I%27ll%20never%20forget%20when%20I%20first%20heard%20about%20the%20movie%20%26quot%3BHigh%20School%20Musical.%26quot%3B%20%20It%20was%20in%20geometry%20class%20my%20freshman%20year%20of%20high%20school.%20%20The%20particular%20class%20I%20was%20in%20was%20mostly%20all%20sophomores%2C%20with%20the%20exception%20of%20myself%20and%20four%20other%20freshmen.%20%20I%20recall%20that%20some%20of%20the%20sophomores%20were%20discussing%20how%20they%27d%20watched%20the%20movie%20premiere%20on%20the%20Disney%20channel%20the%20night%20before.%20%20Apparently%2C%20my%20teacher%20had%20also%20seen%20it%20with%20his%20kids.%20%20He%20was%20joking%20around%2C%20saying%20that%20Gabriella%20looked%20way%20too%20young%20to%20be%20with%20Troy.%20%20He%20also%20said%20Troy%20had%20a%20huge%20ego%20%28or%20something%20along%20those%20lines%29.%20%20I%20thought%20it%20was%20amusing%20that%20my%20older%20classmates%20had%20watched%20something%20on%20the%20Disney%20channel%2C%20that%20was%20clearly%20aimed%20for%20younger%20kids%20%28especially%20when%20playing%20with%20dolls%20at%20the%20time%20would%20have%20been%20considered%20unacceptable%29.%20%20I%20personally%20did%20not%20watch%20the%20movie%2C%20nor%20did%20I%20have%20any%20interest.%20%20The%20word%20%26quot%3Bmusical%26quot%3B%20was%20in%20the%20title%2C%20after%20all...and%20I%20have%20always%20despised%20musicals%20%28they%20make%20me%20very%20uncomfortable%29.%20%20I%20kept%20hearing%20about%20this%20movie%20though%20after%20its%20release.%20%20I%20never%20expected%20that%20it%20would%20become%20a%20cult%20phenomenon%20with%20two%20additional%20sequels%21%0A%0ABy%20the%20time%20I%20graduated%20High%20School%2C%20both%20sequels%20had%20been%20released.%20%20The%20third%20movie%20even%20made%20it%20to%20theaters.%20%20I%20still%20had%20yet%20to%20watch%20a%20single%20one...I%20did%20not%20understand%20all%20the%20hype%20over%20a%20cheesy%20DIsney%20channel%20movie.%20%20Something%20that%20had%20caught%20my%20attention%2C%20however%2C%20were%20some%20of%20the%20dolls%20made%20for%20the%20third%20movie.%20%20At%20that%20point%2C%20I%20was%20%26quot%3Bdone%26quot%3B%20with%20dolls%20altogether.%20%20I%20had%20stopped%20buying%20them%2C%20and%20had%20even%20packed%20up%20all%20my%20pre%20existing%20ones.%20%20My%20love%20for%20dolls%20and%20interest%2C%20however%2C%20had%20never%20truly%20left.%20%20I%20was%20simply%20trying%20to%20conform%20to%20societal%20expectations...teenagers%20were%20not%20%26quot%3Bsupposed%26quot%3B%20to%20play%20with%20dollies.%20%20In%20our%20rural%20area%20in%202007%2C%20a%20huge%20super%20Walmart%20opened.%20%20This%20was%20a%20huge%20deal%20to%20everyone%20in%20the%20area.%20%20The%20opening%20of%20Walmart%20was%20like%20the%20grand%20reveal%20of%20some%20kind%20of%20monument.%20%20Even%20when%20we%20went%20a%20few%20weeks%20later%20to%20see%20the%20new%20store%20for%20ourselves%2C%20it%20was%20still%20jam%20packed.%20%20Finding%20parking%20was%20ridiculous.%20%20Eventually%2C%20while%20Walmart%20was%20still%20busy%2C%20it%20wasn%27t%20insanely%20packed%20anymore.%20%20As%20I%20was%20not%20collecting%20dolls%20at%20that%20time%2C%20I%20had%20no%20reason%20to%20wander%20into%20the%20toy%20section.%20In%20fact%2C%20I%20didn%27t%20set%20foot%20into%20the%20toy%20section%20until%202011%2C%20when%20my%20adult%20doll%20journey%20began.%20%20However%2C%20I%20was%20sorely%20tempted%20to%20have%20a%20gander%20at%20the%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%20%20There%20were%20some%20large%20displays%20of%20the%20prom%20themed%20dolls%20in%20particular%2C%20circa%202008%2C%20on%20the%20endcaps%20of%20the%20aisles.