20after%20deciding%20to%20pursue%20photography%20in%20a%20professional%20capacity%20and%20working%20as%20a%20photojournalist%20for%20several%20magazines%2C%20Andujar%20joined%20the%20team%20of%20photographers%20established%20for%20the%20monthly%20periodical%20Realidade%20%u2014%20a%20publication%20noted%20for%20its%20long-form%20reportages.%20It%20was%20during%20her%20work%20on%20a%20320-page%20special%20issue%2C%20which%20was%20devoted%20to%20the%20still%20largely%20uncharted%20Amazon%20region%20and%20the%20impact%20of%20the%20military%20regime%20on%20it%2C%20that%20she%20first%20met%20the%20Yanomami.%20It%20was%20around%20this%20time%20that%20Andujar%u2019s%20commitment%20to%20photojournalism%20also%20faltered%2C%20and%20she%20received%20a%20grant%20from%20the%20John%20Simon%20Guggenheim%20Foundation%2C%20which%20facilitated%20the%20long-term%2C%20personal%20projects%2C%20she%20so%20desired.%20Initially%20interested%20in%20photographing%20the%20Xikrin%20Indians%2C%20on%20the%20recommendation%20of%20a%20friend%20and%20Swiss%20ethnologist%2C%20in%201971%2C%20she%20went%20in%20search%20of%20the%20Yanomami%20living%20along%20the%20Catrimani%20River%2C%20which%20stretches%20from%20the%20Parima%20mountain%20range%20on%20the%20Brazil-Venezuela%20border%2C%20down%20to%20Manaus.%20The%20Yanomami%20reportedly%20originated%20from%20the%20area%3B%20today%20the%20community%2C%20comprising%20various%20tribes%20and%20clans%2C%20numbers%20somewhere%20around%2036%2C000%20and%20occupies%20an%20area%20spanning%20northern%20Brazil%20and%20southern%20Venezuela.%0A%0A%u201CFrom%20the%20beginning%2C%20it%20was%20a%20relation%20of%20man%20to%20man%2C%u201D%20she%20explains%20in%20the%20exhibition%20catalogue%2C%20an%20affinity%20undoubtedly%20motivated%2C%20in%20part%2C%20by%20the%20photographer%u2019s%20personal%20history%20of%20repression%20and%20displacement.%20The%20first%20two%20rooms%20of%20the%20exhibition%20convey%20a%20sense%20of%20the%20photographer%u2019s%20initial%20immersion.%20Dreamlike%20images%20suspended%20from%20the%20ceiling%20provide%20windows%20into%20the%20Yanomami%u2019s%20everyday%20lives%20and%20Andujar%u2019s%20impression%20of%20them.%20Unfocused%20and%20abstracted%2C%20with%20many%20rendered%20in%20vivid%20colour%2C%20the%20photographs%20exude%20movement%20and%20life%3A%20expressive%20responses%20to%20the%20mystical%20existence%20of%20a%20people%20the%20photographer%20was%20only%20just%20beginning%20to%20understand.%20%u201CAt%20the%20time%2C%20it%20didn%u2019t%20bother%20me%20not%20to%20understand%20the%20language%20of%20the%20Yanomami%2C%u201D%20she%20writes%2C%20%u201C%u2026%20I%20didn%u2019t%20miss%20the%20exchange%20of%20words.%20I%20wanted%20to%20observe%2C%20absorb%2C%20in%20order%20to%20recreate%20in%20the%20form%20of%20images%20what%20I%20was%20feeling.%20Perhaps%20dialogue%20might%20even%20interfere.%u201D%0A%0AFrom%201971%20to%201977%2C%20Andujar%20travelled%20back%20and%20forth%20to%20Catrimini%20River%20for%20progressively%20longer%20periods.%20Here%2C%20the%20Yanomami%20community%20was%20still%20relatively%20untouched%20%u2014%20their%20traditions%20and%20rituals%20isolated%20from%20Western%20influence.