A%20walk%20in%20Denge%20Wood

Today%20%28Sunday%29%20is%20going%20to%20be%20busy%2C%20what%20with%20Jen%20coming%20for%20lunch%20and%20football%20and%20%23wildflowerhour%20later%2C%20so%20I%20am%20writing%20the%20blogs%20nice%20and%20early.%0A%0AIt%20is%20nearly%20a%20year%20since%20COVID%20hit%2C%20and%20although%20lockdown%20didn%27t%20begin%20here%20until%20the%2023rd%2C%20this%20was%20really%20the%20last%20weekend%20of%20normality.%20On%20Friday%20we%20collected%20our%20new%20car%20from%20Canterbury%2C%20I%27ll%20say%20again%20I%20never%20thought%20we%20would%20be%20in%20a%20position%20to%20buy%20a%20new%20car%2C%20let%20alone%20an%20Audi%2C%20made%20me%20feel%20like%20a%20millionaire.%20On%20the%20Saturday%20we%20went%20to%20Rochester%20to%20look%20round%20the%20cathedral%2C%20have%20breakfast%20out%20then%20went%20to%20Cuxton%20for%20some%20churchcrawling.%20The%20last%20such%20time%20we%20did%20that%20until%20September%2C%20really.%0A%0ALife%20hasn%27t%20got%20back%20to%20normal%20since%20then.%0A%0AA%20year%20on%2C%20some%20easing%20is%20going%20to%20happen%20on%20Monday%2C%20but%20for%20us%20there%20won%27t%20be%20that%20much%20change%2C%20we%20will%20take%20care%2C%20mix%20as%20little%20as%20possible%2C%20so%20stay%20safe%20and%20keep%20others%20safe%2C%20thus%20reducing%20the%20strain%20on%20the%20NHS.%0A%0AOn%20Saturday%2C%20the%20plan%20was%20for%20some%20walking%20in%20the%20sunshine.%0A%0AI%20had%20noticed%20on%20Google%20Maps%20that%20the%20Nailbourne%20seemed%20to%20be%20joined%20by%20a%20new%20bourne%20just%20west%20of%20Bishopsbourne%2C%20and%20its%20source%20seemed%20to%20be%20a%20pond%20in%20the%20meadow.%20We%20had%20crossed%20this%20stream%20two%20weeks%20ago%2C%20but%20I%20thought%20it%20was%20just%20where%20the%20main%20Nailbourne%20had%20split%20somewhere%20in%20the%20woods%20in%20the%20village.%20I%20was%20wrong%2C%20this%20seems%20a%20more%20permanent%20flow%2C%20with%20the%20image%20on%20Google%20suggested%20it%20flowed%20in%20summer%20when%20the%20main%20bourne%20was%20dry.%0A%0ASo%20after%20breakfast%20of%20toast%20made%20with%20the%20crust%20of%20the%20loaf%20I%20made%20last%20week%20and%20criossants%20to%20follow%2C%20we%20left%20at%20about%20nine%20for%20the%20short%20drive%20along%20the%20A2%20to%20Bridge%2C%20turning%20down%20the%20moss-covered%20lane%20into%20Bishopbourne%20and%20parking%20outside%20the%20church.%0A%0AIt%20was%20about%20ten%20degrees%20colder%20than%20the%20last%20time%20we%20were%20there%2C%20two%20weeks%20previous%2C%20so%20we%20wrapped%20up%20and%20walked%20through%20the%20churchyard%20and%20through%20the%20gate%20into%20the%20meadow.%20%0A%0AAt%20least%20being%20early%20it%20meant%20that%20dogwalkers%20and%20families%20and%20families%20walking%20children%20and%20dogs%20were%20still%20at%20home%2C%20meaning%20it%20was%20quiet%20and%20safer.%20It%20was%20just%20a%20short%20walk%20to%20the%20first%20concrete%20bridge%2C%20then%20turning%20from%20the%20path%20we%20walked%20to%20the%20pond%2C%20with%20sheep%20with%20attendant%20lambs%20behind.%0A%0AIts%20not%20much%20to%20look%20at%2C%20but%20bubbling%20from%20the%20base%20of%20a%20shallow%20bank%20was%20clear%20cold%20water%2C%20in%20a%20steady%20flow%2C%20and%20runs%20ofter%20enough%20that%20here%2C%20and%20in%20the%20outflow%20stream%2C%20no%20grass%20grows%20in%20its%20bed%2C%20instead%20it%20is%20lined%20with%20gravel%20and%20stones.%0A%0AI%20take%20pictures%20and%20we%20are%20done.%0A%0AWe%20walk%20back%20to%20the%20car%20for%20the%20short%20drive%20through%20Bridge%2C%20Hardres%20and%20Petham%20to%20Denge%20Wood.%0A%0AWe%20were%20going%20to%20Denge%20Wood%2C%20obviously%20to%20check%20on%20the%20orchid%20rosettes%2C%20but%20a%20walk%20is%20never%20wasted.