interested%20in%2C%20so%20we%20thought%20a%20social%20graph%20would%20be%20able%20to%20help%20with%20that.%20Friends%20tend%20to%20have%20similar%20interests%2C%20so%2C%20even%20if%20there%20is%20not%20enough%20data%20on%20an%20individual%2C%20we%20can%20still%20get%20a%20lot%20of%20data%20about%20them%20from%20their%20friends%u2019%20networks.%u201D%0A%0ANaked%20Technology%u2019s%20first%20product%20was%20an%20AI-enabled%2C%20social%20graph-based%20marketing%20engine.%20But%20the%20company%20struggled%20early%20on%20to%20commercialize%20it.%0A%0A%u201CWe%20wanted%20to%20sell%20that%20marketing%20engine%20for%20the%20social%20graph%2C%20but%20we%20didn%u2019t%20sell%20at%20all.%20The%20technology%20was%20definitely%20too%20early.%20We%20failed%20and%20struggled%20a%20lot.%u201D%0A%0ANot%20finding%20a%20product/market%20fit%20%28PMF%29%20was%20an%20issue%2C%20but%20so%20was%20a%20lack%20of%20experience.%20%u201CI%20was%20very%20shocked%20that%20we%20couldn%u2019t%20find%20a%20PMF%2C%20especially%20as%20I%20was%20still%20only%20a%20student.%20I%20didn%u2019t%20know%20how%20to%20do%20business.%20Actually%2C%20I%20didn%u2019t%20even%20think%20that%20I%20would%20start%20a%20company.%u201D%0A%0ABurning%20through%20their%20MITOU%20cash%2C%20Naked%20Technology%20abandoned%20their%20AI-based%20business%20model%20and%20pivoted%20to%20technologies%20for%20mobile%20devices.%20This%20was%20the%20zenith%20of%20the%20feature%20phone%20era.%20%u201CWe%20felt%20that%20the%20user%20interface%20was%20very%20poor.%20So%2C%20we%20created%20technology%20for%20feature%20phones%20that%20had%20a%20rich%20inter-face%20like%20on%20computers.%u201D%0A%0AHaving%20spent%20about%20three%20years%20on%20research%20and%20development%2C%20Naked%20Technology%20began%20making%20money.%0A%0AUNICORN%3F%0A%0ABut%20no%20sooner%20had%20the%20company%20hit%20its%20stride%20than%20it%20got%20tripped%20up%20by%20the%20emergence%20of%20a%20new%20era%20in%20mobile%20techno-logies%3A%20the%20smartphone.%0A%0AWith%20revenues%20dipping%2C%20Naked%20Technology%20was%20compelled%20to%20pivot%20once%20again%2C%20this%20time%20adapting%20their%20middleware%20technology%20to%20smart-phones.%20That%20move%20proved%20to%20be%20timely.%0A%0A%u201COur%20decision%20was%20validated%2C%20and%20we%20started%20to%20make%20revenue%20again.%20And%2C%20as%20Mixi%20showed%20an%20interest%20in%20the%20technology%2C%20we%20sold%20our%20company%20to%20them%20in%202011.%u201D%0A%0AAfter%20a%20year%20at%20Mixi%2C%20Hirano%20and%20Hotta%20founded%20Cinnamon%2C%20where%20Hotta%20is%20also%20the%20chief%20technology%20officer.%20In%20spring%20of%20this%20year%2C%20Cinnamon%20successfully%20managed%20almost%20%249%20million%20through%20a%20Series%20B%20fundraising%20round%20and%20debt%20finance.%0A%0AThe%20company%20has%20offices%20in%20Tokyo%2C%20as%20well%20as%20Hanoi%20and%20Ho%20Chi%20Minh%20City%2C%20Vietnam.%20New%20offices%20are%20planned%20for%20Taipei%20and%20New%20York%20City.%0A%0AINTO%20HER%20OWN%0A%0ALooking%20back%20on%20her%20entrepreneurial%20journey%2C%20Hirano%20is%20sanguine.%20%u201CI%20think%20I%20finally%20found%20out%20how%20to%20do%20business%2C%20even%20after%20having%20struggled%20for%20eight%20years%20or%20so%2C%u201D%20she%20said.%20%u201CThe%20most%20difficult%20thing%20for%20entrepreneurs%20is%20to%20find%20PMF%2C%u201D%20she%20continued.%20Even%20if%20you%20have%20a%20good%20idea%2C%20you%20cannot%20sell%20it%20if%20there%20is%20no%20need%20in%20the%20market.%u201D%0A%0AThis%20explains%20Cinnamon%u2019s%20turn%20in%202016%20from%20mobile%20back%20to%20their%20origins%20of%20AI-based%20products%20and%20services.%20The%20AI%20market%20was%20finally%20fit%20for%20prime%20time.%0A%0AThe%20company%20has%20carved%20out%20a%20global%20niche%20in%20the%20AI-powered%20optical%20character%20recognition%20%28AI-OCR%29%20industry%20and%20created%20software%20that%20can%20read%20hand-written%20messages%20as%20well%20as%20other%20kinds%20of%20text%20and%20images.%20Real-time%20voice-recognition%20software%20is%20next.%0A%0ACHAMPIONS%20OF%20GRIT%0A%0ABut%20there%20is%20more%20to%20Hirano%u2019s%20success%2C%20explained%20in%20part%20by%20an%20entre-preneurial%20zeal%20that%20was%20nurtured%20by%20her%20family.%0A%0A%u201CA%20lot%20of%20my%20friends%20went%20to%20work%20for%20large%20companies%20when%20they%20graduated.%20But%20my%20mom%20and%20grandma%20said%20they%20were%20really%20happy%20when%20I%20founded%20my%20own%20company.%u201D%0A%0AMuch%20of%20her%20success%20can%20also%20be%20explained%20by%20a%20never-say-die%20attitude.%20This%20was%20especially%20so%20during%20her%20darkest%20days%u2014when%20her%20loss-making%20company%20pivoted%20at%20the%20same%20time%20as%20she%20started%20a%20family.%20%u201CI%20had%20to%20make%20revenue%20while%20struggling%20with%20morning%20sickness.%20I%20think%20it%20was%20the%20toughest%20year%20of%20my%20life.%u201D%0A%0AHow%20did%20she%20get%20through%20it%3F%20%u201CI%20just%20gambarimashita.%20I%20worked%20hard.%20Without