%20%20Every%20time%20we%20were%20in%20Walmart%20with%20Dad%20and%20walked%20by%2C%20I%20slowed%20down%20to%20take%20in%20the%20dolly%20sights.%20%20I%20was%20always%20drawn%20to%20celebrity/movie%20related%20dolls.%20%20I%20didn%27t%20have%20to%20know%20anything%20about%20the%20movie%2C%20characters%2C%20or%20celebs%20to%20want%20to%20purchase%20their%20plastic%20incarnations.%20%20I%20was%20baffled%20by%20the%20realistic%20detail%20and%20their%20similar%20stature%20to%20my%20beloved%20Mary-Kate%20and%20Ashley%20dolls.%0A%0AEven%20after%20several%20more%20years%20passed%2C%20the%20thought%20of%20those%20delightful%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls%20always%20lingered%20in%20the%20back%20of%20mind.%20%20Fast%20forward%20to%202011%2C%20when%20I%20finally%20embarked%20on%20my%20adult%20doll%20collecting%20journey%2C%20I%20once%20again%20had%20the%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls%20thrust%20in%20my%20face.%20%20By%20this%20time%2C%20the%20third%20movie%20had%20been%20out%20several%20years.%20%20Many%20of%20the%20kids%20who%20had%20grown%20up%20with%20the%20High%20School%20Musical%20franchise%20were%20over%20their%20dolls.%20%20Therefore%2C%20they%20were%20EVERYWHERE%21%21%21%20%20It%20was%20a%20constant%20temptation%20when%20we%20went%20secondhand%20shopping%20with%20Dad...there%20were%20so%20many%20times%20I%20desperately%20wanted%20to%20purchase%20a%20HSM%20doll.%20%20In%20those%20days%2C%20I%20was%20far%20more%20selective%20about%20purchasing%20random%20dolls.%20%20I%20was%20trying%20to%20keep%20a%20pruned%2C%20aesthetically%20pleasing%20collection%20%28boy%2C%20that%20didn%27t%20last%20long%29.%20%20I%20couldn%27t%20%26quot%3Bjustify%26quot%3B%20buying%20random%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%20%20But%20there%20was%20also%20a%20part%20of%20me%20that%20knew%20this%20was%20the%20opportune%20moment%20to%20get%20into%20collecting%20them.%20%20Why%3F%20%20They%20were%20at%20that%20age%20where%20they%20were%20new%20enough%20to%20still%20be%20wearing%20their%20original%20outfits%2C%20and%20they%20were%20very%20common%20to%20find.%20%20Despite%20the%20perfect%20circumstances%2C%20I%20didn%27t%20cave%20for%20a%20whole%20other%20year.%0A%0AIt%20was%20early%202012%2C%20if%20I%27m%20not%20mistaken%2C%20when%20I%20decided%20it%20was%20the%20moment%20to%20get%20my%20first%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%20%20I%20can%27t%20remember%20anymore%20if%20it%20was%20right%20after%20Dad%20passed%20away%2C%20or%20before.%20%20Either%20way%2C%20it%20was%20a%20very%20rainy%2C%20dreary%20Sunday%20morning%20at%20the%20local%20flea%20market.%20%20Therefore%2C%20all%20the%20sellers%20who%20were%20usually%20set%20up%20outside%20weren%27t%20there.%20%20Colleen%20and%20I%20opted%20to%20do%20the%20trek%20to%20the%20flea%20market%20anyways....to%20kill%20time.%20%20Inside%20the%20building%2C%20there%20was%20one%20lady%20who%20had%20a%20box%20full%20of%20Barbies.%20%20She%20was%20the%20same%20seller%20I%20got%20my%20very%20first%20secondhand%20Bratz%20from%20the%20year%20before%20%282003%20Slumber%20Party%20Yasmin%20and%202002%20Strut%20It%21%20Meygan%29.%20%20Her%20dolls%20were%20between%20%242%20and%20%243%20each%2C%20which%20seemed%20a%20little%20steep%20to%20me%20at%20the%20time.%20%20But%20they%20were%20always%20fully%20dressed%2C%20and%20fairly%20clean.%20%20We%20spent%20a%20considerable%20amount%20of%20time%20digging%20through%20the%20box%20of%20bagged%20dolls.%20%20It%20was%20there%20I%20found%20my%20High%20School%20Musical%202%20Gabriella%2C%20wearing%20her%20little%20red%20lifeguard%20swimsuit.