NEDERLAND%2C%20HOLLAND%2C%20THE%20NETHERLANDS%2CPAYS-BAS%2CHOLANDA%2C%20PAISES%20BAJOS%2C%20PAYS-BAS%2CVoices%20of%20The%20Left%20Behind%2CProject%20Roots%20and%20the%20Canadian%20War%20Children%20of%20Word%20War%20Two%20by%20Olga%20Rains%2C%20Lloyd%20Rains%20and%20Melynda%20Jarratt%2C%0A%0A%0AHIS%20FATHER%27S%20EYES%20by%20Melynda%20Jarrett.-%0A%0AThe%20most%20famous%20Canadian%20war%20child%20is%20legendary%20rock-blues%20guitarist%2C%20Eric%20Clapton%2C%20whose%20father%20was%20a%20Canadian%20soldier%20from%20Montreal%20named%20Edwaard%20Fryer.%0AEric%20Clapton%20was%20born%20on%20March%2030%2C%201945%2C%20to%20Patricia%20Molly%20Clapton%2C%20a%2016%20year%20old%20English%20teenager%20whose%20brief%20relationship%20with%20the%20piano-playing%20soldier%20from%20Quebec%20resulted%20in%20pregnancy.%0ARaised%20by%20his%20grandparents%2C%20Eric%20was%20nine%20years%20old%20when%20he%20found%20out%20that%20his%20sister%20was%20actually%20his%20mother%2C%20but%20all%20he%20ever%20knew%20about%20his%20father%20was%20the%20name%20Edward%20Fryer%20and%20some%20rumours%20that%20he%20was%20involved%20in%20banking.%20He%20wasn%27t%20even%20sure%20of%20spelling%3A%20Was%20it%20Fryer%20or%20Friar%21%0AProject%20Roots%20first%20became%20involved%20in%20the%20search%20for%20Eric%20Clapton%27s%20father%20in%20September%201997%2C%20when%20Lloyd%20and%20Olga%20Rains%20were%20contacted%20by%20an%20English%20lawyer%20who%20asked%20for%20information%20on%20the%20Canadian%20soldier%20Edward%20Fryer%20or%20Friar.%20The%20lawyer%20would%20not%20reveal%20his%20client%27s%20name%2C%20only%20that%20he%20wanted%20information%20on%20Fryer.%0AThe%20Rains%20had%20never%20heard%20of%20Eric%20Clapton%20so%20the%20name%20Fryer%20meant%20nothing%20to%20them.%20They%20conducted%20a%20regular%20search%20and%20sent%20off%20the%20information%20to%20the%20lawyers.%0ALittle%20did%20they%20know%20that%20at%20the%20same%20they%20were%20looking%20for%20Canadian%20veteran%20Edward%20Fryer%2C%20so%20too%20was%20Michael%20Woloschuk%2C%20a%20writer%20for%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN%2C%20whose%20parallel%20search%20superseded%20Project%20Roots%20and%20ended%20up%20on%20the%20front%20pages%20of%20every%20major%20newspaper%20in%20the%20world%20in%20March%2026%2C%201998.%0AIn%20an%20article%20in%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN%20on%20March%2026%2C%201998%2C%20Woloschuk%20explaind%20that%20he%20began%20looking%20for%20Edward%20Fryer%20in%20the%20fall%20of%201997%2C%20urged%20on%20by%20a%20friend%20who%20knew%20Eric%20Clapton%20was%20planning%20a%20North%20American%20Tour%20in%20March%20to%20promote%20his%20latest%20album%20%26quot%3BPilgrim%26quot%3B.%20Eric%20Clapton%20was%20Woloschuk%27s%20musical%20hero%20and%2C%20like%20anybody%20else%20who%20had%20read%20the%20musician%27s%201985%20biography%2C%20he%20knew%20that%20Clapton%27s%20father%20was%20a%20Canadian%20soldier%20named%20Edward%20Fryer.%20He%20knew%2C%20too%2C%20that%20Clapton%20had%20never%20been%20able%20to%20find%20the%20man.%0AWith%20the%201991%20tragic%20death%20of%20Clapton%27s%20five%20year-old%20son%20Conor%2C%20and%20the%20sucess%20of%20Pilgrim%27s%20hit%20single%2C%20the%20sad%20but%20hopeful%2C%20%26quot%3BMy%20Father%27s%20Eyes%2C%26quot%3B%20it%20seemed%20the%20right%20time%20for%20Woloschuk%20to%20find%20Edward%20Fryer%20using%20his%20journalist%20connections.