%20on%20the%20shot%20as%20the%20opposing%20defenceman%20caught%20up%20to%20me.%20We%20won%20the%20game%20in%20any%20case%20three%20to%20two%20but%20lost%20the%20City%20Championship%20the%20following%20game%20to%20a%20stronger%20East%20York%20team.%20I%u2019ll%20never%20forget%20the%20crowd%20chanting%20my%20name%u2026.%20%0A%0AIn%20Memory%20of%20Jimmy%20Lesarge%0A
