20the%20proportion%20is%20too%20small%20to%20be%20cognitively%20significant.%20The%20comparatively%20more%20dominant%20status%20of%20east%20and%20south%20can%20also%20be%20understood%20from%20a%20political%20and%20economic%20perspective.%20Due%20to%20its%20geographical%20features%2C%20the%20western%20parts%20of%20the%20country%20were%20mainly%20deserts%20and%20barren%20plateaus%2C%20and%20the%20north%20was%20associated%20with%20bitterly%20cold%20weather%20and%20infertile%20frozen%20lands%20while%20in%20the%20southeast%20parts%20the%20fertile%20rice%20fields%20that%20were%20the%20grain%20barn%20of%20the%20country.%20The%20north%20and%20the%20west%20were%20important%20only%20in%20terms%20of%20military%20defense.%20In%20a%20culture%20with%20a%20long%20history%20of%20agricultural%20civilization%2C%20it%20is%20understandable%20that%20the%20east%20and%20the%20south%20were%20more%20preferred%20and%20more%20important%20economically%2C%20politically%2C%20and%20culturally.%20%0ASocial%20Orders%20of%20Cardinal%20Directions%20Facing%20south%20adopts%20cultural%20and%20social%20significance%20over%20time%20in%20ancient%20China.%20The%20general%20pattern%20of%20traditional%20Chinese%20building%20complexes%20and%20room%20arrangements%20look%20like%20a%20square%2C%20with%20the%20front%20gates%20facing%20the%20south%20in%20order%20to%20be%20warmed%20and%20lighted%20by%20the%20sun.%20This%20pattern%20can%20be%20seen%20in%20residential%20houses%2C%20palaces%20and%20temples.%20The%20southern%20side%20of%20buildings%20has%20front%20gates%2C%20doors%20and%20wide%20open%20windows.%20On%20the%20north%20side%2C%20there%20are%20merely%20walls%20and%20small%20windows.%20In%20a%20building%20complex%20the%20main%20rooms%20face%20south%20with%20the%20wings%20facing%20east%20and%20west.%20There%20are%20back%20doors%20on%20the%20north%20sides%20of%20buildings%20in%20a%20complex%2C%20but%20they%20are%20for%20convenience%20of%20connection%20between%20rows%20of%20buildings.%20Some%20units%20do%20have%20doors%20facing%20north%2C%20but%20these%20are%20called%20the%20reversed%20houses%20%28daoxia%29%20%28Cao%2C%201996%2C%20pp.29-59%29%20and%20are%20considered%20atypical.%20The%20arrangement%20of%20furniture%20is%20confined%20and%20determined%20by%20this%20architectural%20pattern%20and%20so%20is%20the%20order%20of%20seating.%20In%20this%20way%20the%20practicality%20of%20facing%20south%20becomes%20symbolically%20important.%20%0AThe%20north%20seat%20that%20faces%20south%20is%20reserved%20for%20persons%20with%20the%20highest%20social%20status.%20In%20the%20imperial%20court%20the%20emperor%27s%20%26quot%3Bdragon%20chair%26quot%3B%20was%20not%20only%20significantly%20elevated%20but%20also%20invariably%20facing%20south.%20Court%20officials%20stood%20underneath%20his%20feet%20on%20the%20east%20and%20the%20west%20sides%20of%20the%20hall.%20Because%20the%20emperors%27%20thrones%20always%20faced%20south%2C%20the%20phrase%20%26quot%3Bfacing%20south%26quot%3B%20came%20to%20be%20used%20as%20a%20proper%20noun%20designating%20an%20emperor.%20%26quot%3BTo%20face%20south%26quot%3B%20means%20to%20become%20the%20emperor%20or%20the%20king.%20Accordingly%2C%20to%20face%20north%20meant%20to%20be%20a%20subject%20of%20an%20emperor%20or%20a%20king.%20Being%20bright%20was%20an%20adjective%20to%20praise%20the%20rule%20of%20a%20good%20emperor.%20As%20the%20saying%20goes%20%26quot%3Ba%20good%20emperor%20faces%20south%20to%20listen%20to%20the%20discussions%20of%20national%20affairs%20and%20rules%20brightly.%26quot%3B%20Such%20seating%20arrangements%20were%20copied%20in%20military%20and%20civil%20courts%20at%20all%20levels%2C%20in%20schools%2C%20and%20even%20in%20family%20lineages.%20The%20person%20who%20dominated%20the%20group%20took%20the%20north%20seat%20that%20was%20usually%20elevated%20but%20not%20as%20significantly%20as%20was%20the%20imperial%20throne.%20In%20military%20and%20civil%20courts%20it%20was%20for%20the%20official%20with%20the%20highest%20rank.%20In%20a%20lineage%20this%20south-facing%20seat%20was%20reserved%20for%20the%20eldest%20and%20most%20influential%20male%20or%20female%20member%20of%20the%20lineage.%20In%20schools%20the%20south-facing%20chair%20was%20for%20the%20teacher.%20The%20expression%20%26quot%3Bfacing%20north%20to%20somebody/something%26quot%3B%20was%20a%20figurative%20expression%20meaning%20to%20submit%20oneself%20as%20a%20subordinate%2C%20or%2C%20in%20the%20context%20of%20schools%2C%20to%20be%20a%20student.%20The%20phrase%20%26quot%3Bthe%20white-haired%20still%20face%20the%20north%26quot%3B%20indicates%20an%20old%20person%20who%20is%20still%20a%20student.%20The%20person%20with%20the%20second%20highest%20rank%20was%20positioned%20on%20the%20east%20side.%20The%20individual%20ranked%20third%20in%20the%20gathering%20was%20located%20on%20the%20west%20side%20facing%20the%20second%20ranking%20person.%20Then%2C%20back%20and%20forth%2C%20east%20and%20west%2C%20all%20the%20way%20down%20through%20for%20all%20present.%20In%20Chinese%2C%20the%20east%20is%20
