The%20KOM%20League%0AFlash%20Report%0ATo%20end%202020%0Aand%20%0AKickoff%202021%0A%0AIf%20interested%2C%20this%20report%20is%20accessible%20at%3A%20%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//www.flickr.com/photos/60428361@N07/50766767243/%22%3Ewww.flickr.com/photos/60428361@N07/50766767243/%3C/a%3E%0AEven%20if%20you%20are%20not%20interested%2C%20it%20is%20still%20there.%20%20It%20is%20the%20reader%u2019s%20choice%20to%20either%20partake%20or%20reject.%20%20Sure%20hope%20a%20few%20do%20the%20former.%0A____________________________________________________________________________%0AAnnual%20%20Christmas%20call%0A%0AEach%20year%2C%20approximately%20two%20or%20three%20days%20prior%20to%20Christmas%2C%20a%20cheerful%20voice%20announces%20that%20he%20is%20calling%20to%20tell%20his%20old%20friend%20Merry%20Christmas.%20The%20caller%20is%20Billy%20Bagwell%20of%20Homer%2C%20Louisiana%20and%20each%20time%20he%20relates%20that%20God%20is%20blessing%20him%20and%20that%20he%20loves%20my%20wife%20and%20I.%20%20This%20year%20a%20little%20more%20was%20elicited%20from%20him%20in%20the%20conversation.%20%20He%20is%20undergoing%20treatment%20for%20cancer%20and%20all%20is%20not%20as%20well%20as%20he%20would%20like.%20%20%20His%20parting%20comment%20was%20%u201CJohn%2C%20I%20hope%20that%20I%20will%20be%20here%20next%20year%20to%20wish%20you%20a%20Merry%20Christmas.%u201D%20%20I%20too%2C%20hope%20that%20is%20the%20case%20realizing%20that%20can%20go%20both%20ways.%20%20%0A%0ABagwell%20and%20his%20wife%20Joyce%20attended%20every%20KOM%20league%20reunion%20and%20was%20always%20the%20hit%20of%20the%20event%20when%20his%20did%20his%20pantomime%20of%20the%20man%20whose%20suit%20didn%u2019t%20fit.%20%20It%20was%20such%20a%20humorous%20act%20that%20even%20those%20with%20hearing%20loss%20would%20laugh%20without%20being%20able%20to%20hear%20his%20words.%20%20%0A%0ABagwell%20has%20been%20mentioned%20numerous%20times%20in%20these%20reports.%20%20Since%20this%20report%20is%20far%20too%20voluminous%20I%u2019m%20sharing%20this%20link%20to%20indicate%20is%20extensive%20minor%20league%20career%20after%20he%20had%20served%20in%20WW%20II.%20%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//digital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/12518/rec/13%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Edigital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/12518/...%3C/a%3E%0A%0AAnother%20Christmas%20call%20used%20to%20come%20each%20afternoon%20on%20the%2025th%20of%20December.%20%20It%20originated%20in%20Springfield%2C%20Missouri%20and%20was%20from%20the%20all-time%20home%20run%20hitter%20in%20KOM%20league%20history%2C%20Don%20Ervin.%20%20He%20was%20a%20native%20of%20Kansas%20City%20and%20did%20his%20heavy%20clouting%20for%20the%201952%20Miami%2C%20Oklahoma%20Eagles.%20%20In%20recent%20years%20correspondence%20has%20been%20established%20with%20his%20daughter.%20%20This%20was%20a%20recent%20e-mail%20from%20her.%20%20%u201CMerry%20Christmas.%20%20It%u2019s%20been%20almost%203%20years%20since%20my%20dad%20passed.%20%20Thank%20you%20for%20the%20pictures%20you%20send%20out.%20%20They%20are%20uplifting%20in%20times%20of%20sadness.%u201D%0A%0AThere%20were%20many%20family%20members%2C%20of%20deceased%20KOM%20leaguers%2C%20who%20sent%20along%20Christmas%20greetings%20and%20a%20few%20former%20members%20of%20the%20league%20who%20sent%20greetings%20on%20their%20own%20behalf.%20%0A_______________________________________________________%0AOne%20game%20shortstop.%0A%0AIn%20the%20final%20week%20of%20the%201946%20season%20the%20St.%20Louis%20Cardinals%20sent%20a%20World%20War%20II%20veteran%20to%20Carthage%2C%20Missouri%20%20John%20James%20Meyer%20played%20in%20one%20game.%20%20It%20was%20the%20114th%20contest%20of%20the%20season%20and%20he%20went%200-4%20at%20the%20plate.