%20%20She%20had%20the%20most%20beautiful%20face%2C%20adorable%20hairstyle%2C%20and%20clearly%20was%20sporting%20her%20original%20ensemble.%20%20%26quot%3BThis%20is%20it%2C%26quot%3B%20I%20thought%20to%20myself%2C%20%26quot%3BI%20HAVE%20to%20start%20collecting%20the%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%26quot%3B%20%20It%20turns%20out%20the%20seller%20had%20four%20ladies%20altogether.%20%20Besides%20that%20minty%20looking%20Gabriella%2C%20she%20also%20had%20the%20two%20tall%20%26quot%3BSinging%26quot%3B%20dolls%20released%20for%20the%20first%20movie%2C%20and%20of%20course%20a%20High%20School%20Musical%20Sharpay.%20%20What%20I%20remember%20most%20about%20that%20flea%20market%20day%20is%20that%20we%20actually%20double%20backed%20to%20retrieve%20more%20of%20the%20dolls%2C%20once%20I%20realized%20who%20the%20tall%20gals%20were.%20%20I%20had%20gone%20home%20and%20begun%20identifying%20High%20School%20Musical%202%20Sharpay%20and%20Gabriella%2C%20when%20I%20stumbled%20upon%20the%20images%20of%20the%20singing%20ladies.%20%20Ironically%2C%20both%20Gabriella%20dolls%20were%20donning%20their%20original%20attire%2C%20but%20the%20Sharpays%20turned%20out%20to%20be%20in%20the%20incorrect%20clothes.%20%20In%20my%20defense%2C%20the%20My%20Scene%20Juicy%20Bling%20dress%20that%20High%20School%20Musical%20Sharpay%20was%20wearing%20did%20look%20like%20a%20ridiculous%20costume%20she%27d%20come%20in%21%0A%0ASo%20it%20began...my%20collection%20went%20from%200%20dolls%20to%20four%20overnight.%20%20I%20couldn%27t%20be%20more%20happy%20with%20the%20selection.%20%20I%20desperately%20wanted%20guy%20dolls%20for%20my%20High%20School%20Musical%20family.%20%20The%20first%20was%20my%20Tree%20House%20Moment%20Troy%2C%20who%20I%20got%20not%20long%20after%2C%20from%20%26quot%3BMulan%20Lady.%26quot%3B%20%20He%20was%20wearing%20High%20School%20Musical%20clothes...just%20not%20his.%20%20%20Within%20that%20first%20year%2C%20I%20had%20amassed%20many%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%20%20I%20got%20a%20fully%20dressed%20Ryan%2C%20two%20other%20High%20School%20Musical%202%20Sharpays%20%28wearing%20the%20two%20outfits%20she%20was%20sold%20with%29%2C%20Sing%20Together%20Gabriella%2C%20Midsummer%27s%20Night%20Talent%20Show%20Gabby%2C%20Graduation%20Day%20Gabby%2C%20Sing%20Together%20Troy%2C%20%26quot%3BProm%26quot%3B%20Sharpay%2C%20and%20%26quot%3BProm%26quot%3B%20Taylor.%20%20I%20even%20snagged%20the%20East%20High%20School%20playset%20%28shown%20here%29%20for%20ONE%20DOLLAR%21%21%21%20Granted%2C%20it%20was%20gutted%2C%20but%20the%20structure%20itself%20still%20had%20enough%20going%20for%20it%20to%20be%20useful%20for%20photos.%20%20I%20wasn%27t%20kidding%20when%20I%20said%20these%20dolls%20were%20easy%20to%20find--the%20majority%20I%20just%20mentioned%20were%20wearing%20their%20original%20ensembles%2C%20or%20genuine%20High%20School%20Musical%20clothes.%20%20While%20the%20majority%20of%20my%20luck%20was%20concentrated%20in%202012/2013%2C%20it%20didn%27t%20stop%20there.%20%20I%20even%20found%20some%20boxed%20dollies%20within%20the%20next%20few%20years.%20%20Graduation%20Day%20Sharpay%20was%20an%20unexpected%20find%20at%20the%20mall%20in%202014.%20%20She%20was%20in%20a%20novelty%20toy%20store...we%20were%20actually%20on%20the%20hunt%20for%20Harry%20Potter%20figurines%20that%20Colleen%20collects%21%20%20There%20was%20also%20a%20very%20awesome%20Cinderella%20doll%20there%2C%20but%20she%20was%20way%20too%20expensive.%20%20Sharpay%20was%20about%20retail%20price%2C%20so%20I%20thought%20she%20was%20worth%20snagging.%20%20In%202015%2C%20we%20ventured%20out%20to%20an%20old%20indoor%20flea%20market%20in%20a%20mill%20Dad%20used%20to%20take%20us%20to.