%20I%20was%20hoping%20to%20see%20some%20different%20flowers%20in%20bloom%2C%20even%20this%20early%2C%20especially%20Coltsfoot%2C%20a%20member%20of%20the%20dandelio/daisy%20family%20that%20flowers%20before%20it%27s%20hoof-shaped%20leaves%20appear%20in%20about%20a%20month.%0A%0AWe%20parked%20in%20Pennypot%20Lane%2C%20in%20the%20usual%20place.%20There%20had%20been%20some%20logging%2C%20so%20the%20track%20was%20rutted%20and%20muddy%2C%20and%20gaps%20in%20the%20trees%20to%20the%20right%20as%20we%20began%20to%20walk%20down%20to%20Bonsai.%20Its%20also%20lighter%20because%20there%20were%20no%20leaves%20in%20the%20canopy%2C%20so%20much%20airy%20and%20open%20than%20it%20will%20be%20in%20even%20a%20month.%0A%0ANot%20much%20to%20see%2C%20until%20at%20the%20lowest%20point%2C%20where%20there%20was%20a%20stack%20of%20pine%20longs%2C%20on%20the%20other%20side%20a%20few%20stalks%20reached%20for%20the%20sky.%20Coltsfoot%20only%20really%20open%20on%20a%20sunny%20day%2C%20and%20it%20was%20still%20cool%2C%20and%20the%20endless%20sunshine%20promised%20had%20instead%20turned%20into%20sunny%20intervals%2C%20so%20the%20flowers%20were%20partially%20open%20at%20best.%0A%0AOh%20well.%0A%0AFurther%20on%20we%20go%20into%20the%20resrve%2C%20taking%20the%20top%20path%2C%20eyes%20down%20looking%20for%20rosettes.%20Good%20news%20is%20that%20we%20saw%20dozens%2C%20maybe%20hundreds%2C%20with%20more%20emerging%2C%20mostly%20of%20Lady%20Orchids%2C%20it%20will%20be%20a%20good%20display%20come%20May.%0A%0AI%20marvel%20at%20the%20silver%20birches%20that%20I%20don%27t%20notice%2C%20not%20when%20there%20is%20green%20all%20around%2C%20but%20their%20trunks%20and%20bark%20stand%20out%20well%20against%20the%20bare%20down%20behind.%0A%0AWe%20are%20done%2C%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20reseve%2C%20so%20we%20turn%20back%20and%20wander%20back%20towards%20the%20car.%0A%0AWe%20stop%20outside%20the%20reserve%2C%20sit%20on%20a%20bank%20to%20allow%20by%20acheing%20back%20some%20respite%2C%20and%20we%20were%20disturbed%20by%20a%20couple%20of%20couples%2C%20walking%20and%20talking%20in%20high%20class%20accents%2C%20they%20would%20scare%20anything%20off%20that%20wasn%27t%20stone%20deaf.%0A%0AHave%20you%20seen%20anything%20one%20of%20the%20ladies%20asks%2C%20we%20say%20orchids%2C%20flowers%2C%20and%20they%20are%20happy.%20But%20they%20miss%20the%20two%20buzzards%20circling%20above.%20There%27s%20always%20something%20to%20see%2C%20if%20you%20know%20where%20and%20how%20to%20look.%0A%0AWe%20drove%20home%2C%20nothing%20exciting%20happened%2C%20getting%20back%20at%20midday.%0A%0AI%20make%20tacos%20for%20lunch%3A%20I%20had%20made%20the%20tomato%20sauce%20before%20we%20left%2C%20to%20allow%20the%20spices%20and%20chipotles%20to%20add%20to%20the%20depth%20of%20flavour.%20Back%20home%20I%20butcher%20the%20chicken%20thighs%2C%20gently%20cook%20them%2C%20add%20the%20sauce%2C%20warm%20the%20shells%20and%20we%20sit%20down%20to%20eat%20at%20abot%20half%20one%2C%20Jools%20with%20a%20cider%20and%20me%20with%20a%20large%20glass%20of%20tripel.%0A%0APerfect.%0A%0AWe%20sit%20down%20to%20watch%20the%20football%20at%20three.%20I%20watch%20the%20footy%2C%20Jools%20nods%20off%20and%20sleeps%20through%20to%20five.%20I%20watch%20the%20Middlesborough%20v%20Swansea%20game%2C%20listen%20to%20the%20radio%20for%20the%20Prem%20game%2C%20and%20follow%20Norwich%20via%20Twitter.%0A%0AIt%20is%20a%20perfect%20afternoon%2C%20especially%20as%20Norwich%20have%20a%20fine%20old%20time%2C%20beating%20lUton%203-0%2C%20and%20playing%20like%20the%20Citeh%20of%20the%20Championship%20acording%20to%20the%20Hatter%27s%20manager.%0A%0ABack%20to%20ten%20points%20clear%2C%20buh.%0A%0AI%20watch%20the%20Wolves%20v%20Villa%20game%20next%2C%20and%20is%20entertaining%20without%20having%20a%20goal.%20We%20have%20crispbakes%20in%20rolls%20for%20supper%2C%20with%20more%20tripel%2C%20and%20the%20evening%20draws%20to%20a%20peaceful%20end.%20Outside%20the%20half%20moon%20shone%20down%20from%20a%20jet%20black%20sky