%20%20The%20next%20spring%20he%20reported%20to%20the%20Cardinal%20training%20camp%20at%20Albany%2C%20Georgia%20but%20wasn%u2019t%20on%20the%20bus%20to%20Carthage%20when%20the%20team%20headed%20north.%20%20That%20concluded%20his%20professional%20baseball%20days.%0A%0AHowever%2C%20Meyer%20left%20a%20lasting%20memory%20of%20his%20very%20short%20time%20with%20Carthage.%20%20On%20the%20last%20day%20of%20the%20season%20he%20signed%20a%20baseball%20and%20that%2C%20along%20with%20one%20box%20score%2C%20are%20the%20only%20remaining%20pieces%20of%20evidence%20that%20he%20played%20professional%20baseball.%20%20Thanks%20to%20the%20late%20Oscar%20%u201CPappy%u201D%20Walterman%20that%20baseball%20remains%20in%20my%20possession%20in%20a%20place%20that%20will%20not%20be%20revealed%20due%20to%20security%20reasons.%20%20Well%2C%20a%20little%20exaggeration%20isn%u2019t%20all%20that%20bad%2C%20is%20it%3F%0A%0AJohn%20James%20Meyer.https%3A//www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/18444007/%20%20John-James-Meyer/Jeromesville/Ohio/Fickes-Funeral-Home%0A%0AJohn%20J.%20Meyer%20went%20to%20be%20with%20his%20Lord%20and%20Savior%20Jesus%20Christ%20on%20September%2024%2C%202020%20surrounded%20by%20his%20devoted%20family.%20Born%20May%2025%2C%201925%20in%20Stryker%2C%20Ohio%2C%20he%20was%20the%20only%20child%20of%20Carl%20and%20Miriam%20%28Koehl%29%20Meyer.%20In%201937%2C%20the%20family%20moved%20to%20England%20Station%20in%20rural%20Ashland%20County%20where%20they%20had%20purchased%20a%20farm.%20John%20attended%20a%20one-room%20schoolhouse%20until%20the%20eighth%20grade%20and%20graduated%20from%20Ashland%20High%20School%20in%201943.%20Upon%20graduation%2C%20he%20enlisted%20in%20the%20US%20Navy%20where%20he%20received%20his%20commission%20in%201944%20after%20attending%20Oberlin%20College%20and%20Illinois%20State%20University%20in%20Normal%2C%20Illinois.%20On%20November%2024%2C%201945%2C%20John%20married%20Nona%20Harriet%20Powers%20in%20San%20Francisco%2C%20CA%20where%20he%20was%20stationed%20during%20World%20War%20II.%20Upon%20his%20discharge%20in%201946%2C%20John%20and%20Nona%20returned%20to%20the%20family%20farm%20in%20England%20Station%20where%20they%20raised%20their%20family%20of%20six%20sons%20and%20two%20daughters.%20John%20and%20Nona%20also%20opened%20their%20home%20to%20several%20foster%20children%20throughout%20the%20years.%0A%0AJohn%20made%20a%20life%20and%20a%20living%20primarily%20on%20the%20family%20farm.%20During%20his%20lifetime%20he%20sold%20seed%20corn%20and%20was%20a%20dairy%20and%20grain%20farmer.%20John%20learned%20to%20fix%20anything%20and%20always%20had%20a%20spare%20part%20or%20tool%20and%20some%20words%20of%20wisdom%20when%20anyone%20needed%20them.%20He%20farmed%20in%20some%20capacity%20into%20his%20nineties.%20He%20also%20was%20a%20Broker/Realtor%20at%20his%20son%u2019s%20real%20estate%20company%2C%20JC%20Meyer%20Realtors.%20He%20earned%20many%20awards%20as%20a%20Realtor%20including%20Salesman%20of%20the%20Year%20and%20the%20coveted%20Realtor%20of%20the%20Year%20from%20the%20Ashland%20Board%20of%20Realtors.%0A%0AHaving%20a%20strong%20sense%20of%20community%2C%20he%20served%20as%20a%204-H%20advisor%20for%2025%20years%2C%20a%20Montgomery%20Township%20Trustee%20for%2020%20years%2C%20an%20Ashland%20County%20Fair%20Board%20Director%20for%20over%2030%20years%2C%20and%20held%20many%20positions%2C%20including%20Board%20President%2C%20with%20the%20Ashland%20Board%20of%20Realtors.%20He%20was%20a%20long-time%20member%20of%20the%20Ashland%20Dickey%20Church%20of%20the%20Brethren%20and%20was%20a%20proud%20World%20War%20II%20Veteran.%0A%0AJohn%20was%20preceded%20in%20death%20by%20his%20son%20John%20%28JC%29%20in%202002%20and%20his%20wife%20Nona%20in%202009.