%20%20The%20seller%20I%20got%20my%20Funk%20%27N%27%20Glow%20Meygan%20from%20years%20before%20had%20three%20%26quot%3Bbasic%26quot%3B%20Senior%20Year%20boys--Troy%2C%20Chad%2C%20and%20Ryan.%20%20What%20a%20steal...they%20were%20all%20inexpensive%20and%20guy%20dolls%21%21%21%20%20They%20were%20probably%20the%20best%20find%20yet%20in%20my%20High%20School%20Musical%20collection.%20%20In%202017%2C%20I%20scored%20another%20High%20School%20Musical%202%20Gabriella%20doll%2C%20still%20sealed%20inside%20her%20original%20box%2C%20albeit%20a%20rather%20crushed%20one.%20%20I%20was%20excited%20to%20have%20a%20better%20swimsuit%20for%20my%20very%20first%20HSM%20doll%20to%20wear%21%20%20Little%20by%20little%2C%20I%20found%20additional%20dolls%20for%20my%20collection%2C%20and%20even%20random%20outfits%20to%20reunite%20with%20the%20ones%20I%20had%20purchased%20without%20them%21%20%20At%20some%20point%2C%20I%20was%20even%20able%20to%20find%20all%20three%20DVDs%20for%20a%20%241%20or%20so%20each%20at%20the%20flea%20market%2C%20and%20I%20finally%20watched%20the%20films.%20%20It%20was%20super%20awesome%20knowing%20the%20context%20of%20the%20dolls%2C%20their%20outfits%2C%20and%20the%20basic%20story%20line.%20%20Honestly%2C%20I%20still%20find%20the%20movies%20cringey%2C%20but%20they%20did%20have%20that%20delightful%20side%20effect%20of%20making%20me%20want%20more%20dollies%21%0A%0AHigh%20School%20Musical%20dolls%20will%20always%20have%20a%20special%20place%20in%20my%20heart.%20%20They%20were%20one%20of%20the%20first%20things%20that%20intrigued%20me%20that%20wasn%27t%20attached%20to%20my%20childhood.%20%20I%20had%20no%20sentiment%20for%20them%20when%20I%20first%20heard%20about%20the%20movies%20in%20high%20school.%20%20But%20I%20knew%20the%20moment%20I%20saw%20the%20dolls%20at%20Walmart%20in%202008%2C%20that%20they%20would%20have%20been%20a%20huge%20hit%20with%20my%20younger%20self.%20%20In%20a%20way%2C%20I%20think%20I%20was%20honoring%2011%20year%20old%20Shelly%27s%20interests%20by%20finally%20collecting%20High%20School%20Musical%20dolls.%20%20I%20would%20have%20been%20giddy%20if%20these%20dolls%20had%20come%20out%20a%20few%20years%20before.%20%20Most%20used%20the%20same%20body%20molds%20as%20Mary-Kate%20and%20Ashley.%20%20I%20would%20have%20loved%20their%20outfits%20and%20accessories...for%20use%20on%20the%20Olsen%20twins%20of%20course.%20%20But%20not%20only%20that%2C%20Gabriella%20was%20even%20more%20attractive%20than%20my%20Mary-Kate%20and%20Ashley%20dolls.%20%20I%20have%20a%20feeling%20she%20would%20have%20stolen%20the%20show%2C%20and%20would%20have%20been%20wearing%20THEIR%20clothes.%20%20To%20this%20day%2C%20my%20favorite%20doll%20in%20my%20collection%20is%20my%20first%20High%20School%20Musical%202%20Gabriella.%20%20There%20is%20something%20I%20find%20just%20as%20magical%20about%20her%2C%20as%20I%20did%20with%20my%20Winning%20London%20Ashley.%20%20I%20can%20even%20tell%20her%20apart%20from%20her%20formerly%20boxed%20counterpart...I%20know%20her%20that%20well.%20%20And%20of%20course%2C%20Tree%20House%20Moment%20Troy%20is%20a%20close%20second.%20%20I%20was%20beside%20myself%20the%20day%20we%20rescued%20him%20in%202012.%20%20The%20idea%20of%20having%20a%20male%20doll%20appropriately%20sized%20for%20Mary-Kate%20and%20Ashley%2C%20was%20hard%20to%20wrap%20my%20head%20around.%20%20Although%20the%20movies%20were%20never%20my%20thing%2C%20the%20dolls%20are%20an%20important%20landmark%20in%20my%20doll%20collecting%20journey.%20They%20bridge%20the%20gap%20between%20the%20past%2C%20what%20could%20have%20been%2C%20and%20where%20I%20am%20now%21
