0Christmas%20has%20been%20renamed%20in%20various%20places%20Winterval.%20Winterval%20was%20the%20collective%20name%20for%20a%20season%20of%20public%20events%2C%20both%20religious%20and%20secular%2C%20which%20took%20place%20in%20Birmingham%20in%201997%20and%201998.%20We%20are%20happy%20to%20make%20clear%20that%20Winterval%20did%20not%20rename%20or%20replace%20Christmas.%u201D%0ANational%20Secular%20Society24%20Newsline%20%282011%20Nov%2011%29%0AThe%20true%20source%20of%20the%20story%20is%20that%20of%20one%20event%20promoter%20who%20combined%20several%20winter%20events%20%28including%20Christmas%29%20into%20one%20Winterval%20event%20in%20order%20to%20simplify%20marketing.%20From%20the%20Guardian%3A%0A%0AThe%20myth%20was%20not%20just%20repeated%2C%20either.%20It%20was%20also%20gradually%20distorted%20to%20become%20ever%20more%20removed%20from%20the%20original%20misconception.%20What%20started%20as%20a%20myth%20that%20one%20council%20had%20rebranded%20or%20renamed%20Christmas%20became%20a%20pluralised%2C%20open-ended%20narrative%20that%20%27councils%27%20and%20%27authorities%27%20were%20rebranding%20or%20renaming%20Christmas%20as%20%27Winterval%27.%0AIt%20then%20mutated%20from%20a%20simple%20rebranding%20to%20a%20calculated%20attack%20on%20Christianity%20by%20%27atheists%27%2C%20%27Muslims%27%2C%20or%20the%20%27PC%20brigade%27%20who%20feared%20offending%20%27other%20faiths%27%20or%20%27ethnic%20minorities%27.%20In%20one%20extreme%20example%2C%20the%20South%20Wales%20Echo%20claimed%20that%20Winterval%20was%20the%20result%20of%20%27virulent%20attacks%20on%20religion%20by%20atheists%27%2C%20which%20had%20led%20to%20%27new%20rules%20such%20as%20Christmas%20being%20renamed%20as%20%27Winterval%27.%20%5B...%5D%0AIn%20all%2C%20at%20least%2015%20articles%20directly%20claim%20that%20Christmas%20was%20renamed%20Winterval%20because%20of%20a%20fear%20of%20offending%20%27other%20faiths%27.%20At%20least%20a%20further%2010%20articles%20directly%20claim%20that%20Winterval%20was%20used%20to%20avoid%20offending%20%27ethnic%20minorities%27.%0ASo%20now%2C%20thanks%20to%20perhaps%20one%20repetition%20too%20far%2C%20the%20Daily%20Mail%20has%20finally%20admitted%20that%20Winterval%20is%20a%20media%20fiction.%20But%20what%20impact%20will%20those%20few%20lines%20of%20correction%20have%20compared%20with%20the%20huge%20body%20of%20journalism%20that%20has%20been%20repeating%20it%20for%20so%20long%20as%20fact%3F%20And%2C%20more%20important%2C%20will%20Melanie%20Phillips%20offer%20her%20own%20apology%20for%20repeating%20the%20myth%3F%0A%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A//www.guardian.co.uk%22%20rel%3D%22noreferrer%20nofollow%22%3Ewww.guardian.co.uk%3C/a%3E%20%282011%20Nov%2008%29%0AWhen%20I%20first%20heard%20the%20story%2C%20I%20thought%20%27ridiculous%27%20and%20didn%27t%20believe%20it%20was%20true.%20I%20spent%20a%20few%20minutes%20researching%20it%2C%20and%20found%20out%20that%20I%20was%20right%20to%20doubt.%20Therefore%2C%20my%20world-view%20was%20not%20distorted.%20Journalists%20broadcast%20their%20opinions%20to%20others%2C%20and%20it%20is%20downright%20criminal%20that%20failures%20in%20basic%20fact-checking%20can%20be%20so%20endemic%20amongst%20them.%0A%0A5.%20Conclusion%3A%20Christmas%20is%20Multicultural%0A%0A%23christianity%20%23christmas%20%23history%20%23paganism%20%23polytheism%20%23sun_worship%0A%0AChristmas%20is%20a%20multicultural%2C%20multi-religious%20festival.%20It%20combines%20sun%20worship%2C%20polytheism%2C%20pagan%20nature%20religions%20who%20have%20venerated%20the%20natural%20cycle%20for%20many%20thousands%20of%20years%2C%20Christianity%20and%20other%20myths%20and%20traditions.%20When%20Christians%20complain%20it%20is%20too%20pagan%2C%20or%20when%20lay%20folk%20complain%20it%20is%20too%20religious%2C%20or%20when%20both%20groups%20complain%20it%20is%20too%20commercial%2C%20then%20they%20are%20all%20in%20need%20of%20realizing%20that%20Christmas%20is%20a%20commercial%20fusion%20of%20diverse%20nature-based%20festivals.%20The%20date%20of%20the%2025th%20accords%20with%20Sun%20Worship%20thousands%20of%20years%20old%2C%20the%20Christmas%20tree%20and%20some%20of%20the%20decorations%20are%20pagan%2C%20even%20the%20Nativity%20stories%20are%20originally%20pagan%2C%20Mithraistic%2C%20Roman%20and%20Christian.%0A%0AThe%20main%20outstanding%20issue%20in%20the%20West%20is%20the%20Christian%20assertion%20that%20Christmas%20has%20something%20to%20do%20with%20the%20Christian%20figure%20of%20Christ%20or%20his%20birthday.%20These%20elements%20should%20be%20disclaimed.%20Firstly%2C%20the%20paganism%20inherent%20in%20Christmas%2C%20such%20as%20decorating%20trees%2C%20is%20warned%20against%20in%20the%20Bible%20%28Jeremiah%2010%3A2-4%29.%20Second%2C%20there%20are%20no%20Christian%20birthday%20celebrations%20in%20the%20Bible.%20Thirdly%2C%20early%20Christians%20celebrated%20Christ%27s%20birthday%20in%20April%20or%20May%20-%20it%20was%20only%20changed%20to%20match%20with%2025th%20of%20December%2C%20a%20major%20pagan%20holiday%2C%20by%20Emperor%20Constantin