%20He%20is%20survived%20by%20his%20children%20and%20their%20spouses%3A%20Chris%20and%20Sharon%20Meyer%20%28Ashland%29%2C%20Rex%20Meyer%20%28Ashland%29%2C%20Paul%20and%20Kris%20Meyer%20%28Gold%20Hill%2C%20Oregon%29%2C%20Mary%20and%20Rolly%20Cox%20%28Ashland%29%2C%20Dewey%20and%20Karen%20Meyer%20%28Polk%29%2C%20Ann%20Davis%20%28Olivesburg%29%2C%20Dan%20and%20Terri%20Meyer%20%28Ashland%29%20and%20daughter-in-law%20Sue%20Meyer%20%28Jeromesville%29.%20He%20will%20also%20be%20deeply%20missed%20by%2017%20grandchildren%2C%2027%20great-grandchildren%20and%205%20great%20great-grandchildren.%20A%20loving%20dad%20and%20grandpa%2C%20he%20enjoyed%20keeping%20up%20with%20the%20goings-on%20of%20his%20large%20family%20and%20his%20kitchen%20table%20became%20the%20family%20meeting%20place.%0A%0AA%20Celebration%20of%20Life%20memorial%20service%20will%20be%20held%20on%20Sunday%2C%20October%2011%2C%202020%20at%201%20PM%20at%20the%20Ashland%20Dickey%20Church%20of%20the%20Brethren%20with%20Pastor%20Jeff%20Messner%20officiating.%20The%20family%20will%20greet%20guests%20at%20the%20church%20one%20hour%20prior%20to%20the%20service%20and%20again%20after%20the%20service%20at%20the%20family%20farm.%20At%20the%20church%2C%20the%20sanctuary%20will%20be%20reserved%20for%20the%20family%2C%20but%20guests%20can%20watch%20the%20service%20in%20the%20downstairs%20hall%20or%20can%20listen%20to%20the%20service%20in%20their%20vehicles%20in%20the%20church%20parking%20lot.%20Burial%20will%20immediately%20follow%20the%20service%20in%20the%20Dickey%20Church%20Cemetery%20and%20then%20all%20are%20welcome%20to%20return%20to%20the%20family%20farm%20for%20a%20meal%20and%20further%20visitation%20with%20the%20family.%20Memorial%20contributions%2C%20if%20one%20wishes%20to%20do%20so%2C%20can%20be%20made%20to%20the%20Ashland%20Dickey%20Church%20of%20the%20Brethren%201509%20Township%20Road%20655%20Ashland%2C%20OH%2044805.%0A%0AEd%20comment%3A%0A%0AWith%20the%20passing%20of%20John%20Meyer%20only%20three%20members%20of%20the%201946%20Carthage%20Cardinals%20remain%2C%20to%20my%20knowledge.%20%20They%20are%20former%20big%20league%20hurler%20Cloyd%20Victor%20Boyer%2C%20long-term%20Pennsylvania%20State%20Representative%20William%20Eckensberger%20Jr.%20and%20Thomas%20Wardner%20Crossley%20from%20Hilliards%2C%20Ohio%20who%20now%20resides%20in%20Florida.%20%20For%20those%20who%20fact%20check%20these%20reports%20be%20aware%20that%20Crossley%u2019s%20Sporting%20News%20player%20card%20had%20his%20middle%20name%20as%20Warden%2C%20as%20did%20I%2C%20until%20some%20further%20research%20was%20u %20many%20books%20all%20your%20reports%20would%20fill%u2026..%0AEd%20reply%3A%20%20%0ABooks%20are%20easy%20to%20write.%20%20Selling%20them%20is%20the%20tough%20task.%20%20With%20my%20Flash%20Repots%20they%20would%20easily%20produce%20a%20half%20dozen%20good%20size%20books%20a%20year.%20%20The%20books%20may%20be%20good%20size%20but%20they%20wouldn%u2019t%20be%20good%20sellers.%20%0AThe%20stuff%20that%20might%20sell%20are%20the%20true%20stories%20that%20I%20know%20bur%20won%u2019t%20reveal.%20%20Most%20of%20the%20old%20ball%20players%20who%20told%20them%20to%20me%20are%20now%20deceased%20but%20they%20have%20survivors%20who%20wouldn%u2019t%20benefit%20one%20iota%20from%20them%20being%20printed.%20%20%20Bruce%20Orser%20in%20New%20York%0A____________________________________________________________________________%0AThe%20Cherokee%20Kid%20%20returns%0AFor%20those%20who%20subscribed%20to%20the%20paper%20newsletter%20that%20went%20all%20over%20everywhere%20and%20back%20for%20over%20a%20decade%2C%20the%20name%20of%20Billy%20Jack%20Cornsilk%20was%20very%20much%20in%20prominence.%20%20He%20came%20into%20this%20world%20in%201933%20at%20Stilwell%2C%20Oklahoma%20and%20nineteen%20years%20later%20he%20was%20pitching%20for%20Boyd%20Bartley%u2019s%20Ponca%20City%20Dodgers.