%20Andujar%20participated%20in%20everyday%20activities%3A%20hunting%20expeditions%2C%20funeral%20feasts%2C%20and%20the%20%u2018reahu%u2019%3A%20both%20a%20commemoration%20of%20alliances%20between%20communities%20and%20a%20funeral%20ritual%2C%20to%20which%20a%20section%20of%20the%20exhibition%20is%20devoted%20alongside%20other%20Yanomami%20ceremonies.%20She%20also%20photographed%20within%20the%20yano%3A%20large%2C%20cone-shaped%20communal%20houses%20inhabited%20by%20dozens%20of%20families%20that%20hummed%20with%20activity.%20Eschewing%20a%20journalistic%20or%20anthropological%20approach%2C%20Andujar%20developed%20her%20own%20visual%20language%2C%20one%20that%20would%20capture%20the%20nuances%20of%20the%20Yanomami%u2019s%20isolated%20world%2C%20and%2C%20in%20doing%20so%2C%20delved%20deep%20inside%20herself%3A%20%u201CPhotography%20is%20the%20process%20of%20discovering%20the%20other%20and%2C%20through%20the%20other%2C%20oneself%2C%u201D%20she%20writes.%20%u201CIntrinsically%2C%20that%20is%20why%20the%20photographer%20seeks%20and%20discovers%20new%20worlds%20but%20in%20the%20end%2C%20always%20shows%20what%20is%20inside%20himself.%u201D%0A%0AHerein%20lies%20the%20complexity%20of%20Andujar%u2019s%20initial%20project%3A%20a%20white%2C%20foreigner%20documenting%20an%20indigenous%20community%20could%20be%20read%20as%20exoticising%3B%20some%20would%20also%20argue%20that%20Andujar%20glossed%20over%20the%20darker%20elements%20of%20the%20Yanomami%u2019s%20way%20of%20life.%20An%20article%20in%20The%20New%20York%20Review%20of%20Books%2C%20reviewing%20Andujar%u2019s%20previous%20exhibition%20at%20Moreira%20Salles%2C%20mentions%20a%201968%20book%20by%20the%20anthropologist%20Napoleon%20Chagnon.%20He%20described%20the%20Yanomami%20as%20a%20machismo%20culture%2C%20with%20different%20groups%20engaged%20in%20constant%20warfare%2C%20provoked%20by%20the%20rape%20and%20abduction%20of%20their%20female%20members.%20Other%20anthropologists%20and%20members%20of%20the%20Yanomami%20disputed%20this%2C%20and%20Chagnon%20likely%20exaggerated%20his%20assertions%20if%20they%20were%20true%20at%20all.%20But%2C%20one%20must%20acknowledge%20that%20Andujar%u2019s%20images%20are%20deeply%20subjective%2C%20a%20fact%20that%20also%20prevents%20them%20from%20feeling%20voyeuristic.%20Rather%20impulse%20prevails%20%u2014%20a%20photographer%20committed%20to%20developing%20a%20visual%20language%20that%20would%20accurately%20represent%20a%20group%20in%20which%20she%20was%20increasingly%20invested.%0A%0AAndujar%20developed%20an%20aesthetic%20that%20was%20resolutely%20abstract.%20She%20would%20often%20apply%20Vaseline%20to%20her%20camera%2C%20allowing%20the%20edges%20of%20some%20images%20to%20melt%20away.%20The%20photographer%20employed%20infrared%20film%20and%20coloured%20filters%20to%20enhance%20the%20tones%20of%20her%20colour%20work%3B%20the%20darkness%20of%20the%20dense%20forest%20and%20interiors%20of%20the%20Yanomami%u2019s%20homes%20demanded%20sensitive%20film%20and%20slow%20shutter%20speeds%2C%20which%20further%20blurred%20some%20stills.%20When%20documenting%20the%20various%20rituals%20of%20a%20%u2018reahu%u2019%2C%20Andujar%20applied%20multiple%20exposures%20to%20visually%20convey%20the%20rhythm%20and%20otherworldliness%20of%20the%20events%20during%20which%20shamans%20would%20call%20upon%20their%20spirits%2C%20%u2018xapiri%u2019%2C%20while%20tripping%20on%20hallucinogenic%20powder.