%20He%20was%20right.%0ASix%20months%20later%2C%20on%20the%20eve%20of%20Clapton%27s%20North%20American%20Tour%2C%20the%20front%20page%20article%20in%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN%20told%20the%20world%20about%20Eric%20Clapton%27s%20father%2C%20a%20talented%20musicians%20and%20artist%20who%20died%20of%20leukemia%20in%20Toronto%20veteran%27s%20hospital%20in%201985.%20Fryer%20was%20also%20a%20marrying%20man%20who%20left%20behind%20a%20trail%20of%20wives%20and%20children%20across%20Canada%20and%20the%20United%20States.%20Three%20half-brothers%20and%20sisters%20from%20British%20Columbia%20to%20Florida%20were%20thrilled%20to%20find%20out%20their%20brother%20was%20Eric%20Clapton%2C%20one%20of%20the%20most%20important%20blues%20guitarist%20in%20the%20world.%0AWith%20Clapton%20on%20the%20verge%20of%20his%20first%20US%20concert%2C%20the%20story%20spread%20like%20wildfire%20across%20North%20American%2C%20Britain%20and%20Europe.%20In%20ain%20interview%20with%20Toronto%u2019s%20Sun%20Media%20they%20day%2C%20was%20quoted%20as%20being%20pleased%2C%20if%20not%20a%20little%20irritated%2C%20that%20the%20family%20he%20had%20sought%20for%20so%20long%20was%20discovered%20by%20a%20Canadian%20newspapers%20reporter.%0A%u201CFirst%20of%20all%2C%20I%20was%20furious%20that%20I%20have%20to%20find%20this%20stuff%20our%20through%20a%20newspapers.%20I%20think%20it%20was%20very%20intrusive%u2014%20but%20then%2C%20newspapers%20are%u201D%20Clapton%20told%20the%20Sun.%20%u201CThen%20I%20thought%2C%20this%20is%20great.%20The%20upside%2C%20the%20positive%20is%2C%20that%20it%20supplied%20me%20with%20information%20I%u2019d%20never%20had%20before%u201D.%0AAccording%20to%20the%20article%2C%20Fryer%20was%20cremated%20and%20his%20ashes%20were%20scattered%20off%20Florida%20waters%20by%20his%20last%20love%2C%20Sylvia%20%28Goldie%29%20Nickason%2C%20an%20Ontario%20woman%20with%20whom%20Fryer%20spent%20his%20last%20years.%0AThe%20Rains%20involvement%20in%20the%20search%20for%20Edward%20Fryer%20had%20begun%20inauspiciously%20enough%20sixt%20months%20earlier%20earlier%20when%20they%20received%20their%20first%20correspondence%20from%20the%20English%20law%20firm%2C%20claiming%20to%20represent%20a%20client%20whose%20father%20was%20a%20Canadian%20soldier%20named%20Edward%20Fryer%20o%20Friar.%0AAs%20she%20had%20done%20for%20so%20many%20others%2C%20Olga%20wrote%20back%20to%20the%20lawyer%20and%20said%20they%20would%20do%20a%20search%20for%20the%20man%20Edward%20Fryer%20or%20Friar.%20She%20sent%20along%20a%20list%20of%2016%20names%20and%20addresses%20of%20E.%20Fryer%20or%20E.%20Friar.%20As%20is%20the%20case%20with%20so%20many%20others%20from%20lawyers%2C%20once%20the%20law%20firm%20got%20the%20information%20Olga%20never%20heard%20from%20them%20again%20%u2014%20even%20to%20say%20thank%20you%20for%20the%20list%20of%20names.%0A%u201CIt%u2019s%20typical%2C%u201D%20Olga%20says.%20%u201C%20As%20soon%20as%20they%20get%20what%20they%20want%20we%20never%20hear%20from%20them%20again%2C%20but%20we%20get%20used%20to%20it.%20It%u2019s%20discoursging%20sometimes%20but%20you%20don%u2019t%20let%20it%20bother%20you.%20There%20are%20too%20many%20good%20people%20out%20there%20who%20appreciate%20what%20we%20do%20and%20besides%2C%20we%20can%20always%20hope%20that%20the%20information%20we%20provided%20helped%20the%20war%20child%20find%20his%20father%20and%20that%20wound%20mean%20something%20goed%20came%20our%20of%20our%20work%20even%20if%20we%20never%20find%20out%20about%20is%u201D.