%0ACornsilk%20reunited%20with%20many%20of%20his%20former%20Ponca%20City%20teammates%20at%20the%20huge%20KOM%20league%20reunion%2C%20at%20Carthage%2C%20Mo.%20in%201998.%20That%20was%20the%20last%20time%20I%20ever%20saw%20him%20but%20he%20stayed%20in%20touch%20until%20recent%20years.%20%20For%20about%20a%20half-dozen%20years%20nothing%20was%20heard%20from%20him%20until%20the%20day%20after%20Christmas.%20%20When%20the%20telephone%20ran%20on%20that%20day%20I%20had%20a%20feeling%20a%20former%20ballplayer%20was%20calling%20even%20though%20I%20was%20addressed%20by%20a%20different%20first%20name.%20%20When%20that%20got%20sorted%20out%20Cornsilk%20said%20that%20he%20had%20recently%20moved%20to%20be%20near%20his%20son%20in%20the%20Sacramento%20area.%20%20That%20came%20about%20after%20he%20lost%20his%20wife.%0AWhen%20going%20through%20his%20%u201Cmost%20treasured%u201D%20belongings%20%28I%20kid%29%20he%20found%20a%20copy%20of%20the%20KOM%20League%20Remembered%20newsletter%20from%20a%20different%20century.%20%20He%20looked%20for%20a%20telephone%20number%20of%20the%20editor%20of%20that%20paper%20and%20fortunately%20he%20found%20that%20the%20person%20responsible%20for%20printing%20it%20hadn%u2019t%20had%20a%20change%20of%20numbers.%20%20A%20very%20nice%20conversation%20ensued%20and%20now%20Cornsilk%20is%20on%20the%20distribution%20list%20of%20these%20reports%20as%20well%20as%20all%20the%20previous%20ones%20he%20can%20handle.%20%20He%20also%20asked%20for%20an%20update%20on%20the%20status%20of%20his%20former%20teammates%20and%20that%20has%20already%20been%20shared.%20%20He%20is%20well%20down%20memory%20lane%2C%20by%20now%2C%20as%20he%20goes%20over%20the%20names%20of%20those%20who%20still%20share%20this%20planet%20with%20him%20as%20well%20as%20most%20of%20his%20former%20teammates%20who%20don%u2019t.%0AOne%20of%20the%20most%20memorable%20stories%20of%20Cornsilk%20is%20when%20the%20paper%20newsletters%20were%20sent.%20%20Somehow%2C%20Furman%20Bisher%2C%20the%20legendary%20sports%20writer%20for%20the%20Atlanta%20Constitution-Journal%2C%20used%20Cornsilk%u2019s%20name%20at%20the%20close%20of%20an%20article.%20%20That%20reference%20was%20noticed%20by%20a%20reader%20in%20the%20Atlanta%20area%20who%20was%20shocked%20to%20see%20Cornsilk%20mentioned.%20%20Immediately%2C%20he%20placed%20a%20call%20to%20Bisher%20and%20asked%20how%20he%20knew%20of%20Cornsilk.%20%20Bisher%20admitted%20he%20had%20only%20seen%20that%20name%20by%20reading%20a%20newsletter%20published%20by%20someone%20in%20Missouri.%20%20The%20caller%2C%20Ron%20Minnich%2C%20%20wanted%20to%20know%20if%20there%20was%20any%20way%20that%20person%20could%20be%20contacted%20and%20Bisher%20called%20Yours%20truly%20to%20see%20if%20it%20was%20okay%20to%20release%20the%20contact%20information.%20%20Of%20course%2C%20I%20was%20thrilled%2C%20for%20at%20that%20juncture%20the%20search%20was%20for%20former%20players%20was%20in%20high%20gear.%20%20So%2C%20Billy%20Cornsilk%20has%20been%20a%20valuable%20asset%20in%20keeping%20the%20KOM%20league%20memory%20alive%20and%20it%20is%20great%20he%20will%20be%20reading%20these%20reports%20once%20again.%0A%0AFor%20anyone%20wishing%20to%20know%20the%20stops%20on%20the%20baseball%20journey%20of%20Cornsilk%20this%20link%20provides%20it%3A%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A//digital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/44591/rec/1%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Edigital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/44591/...%3C/a%3E%0A______________________________________________________________________________%0AThis%20is%20a%20two-prong%20report%u2014this%20last%20for%202020%20and%20the%20first%20for%202021%20as%20the%20KOM%20League%20enters%20its%2075th%20year%20of%20being%20in%20the%20hearts%20a
