To%20view%20more%20of%20my%20images%2C%20from%20the%20Isle%20of%20Wight%2C%20please%20click%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//www.flickr.com/photos/35857078@N05/sets/72157622674422890%22%3E%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%26quot%3Bhere%26quot%3B%3C/a%3E%20%21%0A%0A%3Cb%3EOsborne%20House%3C/b%3E%20is%20a%20former%20royal%20residence%20in%20East%20Cowes%2C%20Isle%20of%20Wight%2C%20UK.%20The%20house%20was%20built%20between%201845%20and%201851%20for%20Queen%20Victoria%20and%20Prince%20Albert%20as%20a%20summer%20home%20and%20rural%20retreat.%20Prince%20Albert%20designed%20the%20house%20himself%20in%20the%20style%20of%20an%20Italian%20Renaissance%20palazzo.%20The%20builder%20was%20Thomas%20Cubitt%2C%20the%20London%20architect%20and%20builder%20whose%20company%20built%20the%20main%20fa%E7ade%20of%20Buckingham%20Palace%20for%20the%20royal%20couple%20in%201847.%20An%20earlier%20smaller%20house%20on%20the%20site%20was%20demolished%20to%20make%20way%20for%20a%20new%20and%20far%20larger%20house.%20%20%20Queen%20Victoria%20died%20at%20Osborne%20House%20in%20January%201901.%20Following%20her%20death%2C%20the%20house%20became%20surplus%20to%20royal%20requirements%20and%20was%20given%20to%20the%20state%20with%20a%20few%20rooms%20retained%20as%20a%20private%20royal%20museum%20dedicated%20to%20Queen%20Victoria.%20From%201903%20until%201921%20it%20was%20used%20as%20a%20junior%20officer%20training%20college%20for%20the%20Royal%20Navy%20known%20as%20the%20Royal%20Naval%20College%2C%20Osborne.%20Today%20it%20is%20fully%20open%20to%20the%20public.%20%20%20Queen%20Victoria%20and%20her%20husband%20Prince%20Albert%20bought%20Osborne%20House%20on%20the%20Isle%20of%20Wight%20from%20Lady%20Isabella%20Blachford%20in%20October%201845.%20They%20were%20searching%20for%20a%20home%20away%20from%20the%20stresses%20of%20court%20life.%20Queen%20Victoria%20had%20spent%20two%20holidays%20on%20the%20Isle%20of%20Wight%20as%20a%20young%20girl%2C%20when%20her%20mother%2C%20the%20then%20Duchess%20of%20Kent%2C%20rented%20Norris%20Castle%2C%20the%20estate%20next%20door%20to%20Osborne.%20The%20setting%20of%20the%20existing%20three-storey%20Georgian%20house%20appealed%20to%20Queen%20Victoria%20and%20Prince%20Albert%3B%20in%20particular%2C%20the%20views%20of%20the%20Solent%20reminded%20Albert%20of%20the%20Bay%20of%20Naples%20in%20Italy.%20It%20soon%20became%20obvious%20that%20it%20was%20too%20small%20for%20their%20needs.%20Pulling%20down%20the%20house%20and%20building%20a%20new%20residence%20was%20deemed%20to%20be%20the%20appropriate%20course%20of%20action.%20%20%20The%20house%20consisted%20of%20the%20original%20square%20wing%20known%20as%20%27The%20Pavilion%27%2C%20which%20contained%20the%20principal%20and%20royal%20apartments.%20The%20apartments%20contain%20reminders%20of%20Victoria%27s%20dynastic%20links%20with%20the%20other%20European%20royal%20families.%20The%20Billiard%20Room%20houses%20a%20massive%20porcelain%20vase%2C%20which%20was%20a%20gift%20of%20the%20Russian%20Tsar.%20The%20grandeur%20of%20the%20Billiard%20Room%2C%20Queen%27s%20Dining%20Room%20and%20the%20Drawing%20Room%20on%20the%20ground%20floor%20forms%20a%20marked%20contrast%20with%20the%20much%20more%20homely%20and%20unassuming%20decor%20of%20the%20royal%20apartments%20on%20the%20first%20floor.%20These%20rooms%20include%20the%20Prince%27s%20Dressing%20Room%2C%20the%20Queen%27s%20Sitting%20Room%2C%20the%20Queen%27s%20Bedroom%20and%20the%20children%27s%20nurseries%2C%20which%20were%20intended%20for%20private%2C%20domestic%20use%20and%20were%20therefore%20as%20comfortable%20as%20possible.%20Both%20Queen%20Victoria%20and%20Prince%20Albert%20were%20determined%20to%20bring%20up%20their%20children%20in%20as%20natural%20and%20loving%20an%20environment%20as%20their%20situation%20allowed%2C%20so%20that%20as%20a%20consequence%20the%20royal%20children%20visited%20their%20parents%27%20bedrooms%20when%20other%20children%20of%20a%20similar%20status%20lived%20in%20a%20far%20more%20detached%20manner.%20%20%20Prince%20Albert%27s%20Dressing%20Room%2C%201851%2C%20watercolour%20by%20James%20Roberts.%20%20%20The%20%27main%20wing%27%2C%20containing%20the%20household%20accommodation%20and%20council%20and%20audience%20chambers%2C%20was%20added%20later.%20The%20final%20addition%20to%20the%20house%20was%20a%20wing%20built%20between%201890%20and%201891.%20It%20contains%20on%20the%20ground%20floor%20the%20famous%20Durbar%20Room%20which%20is%20named%20after%20an%20anglicised%20version%20of%20the%20Hindi%20word%20durbar.%20This%20word%20means%20court.%20The%20Durbar%20Room%20was%20built%20for%20state%20functions%20and%20decorated%20by%20Bhai%20Ram%20Singh%20in%20an%20elaborate%20and%20intricate%20style%2C%20with%20a%20carpet%20from%20Agra.%20It%20now%20contains%20the%20gifts%20Queen%20Victoria%20received%20on%20her%20Golden%20and%20Diamond%20Jubilees.%20These%20inclu