%0AMonths%20passed%20and%20Olga%20never%20gave%20the%20request%20another%20thought.%20Other%20cases%20came%20up%20and%20she%20put%20the%20letters%20aside%20with%20the%20intention%20of%20recycling%20them%20but%20somehow%20the%20correspondence%20survived.%0AIn%20the%20meantime%20unknown%20to%20the%20Rains%20and%20to%20Clapton%u2019s%20high-priced%20English%20lawyers%2C%20journalist%20Michael%20Woloschuk%20was%20making%20headway%20with%20his%20search%20for%20Edward%20Fryer.%20Once%20h%E9%20had%20all%20his%20facts%20together%2C%20the%20story%20unraveled%20on%20the%20front%20page%20of%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN.%0AOlga%20says%20she%20Will%20%u201Cnever%20forget%20the%20day%u201D%20they%20got%20the%20call%20from%20Canada%20saying%20there%20was%20a%20big%20article%20in%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN%20about%20this%20famous%20musician%20named%20Eric%20Clapton%20and%20his%20Canadian%20father%2C%20a%20veteran%20named%20Edward%20Fryer.%0A%u201CI%20knew%20about%20Fryer%2C%20as%20we%20had%20done%20the%20search%20six%20months%20previously%20%2C%20but%20I%20said%20%u201CSo%20who%20is%20this%20Eric%20Clapton%20%21%u201D%20We%u2019re%20old%20people%2C%20we%20don%u2019t%20know%20anything%20about%20rock%20%u2018n%u2019%20roll%20music%21%u201D%0AOnce%20they%20got%20over%20their%20surprise%20that%20a%20famous%20musicans%20named%20Eric%20Clapton%20was%20the%20law%20firm%u2019s%20client%20to%20whom%20they%20had%20provide%20a%20list%20of%20names%20and%20addresses%2C%20the%20Rains%20wrote%20to%20the%20lawyer%20telling%20them%20that%20with%20the%20front%20page%20article%20in%20the%20OTTAWA%20CITIZEN%2C%20the%20cat%20was%20now%20out%20of%20the%20bag.%0AThe%20Rains%20said%20they%20knew%20the%20anonymus%20client%20was%20Eric%20Clapton%20and%20al%20though%20they%20were%20very%20happy%20for%20him%2C%20they%20had%20never%20received%20as%20much%20as%20a%20%u201Cthank%20you%u201D%20for%20sending%20them%20the%20list%20of%20names.%0ALess%20than%20a%20week%20later%2C%20a%20latter%20with%20a%20donation%20to%20Project%20Roots%20arrived%20at%20their%20doorstep%2C%20with%20a%20special%20thank%20you%20from%20the%20lawyer%3A%0A%u201CI%20would%20like%20personally%2C%20and%20on%20behalf%20of%20our%20Client%2C%20to%20thank%20you%20for%20your%20assistance%u201D.%0AAfter%20so%20many%20twists%20and%20turns%2C%20it%20was%20a%20fitting%20end%20to%20the%20search%20for%20a%20Canadian%20soldier%20whose%20son%20just%20happens%20to%20be%20one%20of%20the%20most%20famous%20rock%u2019n%u2019roll%20musicians%20in%20the%20world%20today.%0A%0A%0ABackover.-%0A%0A%u201CVoices%20of%20the%20Left%20%20Behind%u201D%0AContains%20the%20personal%20stories%20of%20nearly%2050%20Canadian%20war%20children%20who%20have%20been%20helped%20by%20Project%20Roots%20since%201980.%20It%20is%20filled%20with%20fascinating%20arch%EDval%20images%20and%20documents%20as%20well%20as%20original%20war%20time%20correspondence%20between%20the%20mothers%20and%20their%20Canadian%20boyfriends%20or%20husbands%2C%20the%20Departement%20of%20National%20Defence%2C%20Veterans%20Affairs%2C%20Inmigration%20Branch%2C%20Canadian%20Red%20Cross%20and%20the%20Canadian%20Wives%20Bureau%2C%20Letters%20from%20the%20war%20children%20to%20the%20Military%20Personnel%20Re