%20In%201974%2C%20she%20also%20provided%20the%20community%20with%20an%20opportunity%20to%20express%20their%20interpretation%20of%20nature%20and%20the%20universe%20in%20the%20form%20of%20drawing%2C%20resulting%20in%20intricate%20illustrations%20that%20occupy%20a%20wall%20on%20the%20lower%20floor%20of%20the%20exhibition%20space.%20What%20emerged%20was%20an%20unprecedented%20depiction%20of%20Yanomami%20life%2C%20an%20artistic%20response%20to%20an%20increasingly%20fragile%20and%20ethereal%20existence%2C%20and%2C%20a%20record%20of%20Andujar%u2019s%20artistic%20development%2C%20which%20was%20veering%20further%20and%20further%20from%20her%20photojournalistic%20roots.%0A%0ABut%2C%20this%20would%20soon%20change.%20On%20the%20exhibition%u2019s%20lower%20floor%20the%20mood%20and%20aesthetic%20shift%3A%20a%20stillness%20and%20soberness%20take%20over.%20In%201977%2C%20the%20National%20Indian%20Foundation%2C%20the%20branch%20of%20the%20Brazilian%20government%20devoted%20to%20policies%20related%20to%20indigenous%20people%2C%20denied%20Andujar%20permission%20to%20return%20to%20the%20Yanomami.%20At%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20decade%2C%20the%20government%2C%20an%20authoritarian%20military%20dictatorship%2C%20established%20a%20development%20program%20that%20would%20industrialise%20vast%20swathes%20of%20the%20Amazon.%20The%20construction%20of%20the%20Perimetral%20Norte%20highway%2C%20a%20section%20of%20the%20planned%20Transamazonian%20highway%20that%20cut%20through%20indigenous%20people%u2019s%20land%2C%20was%20initiated%20in%201973%20and%20exposed%20the%20Yanomami%20to%20disease%20and%20conflict%2C%20resulting%20in%20the%20deaths%20of%20thousands.%20The%20government%20likely%20identified%20Andujar%20as%20a%20threat%20%u2014%20a%20witness%20to%2C%20and%20spokesperson%20for%2C%20the%20plight%20of%20indigenous%20cultures%2C%20which%20is%20what%20she%20became%20in%20the%20decades%20that%20followed.%20In%20the%20time%20it%20took%20her%20to%20regain%20access%2C%20she%20published%20three%20books%2C%20which%20heightened%20awareness%20of%20the%20Yanomami%u2019s%20hardship%20among%20a%20wider%20demographic.%20And%20so%20began%20an%20era%20in%20which%20the%20photographer%20abandoned%20her%20artistic%20practice.%20Instead%2C%20the%20medium%20became%20a%20vehicle%20for%20her%20activism.%0A%0AAside%20from%20Andujar%u2019s%20images%2C%20there%20existed%20little%20documentation%20of%20the%20Yanomami.%20The%20community%20rejected%20the%20medium%2C%20concerned%20that%20images%20depicting%20them%20could%20fall%20into%20the%20wrong%20hands%20and%20be%20subject%20to%20sorcery.%20Furthermore%2C%20it%20was%20customary%20that%20any%20photographs%2C%20which%20did%20exist%2C%20be%20destroyed%20following%20the%20death%20of%20the%20individual%20they%20depicted.%20However%2C%20with%20the%20support%20of%20Davi%20Kopenawa%2C%20a%20Yanomami%20activist%20and%20shaman%20who%20the%20photographer%20met%20in%201977%20and%20with%20whom%20she%20collaborated%20closely%2C%20Andujar%20was%20able%20to%20convince%20the%20community%20that%20visual%20records%20of%20their%20culture%20were%20central%20to%20the%20cause.%20She%20also%20acknowledged%20that%20photography%20alone%20was%20not%20enough%2C%20and%20in%201978%2C%20alongside%20Kopenaw%2C%20the%20French%20anthropologist%20Bruce%20Albert%20and%20missionary%20Carlo%20Zacquini%2C%20Andujar%20founded%20the%20Comiss%E3o%20Pro-Yanomami%20%28CCPY%29%2C%20embarking%20on%20a
