I%20am%20adding%20the%20description%20that%20I%20wrote%20under%20a%20different%2C%20previously%20posted%20image%20taken%20on%20the%20same%20walk.%20%20These%20five%20photos%20were%20in%20a%20photo%20folder%20that%20I%20had%20barely%20used.%20%20This%20happens%20too%20often%20-%20I%20post%20a%20few%20photos%20from%20an%20outing%20and%20then%20I%20get%20busy%20and%20never%20get%20back%20to%20finishing.%20%20Comes%20in%20handy%20at%20the%20moment%2C%20though%2C%20as%20I%27ll%20have%20to%20stay%20home%20for%20days%20in%20two%20days%27%20time%2C%20to%20rest%20my%20left%20knee%2C%20following%20a%20cortisone%20shot.%0A%0A%26quot%3BThree%20days%20ago%2C%20on%2017%20August%202016%2C%20I%20drove%20my%20painfully%20noisy%20vehicle%20for%20just%20a%20very%20short%20distance%2C%20as%20far%20as%20a%20local%20park.%20%20Each%20year%2C%20I%20tend%20to%20visit%20the%20area%20to%20look%20for%20any%20mushrooms%2C%20and%20I%20knew%20that%20I%20just%20couldn%27t%20miss%20a%20quick%20visit.%20%20Found%20a%20few%20fungi%20to%20photograph%2C%20so%20I%20was%20happy.%20%20Then%20I%20remembered%20that%20I%20had%20found%20mushrooms%20in%20a%20different%20part%20of%20the%20park%20in%20other%20years%2C%20so%20yesterday%2C%20I%20risked%20an%20even%20shorter%20drive%20to%20see%20what%20I%20could%20find.%20%20Everywhere%20was%20quite%20dry%20and%20I%20saw%20quite%20a%20few%20shrivelled%20fungi.%20%20Luckily%2C%20I%20came%20across%20a%20few%20that%20were%20fresher%20and%20worth%20photographing.%20%20So%20dark%20in%20the%20forest%20and%20many%20photos%20were%20not%20as%20sharp%20as%20I%20would%20have%20liked.%0A%0AAt%20the%20end%20of%20my%20walk%2C%20I%20sat%20at%20a%20picnic%20table%20near%20the%20parking%20lot%20and%20kept%20an%20eye%20on%20all%20the%20large%20holes%20in%20the%20ground%2C%20made%20by%20Richardson%27s%20Ground%20Squirrels.%20%20I%20was%20just%20about%20ready%20to%20give%20up%2C%20when%20I%20happened%20to%20look%20down%20close%20to%20my%20feet%20and%20there%20was%20one%20solitary%20%27Gopher%27%20three%20or%20four%20feet%20away%20from%20me.%20%20They%20are%20such%20fun%20to%20watch.%20%20Returned%20home%20without%20running%20into%20a%20Police%20car%2C%20which%20could%20very%20easily%20have%20pulled%20me%20over%20because%20of%20the%20dreadful%20noise%20my%20car%20is%20making.%20%20Today%2C%2020%20August%202016%2C%20is%20day%2012%20since%20ordering%20my%20new%20car%20....%20sigh.%26quot%3B%0A%0A%26quot%3BThe%20Richardson%u2019s%20ground%20squirrel%20is%20commonly%20called%20the%20prairie%20gopher%2C%20yellow%20gopher%2C%20flicker%20tail%20or%20picket%20pin.%20It%20was%20named%20after%20the%20naturalist%20John%20Richardson%20who%20first%20collected%20specimens%20of%20the%20rodent%20in%20the%20early%201820%u2019s.%0A%0AGround%20squirrels%20play%20an%20important%20role%20in%20the%20ecology%20of%20Alberta%u2019s%20wildlife.%20Ground%20squirrels%20are%20a%20major%20source%20of%20food%20for%20many%20predatory%20birds%2C%20mammals%20and%20reptiles.%20One%20species%20of%20raptor%2C%20the%20ferruginous%20hawk%2C%20depends%20almost%20entirely%20on%20ground%20squirrels%20to%20fledge%20their%20chicks.%20Similarly%2C%20many%20other%20species%20rely%20on%20ground%20squirrels%20as%20a%20major%20food%20source.%0A%0AThe%20population%20status%20of%20Richardson%u2019s%20ground%20squirrels%20varies%20from%20year%20to%20year%20but%20is%20generally%20rated%20as%20%u201Cnot%20at%20risk.%u201D%20Richardson%u2019s%20ground%20squirrels%20are%20also%20unregulated%2C%20which%20means%20they%20can%20be%20lawfully%20shot%2C%20trapped%20or%20otherwise%20removed%20where%20permitted.%0A%0ARichardson%u2019s%20ground%20squirrels%20spend%20the%20majority%20of%20their%20life%20underground.%20In%20their%20underground%20burrow%20system%2C%20they%20usually%20mate%2C%20raise%20their%20litters%20for%20the%20first%2028%20days%20and%20avoid%20predators%20%28except%20weasels%20and%20badgers%29%20and%20inclement%20weather%20%28heat%2C%20cold%20and%20rain%29.%20They%20sleep%20underground%20from%20just%20before%20sunset%20until%20shortly%20after%20sunrise%20and%20hibernate%20for%20up%20to%20eight%20months%20in%20their%20burrows.%26quot%3B%20%20Taken%20from%20link%20below.%0A%0A%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A//www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/%24department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex3471%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Ewww1.agric.gov.ab.ca/%24department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex3471%3C/a%3E
